***Official Tulane Class of 2016 Decisions***

Wow my first rejection! After being admitted to Northwestern, Vanderbilt, Boston College, UVA (Out of State) and the University of Rochester. Bruised ego a bit, but I really didn’t show any interest… Ah well! To Ivy day!

I must be missing something here. Cristena- are you instate or OOS? If you were deferred EA and you are instate and meet the instate requirements for automatic admission, then I agree, someone should have picked up the phone and checked on this. My son (OOS) was one of those for whom the school accidentally had two files set up, and when they finally put the two together (my s checked on this several times before they finally discovered their file duplication) his application was processed quickly. But it had never shown as complete until that time, which was a flag. If your application was complete and the initial decision was deferral, what was “missing”?

I think its wonderful that Tulane offers special opportunities for instate students, especially since, unlike UV or UNC, it is a private school.

For those of you who have been deferred or declined, sorry to hear that. It is seeing to be harder to be admitted as the number of admission offers go out, so the RD applicants do seem to have a tough time, which is difficult for students with strong applications. But if you truly want to attend Tulane, call the admissions office. If it was a safety or you are, for lack of a better term, trophy hunting and wanting to have lots of admissions when in reality you aren’t planning to attend, then I agree with others here. The school made the appropriate admissions decision. It is not a reflection on your abilities. But understand, being told no doesn’t feel good.

Good luck where you land.

Decision: Waitlisted

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 1910 (680 CR, 590 M, 640 W)
[] ACT: 30

[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 6/95
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): AP US History (5), AP World History (3), AP European History (5), AP Language & Composition
[] Senior Year Course Load: 3 APS/ 8 Honors Classes

[/ul]Subjective:[ list]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):Student Council, Student Ambassadors
[] Job/Work Experience: Office Assistant/Intern at a law firm
[] Volunteer/Community service: LOTS
[] Essays: Used my CommonApp essay as a personal statement. Didn’t write a Why Tulane essay
[] Teacher Recommendation: I’m not even sure. I thought asking a teacher who had grown up in New Orleans would help but maybe not hahaha.
[] Counselor Rec: Had to be sent three times because Tulane “hadn’t received it.” She probably got tired of writing it over and over again.
Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: yep
[] Intended Major: Not sure
[] State (if domestic applicant): SC
[] School Type: Public residential high school
[] Ethnicity: Black/African-American
[] Gender: F
[] Income Bracket: Below $10,000 in my mom’s household
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM

[/ul]Reflection
[] Strengths: Community service, job, course rigor (for what my school offers), GPA, and class rank
[] What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: My commonapp essay talked about an offensive name I was called and how it should be a call for diversity not only on college campuses but in ethnic neighborhoods.
[] Weaknesses: No Why Tulane essay, SAT scores
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Not enough interest in Tulane to warrant a full out acceptance. But that’s okay. I got accepted to Loyola University New Orleans so I might be right across the street!

Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted- Duke, Northwestern, Williams, Pitt, Loyola University New Orleans, Rejected- None (yet), Waiting- Brown University

As a follow up on all the comments:

I am an out of state student. And I will admit, this does bruise my ego, but I am waiting to hear from Emory University (my 1st choice) tonight. I did kind of consider Tulane as a safety. Seeing as they defered me in EA, I sort of marked them off the list a few weeks ago. I will not be pursuing Tulane for a further explanationas to why I was deferred because I do not think this is necessary or worthwhile.

Thank You for the comments saying I was capable of admittance! This helps the rejection a little haha

Best of Luck to everyone in their college decision making!!!

I guess the lesson learned (for my younger kids who may apply someday) is: apply as early as possible and concentrate very hard on letting it scream out throughout the application how much the student wants to go to tulane as their first choice (even if it isn’t, LOL) ?! …

mamasayso-
Curious- How do you have acces to these students tanscripts? Who figured out that the HS guidance counselor sent the wrong grades? That seems like a colossal screw up on the part of the HS guidance counselor, not Tulane. Were the students applications reconsidered when the error was corrected?

