I am guessing that since we are down to the last three days, that my daughter is either borderline, or deferred. She had her application in by the 9th of October, and still hasn’t heard anything. Her stats were what we thought pretty good…but still no reply
SAT 2190
GPA 4.59
class ranking #2
lots of EC, including sports, volunteer, tutoring, part time job, club membership and club officer position, retreat team, honor code council member, etc.
Her high school is a small private college prep, very strenuous, but unfortunately because of its size does not have a large amount of AP classes. All but her religion class each year is honors and she has taken as many advanced (DE) and AP classes that will fit into her schedule.

seniormom - Unless there is something we are missing, that record is not borderline and she shouldn’t be a rejected/deferred applicant. I am assuming two things you don’t specifically address; that her Gibson account shows her app as complete (you say she applied by the 9th but are you sure her school sent everything?) and that she applied (or meant to apply) EA.

I would strongly urge her to contact admissions and make sure there is not some kind of mix-up. The most common things that would cause her to have not heard yet (if her all her materials really were received by Tulane) are 1) Her file is accidentally split in 2 and so admissions doesn’t have it tagged for review yet; and/or 2) Her application was accidentally marked RD instead of EA.

The only other thing would be if somehow Tulane thought, based on something in her application, that she really wasn’t that interested in Tulane and was using it as a safety. Not sure how they would know that unless she said so, but anyway that is just speculation to the extreme. The above possibilities are more likely.

Fallenchemist,
Thank you for the reply. Yes, under Gibson it has been marked complete since the middle of October. I just double checked our copy of her application and she chose early action. In her statement about attending Tulane she sounds very excited about the opportunity and speaks of how highly regarded Tulane is, and how the culture and strength of the city appeals to her as well. She sounds very positive and upbeat, not like it is a safety at all.

I did make a mistake on her stats that I put down, which could be the difference. I didn’t realize that I put 2190, when she actually had a 2090. I need to go edit that and correct.

I will tell her to call admissions this afternoon to make sure that everything is complete and okay with her file.

Do you think the 2090 SAT is what is holding her back?

seniormom- I’ve been acceted, and I have a 2090 on the SAT and a 31 on the ACT. It’s not a bad score at all! I don’t think that could be holding her back.

I agree, 2090 is an excellent score, well above Tulane’s average of about 2000. I think her file fell behind the copier! OK, kidding, but something probably happened. I also agree you should let her call. There is nothing inherently wrong with a parent calling about this, but it will let her know that she can approach the administration herself. A good habit to get into, because while Tulane is as good as most schools in helping students, better than many and maybe a little short compared to a few, it is still a bureaucracy. Might as well start learning to navigate them now!

What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: Study abroad
Weaknesses: Not doing the ‘why Tulane’ essay - I submitted my application ASAP since I was traveling abroad, and really started researching Tulane afterwards.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Perceived lack of interest because I had to submit my application so early. Well - that’s life; I didn’t know what kind of internet I would have in Ghana.

Ugg - Tulane would’ve actually been my #1 had I been accepted with a decent scholarship. I still plan on mailing my DHS application on Wednesday - I can dream, right?

Avery148 and seniormom - I know this happened last year as well, wherein a number of top academic students that didn’t give Tulane any indication it was more than a backup choice were deferred. If Tulane really is a #1 choice and there were extenuating circumstances as to why you couldn’t attend local functions or otherwise indicate it was a serious contender (and being in Ghana seems like a decent reason to me), then you should schedule a phone meeting with your counselor and let them know what your thoughts really are.

Avery - I would definitely do the DHS. It certainly shows you are serious about Tulane. I would still couple that with a phone meeting with your counselor though.
