Reflection

[ul]
[]Strengths: Extracurriculares: Stellar violinist and president of MUN, huge grade upward trend, good essays
[]Weaknesses: IDK. Perhaps GPA, every semester better GPA than last except for senior year where I went down a few pegs (nothing serious), test scores? I applied for PolySci so it’s not like my math score needed to be a 36.
[]Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Big applicant pool. Admissions is a bit ridiculous these days. There were thousands of applicants just like me. Stretching myself to stand out and make my file glow is rather artificial and something I tried to do organically but perhaps failed at.
[]Where else you are applying or have already applied: Got into WashU, BU, Rochester, waited at Chicago…we’ll see
[li]General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: I showed little interest. No visit, only sent a few emails to rep.[/li][/ul]

[]Counselor Rec: Should be good, she knows me well.
[]Additional Rec: Didn’t do~
[li]Interview: Was denied an interview~[/li][/ul]

Reflection

[ul]
[]Strengths: i’m well-rounded, i guess?
[]Weaknesses: uh my profile probably. I pursued what I liked, but some of those interests seem to have coincided with racial stereotypes.
[]Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Life doesn’t work out sometimes. That’s okay.
[]Where else you are applying or have already applied: Accepted to UMass, NE, BU, Columbia, Dartmouth, and Cornell.
[li]General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: No worries, y’all. College decisions are ultimately not worth depressing over. Let’s all stay optimistic![/li][/ul]

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Nothing that really set me apart in a huge applicant pool
Where else you are applying or have already applied: Accepted by Notre Dame and safeties, waitlisted by Wash U and Carleton, rejected by Duke
General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: Disappointed because I thought I had a pretty good chance, but at top schools like Tufts you have to have extracurriculars that stand out, you can’t just get by with flashy test scores/GPA. Congrats to everyone who got in

**Decision: Accepted to College of Engineering

Objective:

[ul]
[]SAT I (breakdown): 2140 superscore - 670CR / 710M / 760W

[]Teacher Recommendations: 7/10? idk
[]Counselor Rec: 8/10
[]Additional Rec: n/a
[li]Interview: Went very well I thought, interviewer was super nice and said she would give me the highest recommendation (although she may say that to everyone). [/li][/ul]

Other

[ul]
[]State (if domestic applicant): MA
[]Country (if international applicant):
[]School Type: Private
[]Ethnicity: Asian (Indian)
[]Gender: Male
[]Income Bracket: $200,000+
[li]Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none really[/li][/ul]

Reflection
[]Strengths: Essays I guess? My gpa was pretty good for a competitive private school, got into cum laude.
[]Weaknesses: SAT scores, SAT IIs. Math was low for engineering.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
[]Rejected: Cornell (ED), Johns Hopkins, Carnegie Mellon, UC Berkeley
[]Accepted: Northeastern, RPI w/ 13k per year merit, UCLA, Rochester w/ 9k per year merit, (now Tufts)
[li]Waitlisted: Michigan CoE [/li]Waiting: USC

Honestly I wasn’t expecting to get in after being deferred EDII, but I’m happy I was. Now I have to decide between Tufts and UCLA for engineering. Idk right now but I’m leaning towards UCLA.

[]Counselor Rec: Amazing, see above.
[]Additional Rec: None.
[li]Interview: I arrived a tad late…hope he didn’t mention that! Other than that, it went beautifully. He said I had an engaging smile lol.[/li][/ul]

Reflection

[ul]
[]Strengths: Definitely Essays.
[]Weaknesses: Scores and extra curriculars
[]Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: My essays
[]Where else you are applying or have already applied: Accepted: Colgate, Tufts, Williams, Northeastern, UF, FSU, FloPoly. Rejected: Columbia, Cornell, Tulane. Waitlisted: Harvard. Waiting on: Stanford
[li]General Comments/Advice/Hindsight:
[/li]

I wanted to post to show that I don’t have perfect scores. I did not do research to cure cancer and I was not captain and leader of every club and sport. I was ME. I poured my all into my essays, and spent time forging good relationships with multiple people. I strongly feel that my recommendations, essays, interviews, and connections allowed me to get into the schools I applied to.

I am here to say this: Those of you out there who fear to dream big because of your scored- do not fear. You are more than just a number. Every single person on this site has something to offer. Show the admissions committee that you are unique and that they should want you. Most of us have been working hard our entire lives to get into a good college/ university. You are not alone, and you have so much to offer- so show it.
[/ul]

**Decision: Accepted

Objective:

[]SAT I (breakdown): N/A
[]ACT (breakdown): 33 composite
[]SAT II (place score in parentheses): Didn’t send
[]Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0):Out of 100, its a 96ish
[]Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 50/501

[]Senior Year Course Load: AP Macro, AP Micro, AP Gov Comparative, AP US Gov, AP Stat, AP Lit, AP French, Anatomy
[]Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.):Ap Scholar w/ Distinction, Scholar Athlete 4 yrs, Principal’s Honor Roll 4yrs,MVP…
[/ul]

