***Official Thread for 2020 BSMD applicants***

@brainbuilder02 Thank you

@OmGV2020 Thank you will try to see if I can find anything previous year. Tried but was hard to find anything for NJMS.

@ubsmd2020

There will be one interview for 45 min. The interview will be one on one with a resident or prof
 Typical medical interview questions on why medicine, med ethics, etc
 Be yourself. you will do well. you will have a tour before or after the interview.

best wishes.

Thank you @SpeedSkater. I just went back to last year and noticed one person said s/he received a Hofstra invite on 2/14 and someone else said they received it at a later date. Hopefully, it is on a rolling basis.

@SpeedSkater @orm2022

They will also keep students wait listed for interview. My D was one of them last year.

I don’t think any residency program will ask for MCAT scores. In absence of step 1 scores, they have to rely more on ECs, LORs and school reputation to do initial filtering.

Agreed that MCAT score is a non-factor. Just from sheer data points of view, BS/MD student has only P/F and that drastically alleviates significance of ECs for BS/MD than traditional as for traditional that is the case already in order to get to med school, 1st step.
Also other points to be considered for Step 1 (my phone is popping all YouTube videos for it), someone said decision is pending on number of attempts allowed for Step 1. If that goes down, people still have to grind to get that P. So we have to see how this is going to unfold in coming months.

Congratulations to all National Merit Finalists!

As per Hofstra, the traditional MD interview is MMI format. Is the BA/MD following same style?

Per some discussion on that other site, there are a very small number of IM subspecialties that do use MCAT scores when making fellowship decisions. (Yeah, surprised me too
) This is because IM residency programs are prohibited by regulations from releasing IMITE (IM In-service Training Exam) scores. Other specialties (gen surg was specifically mentioned) do release in-service scores to fellowship programs.

Actually a decision has already been made to reduce the number of allowable attempts for each Step from 6 to 4. It was part of yesterday’s announcement by USMLE/NBME.

That’s interesting to know about MCAT and IM subspecialities. my S is interested in surgical specialities. I better get back to other site soon and figure out the criteria :wink:

When is your interview?

How that works for students of BS/MD prgrams, which doesn’t require MCAT at all?

@junebug20
My S called Hofstra today and they told him that interview invitations are rolling and not done yet

Fellowships are awarded after Internal Medicine residency so there will be other information about candidates which will be used in place of MCAT score. There are IMG’s who are not required to take MCAT and apply for fellowship. If one is worried, please take MCAT ( 7+ hrs endurance needed ) even if it is not required by your BS/MD program. It will be a good practice for other tests to follow in Medical School.

For sure! I’m planning on making a FB group considering there isn’t one for PMM 2020-2021 admits currently.

I am referring in context to what @WayOutWestMom said “there are a very small number of IM subspecialties that do use MCAT scores when making fellowship decisions, (Yeah, surprised me too
)”. Those fellowship applicants have other information, just like BS/MD students have other information. Not trying to devalue BS/MD, but curious for those types of fellowship, how would it work for 2 students, 1 with MCAT (traditional or BS/MD that requires MCAT) score and another w/o MCAT (BS/MD program that doesn’t require MCAT) score.

If one has taken pre-med pre-requisites classes, one can take MCAT with minimal preparation during break between two semesters and achieve a decent score ( NU HPME, PLME, WUSTL and other BS/MD programs not requiring MCAT score ).

Yes, IMG(International Medical Graduates) are also awarded fellowships for IM sub-specialities like GI, Cardio. There are numerous desi GI and Cadio specialists who are IMGs.

Another dimension is that Students with Some ranked Medical schools that focus more on Academic EC’s which gave less time to students for Step 1 study will be at advantage with assumption :smile: that Step 1 exam structure and pass requirements remain same.
