Official ubc class of 2014 thread :)

Aloha! I’ve applied. It’s my numero uno. My application is officially complete as of today, with my AP scores and mid-year grades sent in and everything. Now all I have to do is wait! How about you? What’s your take on UBC? What country are you from? Why did you apply? How high do you rank (your number 1,2,3,4, etc.) the school? Have your parents and others given you any flack about wanting to go Canadian? Any support? And finally… what are your stats and have you simply applied, been denied, or gotten accepted? So many questions, so much excitement! :)!! Feel free to ask and/or answer as many Q’s as you like, whether I’ve listed them or not!

Let’s be stoked together and plan our domination of Totem Park and/or Place Vanier! Hahaha. Also, apologies if I come off as kind of wacky, kind of eccentric… college confidential just seems like just a dreary, worrisome, cutthroat place SO MUCH of the time. Not cool! We’re all in the same boat, we’re all anxious/nervous/excited/STOKED, so let’s just chill. Yes?

Also, there obviously aren’t very many of us future Thunderbirds out there… these boards are hit up so rarely! We really have to help each other out, especially given the lack of statistical information available on the internet regarding this university.

And, another question for the list: Where else did you apply?

Well I’ve just finished applying - it’s my number 2 choice.

I also applied to Whitman College, University of Washington, and Stanford.

Odd mix, I know. I’m from the Stanford area and have strong legacy, so I figured what the heck.

But I really want to go to school in Vancouver. My parents would rather I stay in the states, so I applied to the other two colleges to appease them.

If I get into UBC, I’ll go - assuming I don’t get into Stanford (which is a fair assumption).

My stats: 2240 SAT, 3.9 GPA

Your stats are really good though, you do have a shot at Stanford! My parents are the same way about going to school in Vancouver though. They’re like, “Why CANADA?!”. I feel like few people realize how amazing UBC is compared to most large American public universities. After all, it’s like the 34th best university in the world!

Good luck with Stanford and your other two schools as well, though. I actually got rejected from UW just this morning but I’m not too bummed, I wasn’t too keen on going to college 1.7 miles away from where I’ve spent the majority of my life haha. And besides, more room for people that really want to go! :D

I just hope that with my feeble 3.2 UW GPA and not half bad 1930 SAT’s I’ll have a fighting chance… :P

oh gosh…k i am dying to get into ubc…see im canadian, and my fam moved to california, so I got into UCLA, and went, made it through a quarter, but couldnt afford it, when they dropped a 32% increase on tuition, on top of the oos tuition they made made pay though i lived in cal for 2 years.

now im going back to my roots, i also applied to uoft, mcmaster, western, and waterloo. UBC is my fave though, best location, close to home, its a 2-3 hour flight from california, bomb weather, and lots a movies are filmed there…just saying…im a movie buff.

my stats are not great though, mostly my sat, ahh… and even worse my sat subject tests that I ACCIDENTLY sent lol…i didnt know we had the option to choose which were sent, cause we didnt have this option last year…its like i didnt have to send the crappy ones.

heres my stats
gpa: 4.1
sat: 1740
calc ap: 3
bio ap: 3
and the fact that i got into ucla…and went through hell having to leave should gimme atleast some sympathy…i mean i hope it does, i really want to go to ubc. i wish i applied last year…ugh

Your stats aren’t bad at all! A 1740 really isn’t bad! Also, those are difficult ap tests you got 3’s on! I know people with worse statistics who got in and currently go to UBC. I think you definitely have much more than a “chance”! Sorry about UCLA though, California just isn’t doing too hot I guess. Good luck! Post again when you hear back! :D

hey everyone! I’m really glad to finally find a UBC thread, there’s definitely not as much talk about it as the other US schools! I applied early on in the year around November, and I got my acceptance letter about 2 weeks ago! I’m so excited! I’ve never been to Vancouver or really the west coast at all…but it sounds great! My stats are also a little different then you guys, I have a strong gpa (around 3.7) but my scores were awfully low! (23ACT) But I still got in so I think you all have a good chance! Also, I would also recommend that you all look at your application status frequently. I was just looking at mine randomly one day and that’s how I found out I was accepted. About a month later my letter came in the mail, so weird!

Anyway, I’m not sure if it’s my first choice yet, I’m going to visit this march! I also applied to University of Washington too, but I have no idea when I will find out.

