[/ul]Reflection[list]
[] Strengths: ECs, test scores?
[] What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: In the application I filled out, there wasn’t much room for making it unique, so yeah…
[] Weaknesses: Personal app had no personality. Applied for fin aid
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Don’t really know I thought I would get in, but I guess not…
[li] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted: Ole miss (honors), Southern Miss (honors) - both full rides with merit scholarships[/li]Waitlisted - Tulane, WashU
Rejected: Vanderbilt (ED)

Also waitlisted.

Waitlisted

2270 sat, 4.0 Unweighted gpa, ranked #2/435 national merit finalist, captain of tennis team, won tennis ditricts last year, vp of spanish national honor society, vp of environmental club, captain of academic games, hundreds of hours of community service…

I applied using the personal application so as far as I recall I didn’t write an essay or put much effort into the application.

Not to be arrogant but I’m a little confused as to why I didn’t get in. I feel like I was pretty qualified all around and my academic stats are above tulanes average. I guess I didn’t show a whole lot of interest, so maybe that’s why?

I had an SAT score of 2020 and I had high Ap test scores as well as a bunch of good ECs. I filled out the priority application because my Guidance counselor recommended it and with my GPA of 3.89 combined with my test scores I thought I had a decent shot of getting in. I did fill out the Why Tulane? Section though I can’t remember what I put for my other personal statement. Does anyone know whether or not I have a shot at being accepted off the waiting list? How big is the waiting list this year?

spinzthatwinz - You are probably right that if you didn’t show interest that is likely the reason, but I think it is becoming clear that Tulane is just about full and now is in the position of having to wait and see what happens in April. You have an AMAZING record and so will obviously get into some really great schools. History shows that more likely than not, based on your record and the fact that you didn’t show much interest, you will go somewhere else. But, if Tulane took every student like you this year (as they did last year and wound up with about 180 students over target, which diminished to about 130 by move in time) and got too many actually enrolling again, it would be bad. As was talked about before, Tulane is actually trying to keep this class at about 150-175 less than last year’s. Put that all together, and you get a highly qualified student such as yourself waitlisted. You certainly should not take it as anything more than that.

Best of luck wherever you end up! I am sure it will be somewhere equally wonderful.

mmockingbird - no idea how big the waitlist is, but if Tulane is your top choice, you must let your counselor know this. If you already said that in your app, reaffirm it with them. It will be a tough year to get in from the wait list, IMO.

waitlisted: not totally surprised
1870 sat
3.9 W

@spinzthatwinz I think I had the same problem. I’m not as qualified as you are, but I fit well into the middle 50% for sure, and I thought I would get in. I guess this personal application business was a bad idea. So far I’ve been rejected or waitlisted at all of my top choices :/

Waitlisted at Tulane, a little sad considering my #2 choice.

Stats:
1980
GPA: 3.8 W
attended a nationally ranked top 25 HS in WA
LOTS extracurriculars

SAT: 1850
ACT: 30
Unweighted GPA: 3.8
Weighted GPA: 4.02
4 APs
Major Extracurriculars
Many service and sports awards
Several teacher and personal recs
Personal application

Awarded $15,000/year academic scholarship

Accepted with scholarships to all of my 6 safety schools. This is my first target acceptance. No rejections yet (I know they are coming).

I’m really surprised I got in and got money after seeing all the people waitlisted here.

[] Additional Rec: NA

[] Applied for Financial Aid?: no

[] State (if domestic applicant): NJ
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: public
[] Ethnicity: Asian
[] Gender: female
[] Income Bracket: upper middle class
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): anti-hook - being Asian
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: ?
[] What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: To be honest I can’t remember.
[] Weaknesses: That I was bland enough that I don’t even remember what I wrote.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I showed no real interest in the school. I’m actually quite happy that I wasn’t accepted because it shows that Tulane was paying enough attention to realize that I had never visited, asked for information, or anything at all really. Also, quite a few people from my school were already accepted EA.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted to UMich, Georgia Tech, Case Western (most likely attending), Stevens Institute of Tech, and UChicago. Waiting for Cornell, Carnegie Mellon, and Johns Hopkins still.
[/ul]

It’s also kinda weird but I did apply EA, but something glitched and I was switched to RD. I contacted the office to be moved back to EA, which never happened, and by that point I realized I only really applied because Tulane has EA. I figured it was fate and gave up on it.

imeaniguess: It does sound like fate, lol. In any case, you are in some really fine engineering schools, so very best of luck. What great choices to have already, and I bet you get into 2 out of 3 of the remaining ones.

BTW, at Tulane being Asian is not an anti-hook, because Tulane does not have nearly as high an Asian percentage as most of the schools you mention. I think you had it right, you just didn’t show any interest so they waitlisted you.

fallenchemist: Haha, thanks for letting me know about the Asian anti-hook business. It really goes to show how rash I was in applying…

If it matters to anyone, I took myself off the waitlist. Good luck to everyone :]

My D applied with the free application (which was the only reason she applied). We felt that she had nothing to lose and we know that Tulane is a good school albeit far from where we live in New England. She was rejected and then later received an email advising that she was on the waiting list.
