**Official Tulane Class of 2015 Decisions Thread**

Los Angeles. I’ve visited usd, loved it, I think I would rather go there than Tulane, it has a great undergrad business program

I found out on Gibson. I had no email, so I opened it in the middle of class lol thanks Tulane…

If your daughter showed lots Of interest I’m sure shell get in I didn’t do the extra essay or showed any interest to the school so that’s most likely why I didn’t get in

Tulane rejected me! :frowning: ughhhhhhh. Shouldve known.

The Committee on Admission has completed review of your application for admission to Tulane University.
Regretfully, you were not among those students selected for admission to the university. A letter with further information will be mailed to your home.

:(

ukfcra, your right. It was a bad joke. I was going to let this alone but feel that I cant. I have the Reform Judiaism magazine in front of me. It is distributed to all households in this country that are affiliated with a Reform synagogue. Its dated fall 2010. It lists the top 60 schools Jews choose and the top 20% by percentage of Jews. Needless to say, Tulane is one of the schools on the top of the list. When you make a comment insinuating that you were not accepted because you werent Jewish, you are overlooking the fact that tons and tons of Jewish students APPLY to Tulane. Way more that of other schools. Jewish students, just like any other population, want to feel comfortable and not isolated. They will choose a school like Tulane over many others simply for that reason. I will go further and say that Tulane not only makes them comfortable but also respects their religion. As far as I know, Tulane is one of the only schools that has no classes on Yom Kippor. It is considered the holiest day of the Jewish year and even the most secular Jew will observe the holiday. Many students have had to twist themselves in knots, trying to observe and also meet their school work requirements. It makes Jewish students comfortable to know that their needs are taken into consideration. Most Christians take it for granted that they will be off from work or school on their religious holidays. Most cant imagine it. My point is simple. There is a high proportion of Jews at Tulane because there is a high proportion of Jews applying.

There is, obviously, a higher proportion of Jewish students at Tulane than in the general population. This is true at many of the higher tier private schools, especially. And while I certainly take ukfcra’s word that it was just a weak joke, I would still point out that if Tulane is about 30% Jewish (no sure what the “exact” number is, if one can even get an exact number), that means it is 70% not Jewish. I didn’t need to be a math major for that one! So clearly, even if there was some subconscious hostility or resentment in the comment (and I have no idea if there was or not), it would be hard to support given the facts on the ground.

As has been said here before, Tulane and New Orleans has always been a more welcoming place for Jewish people than one might expect given the history and reputation of the South in general. Now that we have that established, let’s keep this thread focused on what it was intended to be. If someone wants to start a discussion on Jews, Jewishness and Tulane, please start a new thread. I am all for (civil!) free speech, but in a forum like this let’s try and compartmentalize.

Ukfcra, I found your “bad joke” very offensive and I do not see the humor in the “joke” My D (who is Jewish, but does not have a “Jewish last name”) was accepted EA to Tulane with a huge merit scholarship. Why was she accepted even though her last name didn’t indicate that she was the “right religion”? Maybe it had to do with her SAT scores and GPA which were much higher than yours? Maybe it had to do with the fact that she took the time to answer the optional essay. Maybe it had to due with the fact that she did show interest by meeting with the counselor when she visited our high school and by going to visit the campus.

Or maybe it has to due with the fact that she is far too intelligent to ever post an offensive “bad joke” on a public message board.

I agree with mumof2. The “bad joke” was really no joke. In his? comment there was a world of meaning. “And thats only the ones who say they are”, and "are Jewish or from Jewish families. The first is the conspiracy of the Jews routine and the second is the implication that blood lines, regardless of religion, makes you Jewish. I dont think the benefit of the doubt is acceptable here and posting a comment like that on a public forum is just an indication of why Jewish students look for a school like Tulane.

This is probably not the thread for this kind of discussion so we should get back to “regular programing” as YOU KNOW WHO calls it. ( didnt want to mention his name, afraid he be able to see it and come back :))

LOL malaml, I was the one that called it regular programming, and He Who Must Not Be Named kept jumping on me for saying that. And the moderators kept deleting his comments, which they should. But I know what you meant.

While it is a (probably) inevitable evil that will never go away, it is a shame that the anonymity of the internet allows people to say and do some things they would never do in person. Obviously that can be a good thing in certain cases, like for people that are too shy to put forth something good if not for the anonymity. It is just too bad that only constitutes like 5% of the effect of anonymity, and the jerky side (or worse) is the 95%.

Oh well, back to regular programming. LOL.