Hey! Happy you found us too! That’s so awesome that you’re willing to come and check out the pacific northwest- I’ve lived here all my life and I absolutely love it! The rain really isn’t as big of a deal as most people believe it is anyway. I mean, invest in a jacket with a hood and your hair stays fine, and the trees and flowers and forest and basically everything nature related absolutely thrives! It’s pretty sick. The only real downside about the rain is that it can ruin a good longboarding sesh quick…but in those instances, why not just snowboard? UBC does offer a $400 seasons pass to Whistler!!!

Anyway, that’s great to hear you got accepted dude! I submitted my app around mid November as well, and believe me, I check my status everyday!

You’re gonna love UBC when you go visit- it’s amazing!! Sooo clean and nice and pretty and unlike in America, people actually wear nice clothes to class! It’s very European and appears to be quite progressive.

And goodluck with UW too- they’re already accepting/rejecting people so be on the lookout for a small, purple envelope with pawprints on it! :D

Hey people, so i applied to UBC too, it just appealed to me and Vancouver seems gorgeous and UBC seems to get quite a few internationals which is a huge plus pour moi. So my stats are 1790 sat, 760 bio sat II, 670 bio sat II. Umm, i don’t really know my gpa, i’m an IB student unfortunately, arrrggh it’s so frustrating! I’m from Malawi. The problem is i really love all the schools i applied to, UCB, UCLA, Yale, Brown, Pomona, Pitzer and McGill so i’m in a bit of a pickle, a big juicy pickle. Haulfield…i LOVE your enthusiasm about UBC! It’s made me remember what i saw in UBC when i applied, I hope you get in! :)

Yeah I’m excited to see it! Did it feel really big to you while you were there? Thats one of the things I’m worried about because I heard that since its so big there is not the greatest campus feel. I hope that’s not true!

Is Whistler a mountain? I can’t wait to ski out there! Heard it’s way different then east coast skiing. I can’t wait to watch on the olympics!

Hi there! UBC definitely has a LOT of international regard. I always try and mention the whole “it’s the 34th best college in the world thing” whenever I’m talking to a skeptic. I hear IB/AP looks really good to UBC, and your test scores are awesome as well! Aww, haha, hope that you get in too, thewarmheart! And good luck deciding on a school once you’ve gotten all your letters back, you picked some great ones!!

Umm, well, it does feel really big, like a city in fact! But I don’t necessarily think it’s a bad thing. It’s like a collegiate microcosm on the outskirts of Vancouver, basically. My tour guide did say that because the university is divided into faculties that it doesn’t feel as big as it really is, like, you get the benefits- such as the big-school facilities with medium-school social benefits. I’ve heard the same about there not being much campus life, but that’s only from guidebooks and whack college review sites. Talking to kids who actually go there, they say that UBC has so much stuff to get involved with and so many opportunities to meet and kick it with others, that as long as you’re at least a little bit extroverted, you should be fine. I mean, at a school where (I kid you not) your faculty will occasionally throw a beer garden where profs and students can just kick it and party, how can anyone say that it lacks campus life!? I just think that because frats and sports and dorm life aren’t as big up north as there are down here, people look down on it… but it’s really just different is all.:)

There’s also a special thing called Jumpstart for international kids two weeks before class starts that sounds kind of cool. My tour guide was American and she went and she said it really helped. Basically it’s like college before college, and you also get to learn things about Canada and the Canadian school system and probably/hopefully about kilometers and their funny money and poutine. You could probably meet a lot of people during that!

Also, is Whistler a mountain? Dude, Whistler is THE mountain. It’s Whistler-Blackcomb to be exact, and it’s an absolutely epic, absolutely massive mountain. It’s my favorite place to ski or ride and you’re gonna be seeing a whoooole lot of it at the olympics!

i just got into ubc vancouver last night !
and i’m definitely going

Congrats! Ahhh hearing about all these acceptances gets me really really stoked but also really nervous! If you don’t mind me asking, what are your stats?

thanks  but don’t worry about it, you’ll be fine!
i applied to the forestry faculty and i had a gpa of 3.75 last semester and i got 1850 on my sats. not the best, but good enough i guess? but it was forestry, so yeah.

Not the best, true, but definitely more than good enough! Considering the avg. GPA is a 2.0 and the avg. SAT score is a 1500, that’s awesome!

woah really? i definitely thought that they were higher…
what faculty did you apply to?

Nope! That’s the average for America. We aren’t exactly the smartest, haha. I applied to arts as my first choice, in pursuit of a BA/BFA English Lit./Creative Writing double-major degree, and science as a back up which I won’t even be considered for because I’m missing a semester of math and haven’t gotten the “C” minimum grade necessary for the “up to the senior level” requirement. So basically just arts.

thats sounds sickk, the arts programs look like tons of fun
do you think you’ll get in?
