Hey guys, I know application madness is over so the boards have died down a bit, but I thought it might be a good idea anyways to make an official thread for those of us who are doing our lower-division classes to transfer in one year. When I realized that I had enough AP credits to transfer in a year, I couldn't find any information on the internet and eventually ended up coming here! I figure we can ask/try to answer any questions, talk about unique challenges that one-year transfers face, and stay updated on each other's success stories! I'm going to type up all the info I have gathered so far, but tell me if there are any particular issues we think we should address.

Personally, I'm at SMC right now; just applied as a poli sci major (planning to pick up a second major in history once I'm at a UC) to Cal, UCLA, Davis, and SD, in that order of preference.

p.s. if you use the expression "smh" I reserve the right to mock you :)

I’m at Moorpark College. Math/Econ major. My preference: UCLA, Cal, UCSD, UCSB
This semester 22.5 units, next semester 22 units, and the rest covered by AP/ last summer session.

I like how the APs count for the IGETC. If I entered as a freshmen my APs would have been pointless, no GE credit and only some offer course equivalency.

Hey guys!
Hey CPB, hahaha its been a while!

Nice! This Thread should be helpful to all one year transfers seeking help and advice.

Anyways, keep up the work and the GPA.

And Yes, One year transfer into a good school is possible, regardless of what people say about lack of GPA on the app and stuff. I did it, I got in. I am currently on my first quarter here at UCLA majoring in Economics

If you guys have any questions or anything about anything, feel free to ask.

Hey cpbbookworm, thanks for creating this thread
I believe transfer in one year is absolutely doable…but you are a bit on your own…so Im so glad to see people who are taking the same path

I dont have AP (it got double count…:() So i take 60 units in 1 year

Summer : 7 units
Fall: 22 units
Saturday Class: 3 units
Winter Intersession: 6 units
Spring: 22 units

Exactly 60 units =]

Hope to get update from everyone from time to time…

awesome thread, i struggled so much to find others who were trying the same thing when i decided to try and transfer in one year lol

i don’t know about other colleges but a unique challenge at de anza was that they won’t allow people to go over the max unit limit for their first quarter…which excludes summer or any quarters in which you were not a full time student…and they have a petition process where you’re not allowed to state any reasons for why you think you can handle it…basically, they don’t accept any petitions unless you were a fulltime student at another college and it was your first quarter at de anza…

and wow, you guys are taking a lot of units…i only need 90 quarter units and thanks to seven ap’s and a few summer classes after junior and senior year plus a concurrent class…i have over half of them done and only need one class for igetc :]

I also applied to UCLA as an econ major! I’m going to West Valley College. I was super depressed when I ended up going to CC route, but I’ve finally realized that it actually did turn out for the best. I’m happy too that my AP scores count this way (but wouldn’t have if I went as a freshman), and if I’m admitted I’ll have saved a year. Plus, this year I’ll have spent about $2000-3000 on fees and books total, compared to the $30K times 2 years if I’d have been at UCLA right now (b!tches rescinded me over the summer).

I’m doing TAP and taking 19 units this semester, 7 over winter, & 22 next semester, and the counselors really tried to discourage me at first. But after I talked to the honors counselor and made it veryy clear that I had everything planned out to get out in a year, she was really helpful.

I was really worried while applying about my lack of ECs. I don’t have a job and haven’t volunteered since I graduated from hs, all I did was join the Honor Society. I’m hoping they’d understand, but it still worried me. And for the essay about our major, did you econ majors write about activities related to your majors?! I didn’t have any to mention. :(

I hate all this “impacted major” stuff . . . whyyyyy do I have to like poli sci and history when they’re like 18% acceptance rate??? Why can’t I be interested in classical Grecian poetry?? :(

How do you guys take so many units?? SMC only allows you to take 15 per semester, and that’s five classes! Does your college allow more, or are you going to multiple ccc’s?

^ SMC should have an office where you can fill out a unit-petition and turn it in. What happens next is that a committee will evaluate whether you can/cannot handle the course load. You come back 4 days-1 week later and get the result.

At my school, if you are approved, you then take the approval to the registration office (have to do this in-person and not online)

Also, you should first register all the classes you need, and leave the one you need the least that will bump you above the unit limit.

Hint: If you don’t have registration priority, you should petition ahead of your registration date. You don’t want to turn in the petition the week before the day you can register, and get the approval after your class is full.

I hope I don’t have any trouble at my community college because everyone is fighting tooth and nails to get in! I plan on transferring over in just 3 semester…fall…spring…and summer. I can’t use my AP scores for some reason, so it will be exactly 20-20-20. I hope I can get the classes I want…it’s basically just my IGETC wth a couple of advanced math classes…oh I want to go to Berkeley as a math major!! Apply in 2010!

hey I’m a one-year transfer as well
I’m transferring from a california community college as a sociology major.
So far I have a 4.0 and I just applied at one school, Cal. (I know very risky and I’m regretting it more and more everyday).

Hope to hear good news for everyone next may!
good luck!

Im am a senior in hs and am not hopeful I will get into a University I want to go to. So for all those transferring after one year b/c of AP credit, How many exams did you pass?
Will four be enough to transfer to a UC after a year?