…not quite yet. I must say that I am also offended and, I’m not Jewish. Amazingly, I was somehow accepted and offered the DHS, even though I’m Catholic. Maybe, just maybe, it had something to do with my stats…

What truly perplexes me is the fact that he seems to have an issue with the Jewish population at Tulane, but yet he chose to apply. I guess it’s easier on his ego to blame his religion rather than his qualifications. I think Tulane made a wise choice…

Now back to regular programming. :)

hey ukfcra,

I accept your apology. I’m a Jewish parent of a student who recently graduated from Tulane. You are only about 17-18 years old right? …made a silly comment…and then you “manned up” about it and apologized. It’s a good “lessons learned”. Best of luck to you wherever you go.

wow guys seriously. firstly it has nothing to do with my ego, if you read carefully i blamed myself for not doing enough for tulane and i put an “lol” at the end of my rude comment about religion making it seem like it has nothing to do with that. Who do you think you are throwing out that i said it as some sort of ego boost, like seriously are you that stupid to not realize i said it was purely my fault for not writing the optional essay. And i also dont see how it is “offensive” its not like its offensive that a catholic school wont accept a jewish student. Why are people upset over what i said, it wasnt and shouldnt have been taken seriously and im sure if i said "oh i wasnt accepted because 60% is christian i wouldnt be getting all this s**t. I said im sorry now truly guys just get over it.

Peace, Im out. Got accepted to NYU today

whs2012 - Would you mind posting your stats? My D is still waiting and I am wondering where she stacks up. She is obviously not top stats since we have not heard. She was denied at UT Austin but got into Colorado Boulder. Right now it looks like she’ll be a “Buf”, but we visited NO last summer and she really liked the city, so she applied to Tulane.

@ukfra
First: The most predominant Catholic University that comes to my mind is the University of Notre Dame and I can assure you that they do not exclude Jews from Notre Dame.

Secondly, your comment most certainly was intended as a put-down to both Tulane and the Jewish population. That people should be offended should come as no surprise to you. It was obviously intended to offend. Clearly, this was a knee jerk reaction to your rejection that just shows your immaturity or lack of class - I am not sure which. You will be in the company of plenty of Jews at NYU, so for your sake, I hope you lose the attitude. I don’t think they will be missing you at Tulane in the fall. Good luck at NYU.

OK, I was trying to be strong but…according to my handy dandy Reform Judaism magazine NYU is 28 percent Jewish. That, and with the generally large Jewish population in the area, should have ukfra feeling right at home!:)

i’m sorry you are all so offended by this harmless comment i made, but where does it say that i have anything against jews??? Like what are your guys’s problem there is literally no where, where i say anything against being jewish or going to a jewish school. And i made a joke about Tulane not accepting me for that reason, im not actually saying tulane would do that, jeez. Why are you all getting upset at me about this? I’m so over this, you guys clearly have no lives so you just start *****ing to people on here. I will have fun at NYU and most of my friends are jewish anyway since i’m from Los Angeles…they wouldnt take what i said in offense, its obviously a joke.

I really honestly dont see why this is worth so much time. I do think the comment was rude, but ukfcra did not seem to mean it and did apologize. As for all the others especially the parents; I’d think you would have better things to do than to sit on a blog and criticize a girl 30 years younger than you. If you want to criticize ukfcra make a thread to do so, but i believe this thread is designated to the Tulane class of 2015 decisions.

ukfcra, ok. Im going to go along with the fact that you truly didnt mean to offend but as you can see, you did offend. Its one thing to joke around with your friends about things like that but another to post it on a public forum. There is a certain level (high!) of sensitivity on the topic and in future you should probably be careful with those kinds of comments. I am also going to say in your defence that your generation tends to be less concerned in general about political correctness mainly because they think most of the issues that sparked that trend(political correctness) have been solved. I remember my daughter referring to the front seat of the car as the “Rosa Parks” seat. I was kind of horrified. She rolled her eyes and said thats what everyone calls it including her black friends. I doubt that the older generation of African Americans would be happy hearing a young white girl refer to it like that. It seems flippant and insensitive even though it wasnt meant to be that way. To young people the civil rights movement is ancient history. Over and done with. Anyway… I like “shotgun”. Just saying.

Yes. I agree about this not being the forum. Now, back to our show.

Hey guys,
I’m totally new to this whole college confidential thing and it seems pretty interesting so far =). I’ve been accepted at Tulane and received a merit scholarship. I was wondering what % of accepted students receive any sort of merit scholarship. This could have already been answered but I didn’t really feel like reading every last post lol. Also, does this put me in good standing to receive a better need based package? I applied for that also. Thanks!