If a student is deferred (for whatever reason) and they are very interested in the school, they should send additional information to support/bolster their application. It sounds like Christena “marked it off her list” after the deferral, so may not have shown the additional interest by sending additonal information. As for the HS sending the wrong transcripts, thats just awful, but how would someone have any whay of knowing that? And why blame Tulane, mrpapageorgio? e don’t know if the correct or incorrect nqme was ont he transcrript or if the wrong stranscript was enclosed with the right LOR’s etc, and the name onthe transcript was overlooked by the admissions staff. Not saying thats excusable, but it is understandable. Sure, they shoudl double check all this stuff, but as we can see, human errors can occur.

jym626 - After I was deferred I sent in a “Why Tulane” essay, updated transcript, and updated resume. I marked if off my list after I started hearing from other colleges in the last few weeks. There is nothing else I could have done to demonstrate interest except visit, and that’s not a possibilty for my family’s finances.

christena,
Did you have any kind of relationship/email/talk to your regional admissions rep? Did you communicate with him/her or the admissions staff at all? To set yourself apart, you want to not just be another name in a pile. Did you attend a Tulane presentation in your area (if there was one) or meet a tulane rep at a college fair? These are all important ways to stand out and make yourself noticed. Good luck with your other college applications. I am sure you will do well.

I set off by commas that the GC (in another situation) not this one sent the wrong grades. My point was when you have a large class of seniors sending out an average of 10 apps each; so much paper work errors do occur. Whether we think it fair or not, students need to keep track because in the end some things can’t be fixed. Human error occurs.

Tulane for whatever reason did not accept two in state girls who met the criteria and deadlines. I work independently with kids in preparing their resumes for this process. In doing so I see their transcripts which they get from the school. There is no hush-hush. Now that girls are getting information together for Rush; every lady they ask to write a rec will see their resume and transcript.

Mistakes happen. No school, business, or person is exempt. It’s interesting seeing who Tulane accepted and some of these who were declined. Other than this one isolated situation it appears Tulane is filling their class very early with instate kids. Good for them. Like UNC and UVA it appears to make it more desirable, regardless of state school or private. After Katrina they have done an amazing job to make it this way and for the city of New Orleans that is wonderful.

Tulane has the Louisiana Legislative and mayoral scholarships available for instate students, which I agree is wonderful [Tulane University - Tulane Legislative Scholarship Guidelines](http://tulane.edu/government_affairs/scholarship-guidelines.cfm)

I also agree that it is up to the student to stay on top of their applications and be sure everything is received. It must be hard when students are applying to 10+ schools (which I feel is too many, but thats another story). It overburdens both the students and the admissions staff.

Also the GC’s at the high school, I would think.

And the teachers writing the LOR’s, etc etc etc. Wish there was a way to get back to having a reasonable number of applications. Seems that the Common and universal apps have made it too easy to send out more and more and the frenzy has escalated. Adding additional required essays helps a bit, but not enough.

Forgot to mention the Louisiana LEAP Grants for instate students [Tulane University - Louisiana Leveraging Educational Assistance Program (LEAP)](http://tulane.edu/financialaid/grants/leap.cfm) Lots of great opportunities for instate residents. Thats wonderful.

Christena,
Hope you get good news form Emory. Its a wonderful school.
I also think we are seeing that it is important to submit the “Why Tulane” essay with the initial application. Otherwise it may look like an afterthought.

Waitlisted. Knew I should have done the Why Tulane essay… Oh well, I’ll be declining the offer. Tulane wasn’t particularly high on the list. Now on to Ivy Day!

33 ACT
3.9 UW 4.6 W
11/452

Sent from my SCH-I500 using CC

what is the percentage of students that get in to tulane from the waitlist? and does it have anything to do with when/how fast they reply to the invitation to join the waitlist? any factors to enhance chances of admission from the waitlist? already sent senior first half grades…

Hey Brebre12, this past year (2011-2012) 1,009 people accepted a spot on Tulane’s waitlist and 15 were admitted (source: http://tulane.edu/institutional-research/upload/CDS-2011-2012.pdf</a> page 7). So I highly doubt that reserving a spot on the list has anything to do with getting in. I’m not sure exactly what those 15 people did to get in. The best you can do is write a letter, maybe provide some examples of things you’ve done since you filled out your application, and highlight why Tulane is right for you.

Brebre - Take a look at this, I think it answers you exactly. Click on the most recent blog posting to see the entire answer.

Sorry this doesn’t quite relate to decisions (I was accepted EA a while ago) but will you guys please help me if you have the time?

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/tulane-university/1314159-tulane-honors-ucla-please-give-advice.html#post14130999</a></p>

Thank you! Any advice is much appreciated! This is such a hard decision. Ugh.

Had to watch the Kentucky-Louisville game first! Go Cats!! Anyway, see my answer on your other thread.

I have yet to receive any confirmation either way on gibson. will they change my status by the end of the day? all it says is that my application is complete and a decision will be reached as soon as possible. I applied in December and the application said it was complete around jan 12th, even if i am denied, will the website say so? is it likely that i was denied because a decision hasn’t been posted yet?
