Mobe1101, thanks for getting us back on topic. I dont think there are any stats in terms of how many get merit scholarships. Fallenchemist will have to chime in on that. As far as getting a better package because of your stats, thats also information that seems unavailable. I have the general idea that some schools will offer better qualified students better packages but nothing specific on Tulane. Sorry. Maybe someone else can help.

Hi mobe. Congrats on your acceptance and merit award. Tulane has two different categories of merit awards. There are the kind that anyone that is accepted is automatically considered for (like you got) and these range from $7,500 to $25,000 annually. Then there are the two that you can apply for, the DHS and the Community Service Scholarship. The DHS (75 awards) is full tuition, and for the first time this year they awarded some honorable mention DHS at $28,000. There are about 30 CSS I think, and they range from $5,000 to $15,000 and can be added to the automatic consideration awards up to the amount of tuition. So in total I imagine 20-25% of the incoming students get some kind of merit award, but that is just an educated guess on my part. It could be a bit higher, I wouldn’t think it was lower.

It shouldn’t significantly affect your need based package, except that you now have less need. Be aware that your merit scholarship is an asset that Tulane counts when calculating your need based FA package. A quick example: Tulane’s Cost of Attendance (COA) is $54,000 and let’s say you got a $20,000 merit award. Now let’s say your Expected Family Contribution (EFC) is $8,000. That means Tulane figures you have $28,000 covered, leaving $26,000 that needs to be financed. Tulane does not guarantee to meet 100% of need, but you will probably see something very close to it. The better student you are the closer to 100% it will be, I would think. The package you see will most likely be some combination of grants (no repayment required), loans, and possibly work-study. So in answer to does the merit award mean a better need based package, essentially the answer is no, not directly, but my understanding is that better students get more grants in their package. I would like to know myself for sure if that is right, I have never been 100% sure about that last part.

Thanks malaml! Haha the only reason I ask is because, over the past little while, I have been looking at the comments everyone has been posting. It seems that, compared to everyone else here, my scholarship was some sort of a mistake! lol. i’m just kidding, but I only got a 28 on my ACT. However, my grades were very solid (i’m in the top 10% of my class). But everyone that seems to have gotten in offers an amazing academic resume! It is so awesome to see! But at the same time quite intimidating…I was really taken aback when I got in. I was even more when I got a scholarship. I’m guessing that what got me in was the fact that I had pretty solid extracurricular activities. Now, I want more than anything to go because this school was for sure a reach. haha congrats to everyone…I hope to see you all in August!

*thanks to fallenchemist too!

I think this answers the question. It looks like its a few years old though.[Tulane Need-Based Scholarship - Tulane University of Louisiana Scholarships](<a href=“Find Scholarships for College Students: Scholarship Database | Cappex”>Find Scholarships for College Students: Scholarship Database | Cappex)

Guys, stop arguing. -.-

And yes sure.

GPA: idk anymore, I’m graduating cum laude? I think I have like a 4.6?
ACT: 26…very very bad, I know.
SAT Bio: 670…mehh wanted an 800 but I was hospitalized the entire week prior
EC’s: very strong. The only thing that made me stand out. I also go to a career technical school with a 33% acceptance rate (which is why I don’t think my rank is that bad!!!) and I’m in the premed/emergency medicine program. I’m also the team leader of my schools community emergency response team. Ummm…I’m black, graduating a year early, my essay was pretty darn good, and that’s it besides my clubs (way too many to type from my phone)…

this whole argument is ridiculous. I’m jewish and I didn’t even feel slightly offended by ukfcra’s comment. teenagers say dumb things, especially on internet forums. get over it, sensitive parents who have nothing better to do. sheesh.

anyway, i’m starting to get really nervous. my decision is still “pending review”, and it’s driving me insane! JUST GIVE IT TO ME STRAIGHT, TULANE!

i didnt get in. I was surprised at first b/c I go to a very good hs and almost everyone here gets in (on naviance, my circle is right there in all the acceptances!) so I thought I’d for sure get in. but I didn’t send teacher recs, didn’t show any interest in the school, barely answered the ‘why tulane’ question, etc. I hate being rejected (who doesn’t?) but I don’t think I would’ve gone there anyway and if they were trying to keep their acceptance rate lower, I guess they wouldn’t accept people like me who don’t show that much interest anyway… :/

here’s my stats:
gpa 3.8 (i think that’s weighted)
SAT: 2050
ec: good with a couple leadership positions
courseload: heavy but I did make a couple C’s here and there
teacher recs: didn’t send any. big mistake I guess but oh well I didn’t want to go there that bad

so whatever, it’s not fun not to get in somewhere, but I’m okay with it. I think since they’re accepting less people this year, they’re really making sure they have an interest in Tulane and obviously I didn’t show enough interest. (I remember sending all the other teacher recs and since you couldn’t attach them on the commonapp I didn’t bother…I didn’t want my teachers to have to mail it and everything…) and I’m not saying that’s the only reason, it could be my grades too! but I bet that’s the main reason. oh well!

I don’t think it was a good fit for me, so I think it’s best that I didn’t take up a spot for someone who really wants to go there. good luck to everyone else and congratulations to everyone who got in! Tulane is a great school and I think it’s even referred to as the ‘ivy of the south’ so getting in there is a big deal! :)

Lorrainadeles,
I think I’ll be in the same boat. Good grades (3.9 UW/ 29 ACT), all IB courses, good extracurriculars but didnt answer why Tulane question, nor send in teacher recommendation.
It would suck to get rejected, even though I wouldn’t have end up going there since I got accepted to U of M.

haha and before I leave this thread, I want to give my two cents on this jewish thing.

I think ukfrca’s comment was silly and potentially offensive, but I also think most of you overreacted. If you think it was stupid too, just ignore it and move on. you can tell by what she said that her comment is more ignorant (I wish there was a nicer word…) than deliberately offensive.

There isn’t much you can say regarding religion, race, etc without offending someone, so ukfrca, I’d be much more aware of this in the future. I get very annoyed when people overreact because sometimes people take everything WAY too seriously and it’s like they try to take offense to things. But at the same time, your comment wasn’t respectful and it isn’t surprising that people were offended. It was obviously a defense mechanism since you didn’t get in (I’m right there with you!) but next time, when you get rejected for any reason, don’t insult others (even subtly) because it doesn’t make you seem like a mature person.

I’m applying to NYU too! (though since it’s my 1st choice, I really took time on that app!) congrats on getting in!! I’m SO nervous!!

~

ah I bet you’ll do fine Samaritan. Congrats on U of M! That’s a great school and since you’ve already chosen, it doesn’t matter anyway! :)

So if I haven’t found out by now does this mean I didn’t get in? Mine has been in the “pending review” stage for several weeks now…

palindromist, they may really be reviewing yours still, but mine was like that for a few weeks and then I got the ‘regretfully…’ message when I logged in the other day. I think it could go either way. Good luck!

Thanks! Good luck to you too.

Why can’t colleges just accept everyone? (I know the answer, but I just wanted to say it)

That’s absurd. Your stats blow mine out of the water… jeez.

I agree, that’s absurd @luckiecharmz. Perhaps because you applied RD, it seemed like you didn’t show much interest in the school and Tulane had a bit of “Tuft’s Syndrome”?

I also know my friend who got accepted into an Ivy League ED applied to Tulane EA and got deferred originally but he called and asked why and they accepted him (not that it mattered since 2 weeks later he got into an Ivy League :P).

I would call and ask about it. It makes you definitely seem more interested.