Subjective:

[ul]
[]Extracurriculars (place leadership in parentheses):Varsity Volleyball (captain two years), Model UN (handful of awards, school’s team is top in the country), NHS, several other clubs I was in and out of…
[]Job/Work Experience: Counselor
[]Volunteer/Community Service: “Work Weekends” at underfunded summer camp, Chattahoochee River cleanups, worked at neighboring elementary school…
[]Summer Activities:CIT program
[]Essays: Presumably unique, for “Let Your Life Speak” I wrote how my dad believes he was a golden retriever in a past life and how, in his next life, he will be one again. Basically, how his personality shaped me in my otherwise rough upbringing
[]Teacher Recommendations: One from my French teacher who knows me very well and generally likes me
[]Counselor Rec: Very good-- asked for a personal statement from my dad, which explained how his absence that he had little control over and living with my destructive single-mother shaped my independence.
[]Additional Rec:Decent, from my AP Lang teacher who knew how to write a good rec but may have not liked me too much.
[li]Interview: Didn’t have one[/li][/ul]

Other

[ul]
[]State (if domestic applicant):Georgia
[]School Type: Large public school, pretty competitive depending on the class year
[]Ethnicity:White
[]Gender: Female
[]Income Bracket: $200,000+
[]Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): It may have helped that I’m from Georgia
[/ul]

Reflection

[ul]
[]Strengths: My essays and recs. My crazy upbringing probably caught the admission’s interest (Alcoholic single mom who passed away, now living with my aunt, etc.) Tests scores weren’t too bad either. Course rigor is also up there.
[]Weaknesses: My GPA and lackluster ECS
[]Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I indicated that I was interesting in my essays, showed that I was competent in my grades/scores, and I think I’m the type of student they may be looking for.
[]Where else you are applying or have already applied:
Accepted: Colorado College, Occidental, Skidmore, Reed, BU, U of Richmond
Waitlisted: William and Mary
Rejected: Middlebury, Claremont McKenna, Brown
[li]General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: I got in over many of you kids that are loads more qualified than me. College admissions is a game, and you never know what you’ll end up with. Simply put, i’m genuinely lucky and overwhelmed and excited and confused and happy. Thanks to Tufts for recognizing my potential! [/li][/ul]

Reflection

[ul]
[]Strengths:Very good academically, including high scores and grades
[]Weaknesses:Essentially everything else! Extracurriculars average/weak, no hooks
[]Why you think you received your decision: Not appealing enough subjectively I suppose
[]Where else you have applied and/or have been accepted/rejected: Accepted: Hamilton, F&M, Conn College, W&M, UR, Waitlisted: Haverford, Kenyon, Bates, Colby, Rejected: Bowdoin, Middlebury, Williams, Duke
[/ul]

General comments/advice/hindsight:
I think I placed my schools well into my reach/match/safety categories. I got in to all of my safeties, none of my reaches, and a couple of my matches. With some of my need-aware matches though I underestimated how big of a impact my financial need would have on my decision… I got accepted to my 2 matches that were need-blind and waitlisted at the 3 that were need-aware :stuck_out_tongue: pretty hard to chalk up to a coincidence. I probably would have applied to fewer reaches if I did it all over again, 6 was too many. Very happy with the choices I have now though  Hamilton is currently looking very appealing. However, I can’t really consider W&M because I am OOS and their financial aid is not very good in this area… pleased to have been accepted to such a prestigious name though at least haha. I hope everyone is happy wherever they go! In fact, I know you all will be!

Decision: Waitlisted

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): 2290 (750 CR, 770M, 770W

SAT II (place score in parentheses): 790 USH, 770 Spanish, 750 Math II

Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.69

AP (place score in parentheses): Psychology, Spanish, Stats (5); APUSH, Art History, Microecon (4)

Senior Year Course Load: AP Euro, AP Lit, APES, AP Physics B, 4 Dual Enrollment Classes

Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National Hispanic Scholar, AP Scholar with Distinction

Subjective:
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parentheses): Club Swim Team (3hrs/day), Varsity Swim Team (Co-Captain), Designed Website for an Orphanage in Colombia in which I help with fund-raising and activity coordinating, National Spanish Honor Society (Secretary)

Job/Work Experience:Two basic jobs that only require an average of an hour or two per week. Lifeguard Certified. Looking to get a job in that field

Volunteer/Community Service: Swim Meet Volunteer and the whole orphanage in Colombia thing

Summer Activities: None really

Essays: Common App - GREAT. Supplements - ehh. not too good honestly

Teacher Recommendations: Both above average to good

Counselor Rec: Generic probably

Other
State (if domestic applicant): FL

School Type: Public

Ethnicity: Hispanic

Gender: Male

Income Bracket: $80000-90000

Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM

Reflection
Strengths: Test Scores, URM, Common App Essay, Varsity Sports Captain, work with orphanage
Weaknesses: GPA, no research or incredible ECs.

