OFFICIAL Tufts University Class of 2014 RD Applicants

Does it really? To exaggerate a little: is there any ambiguity if I were to say that a majority (say, for instance, white male) applicant with a 3.0 GPA, 1900 SAT, moderate teacher recommendations and no hooks whatsoever does not deserve to get admitted to Harvard or that a 4.0, 2400 URM who’s a perennial favorite with people in his life and has broad commitments and the accolades to show for it definitely deserves to be admitted to any school of his choice? Around the borderlines (where many applicants lie), it’s arguably harder to find applicants that are this clear-cut but otherwise, there are definitely instances in which you can unequivocally say if an applicant deserves a place at a certain college.

I would use more morally neutral language, I guess. I would say your first candidate is a poor bet to be admitted to Harvard, and that the second is an excellent bet to be admitted anywhere. But “deserves” implies that the candidate has earned, and is entitled to, admission–and I just don’t think that’s a wise or reasonable way to look at it.

<<<but “deserves”=“” implies=“” that=“” the=“” candidate=“” has=“” earned,=“” and=“” is=“” entitled=“” to,=“” admission=“”>>></but>

I think that one can say that one deserves admissions (entitled is quite another matter). My daughter, as well as countless other applicants, deserved her ED spot at Tufts (or anywhere else she desired). She has very high data, has done some amazing things, with heart and sincerity, and she has integrity, in spades, and is a nice, nice kid (except for to her mother). She both earned her admissions and had some inherent qualities and gifts that enhanced her “deserving” status. So, yes, she deserves.

And deserving, in my opinion, is not just about objective data. It’s my belief that someone doesn’t deserve a spot at a college, no matter how “stellar” the applicant’s performance, if the applicants has zero earnestness about attending the school and/or is morally problematic.

Yes, I can say that my daughter, objectively, earned and deserved her spot. I am uncomfortable speaking to the idea of “entitled”–conjours up images of Marie Antoninette, somehow.

Tomorrow afternoon! Check the blog!

Best of lucky, everyone!!

except to those who don’t deserve it… ;)

I am literally crying! ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

We have no right to judge who does or does not deserve to get in. All we can see are stats. It’s completely impersonal, and even if we had essays, we are not admissions officers. We can’t say who deserves to get in.

Good luck to everyone!

Only an hour or so left probably…