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I think I was a solid applicant. Good test scores, good EC’s. Great essay. Good recs. Just a low GPA. Far too many B’s. I got in because I had a good application and a URM.

Where else you are applying or have already applied: Accepted: Rice, Northwestern, Cornell, WUSTL, Emory. Rejected Yale, Brown. Waitlisted: Duke, Tufts. Waiting on Georgetown.

General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: I thought I was dead because of my 3.69 GPA but its not impossible. I’ve gotten accepted to a whole bunch of good colleges with it (granted, I am a URM). Still, a low GPA isnt the end of the fight if you have everything else going for you. I don’t think I’m gonna take a spot on the Waitlist. I’m honestly surprised I got waitlisted. Once I started getting into Rice and Northwestern and Cornell, I thought I would get into Tufts for sure. Guess I was wrong. Its all for the best though. That way I’m not taking a spot from anyone. Congrats to all that were accepted. You truly deserved it. For now, RICE CLASS OF 2018.

[]Extracurriculars (place leadership in parentheses): Literary magazine (Editor-in-Chief); music (singing and self-taught at piano and guitar, have performed in various school events since I was 13, used to play in the subway, recorded a professional CD with my band in 2011); art (also a long-term activity for which I have won two Honorable Mentions in the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards); independent writing of poems, stories, memoirs, etc.; Model United Nations (Moderator)
[]Job/Work Experience: None
[]Volunteer/Community Service: “Signs”, or a community service club for deaf and blind children in Mexico (Officer); Gamma Club Teacher, which is a club dedicated to teaching underprivileged children in Mexico for free; Habitat for Humanity; opportunity volunteering with the elderly and Red Cross; packing for food drives at school; etc.
[]Summer Activities: Traveling with my family, journalism camp at Boston University (although this has no effect on my decision, since I didn’t put this anywhere in my application)
[]Essays: I wrote the Common App one about being in the car during long rides that I have with my family during family trips. The why Tufts was nothing super special, but it was well-writen and I conveyed my excitement about Tufts in it. The next one was an unconventional “poem-like” essay, in which I wrote concrete statements about my life and what matters to me in order to answer the prompt. The last essay was the “What makes you happy?”, and I wrote about how small things in my life make me happy and how I appreciate them and that’s my idea of happiness- not an eternal state of bliss, but a collection of happy small moments.
[]Teacher Recommendations: I only saw one of them (the one that I wrote about in the Additional Rec section), and the other one I didn’t see but I know it was stellar, since I had been my English teacher’s best student for two years in AP English classes.
[]Counselor Rec: No idea. She doesn’t know me too well, to be honest. I hope she didn’t think I was a mediocre student.
[]Additional Rec: US History teacher, whom I have had a close relationship with since 11th grade. I was able to see it and it was wonderful, talked about how there are “very few students” like me in both academic and personal qualities.

Reflection

[ul]
[]Strengths: URM, lots of community service, multiple awards, some leadership, my essays were pretty honest and well-written
[]Weaknesses: test scores, GPA, midyear report had one seventy-something in AP Calc
[]Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I’ve worked pretty hard all high-school. I showed a lot of interest in the school and visited the campus on my own. I also am pretty well-rounded, have music and art and writing, lots of community service, and I think I was able to develop a voice through my application and essays (this is VERY important for Tufts- they care a lot about PERSONAL QUALITIES). I also think the legacy made the admission officers to take another look at my application/distinguish me from similar applicants who perhaps did not have a legacy.

[]General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: SO HAPPY to be accepted!! Tufts was one of my first choices so I’m extremely happy. It’s also in Boston, which makes it perfect! Counselor Rec: Very good/we got along great

Other
• State (if domestic applicant): Northwest
• School Type: Public

• Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None
Reflection
• Strengths: Strong humanities for CS major.
• Weaknesses: Class Rank, UW GPA
• Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think they blew this one, but maybe my letters of rec weren’t as good as I thought – also, they only had room for two of them, and I left out the one I used on all my acceptances.
• Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted RPI, Rochester, Northwestern.
Rejected: Cornell, Penn, Rice, Vandy, Tufts.

General Comments: I really don’t get what they were looking for. I probably could have run track for them, but didn’t play that angle and maybe I should have. ECs were pretty strong and varied. If their aid had been good enough, I may have gone there, but honestly Northwestern will be just fine. Go Wildcats!!!

Reflection

[]Strengths: Definitely my essays. My application was probably weaker compared to some other people, but my essays really made my personality shine through (Thanks for the creative essay topics Tufts!)
[]Weaknesses: Extracurriculars. Definitely could have done more “leadership” positions and focused on one passion.
[]Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Honestly, I have no idea. Some of the people who were already rejected on here had much stronger applications than I did, and were rejected. Plus, I’m Asian, which generally puts me on a stricter scale already (in terms of academics). I think I had a strong application from my area/school, which is what pushed me through admissions. Still can’t believe I was accepted.
[]Where else you are applying or have already applied:
