Official ubc class of 2014 thread :)

hey, everyone! i’m still in high school but i’m a native vancouverite… haven’t really thought about university yet, but vancouver’s a pretty awesome city, and i suggest all of you try ocean kayaking at jericho! best sport ever, honestly.

congrats to everyone who got in!

thnx yellowapple for that info on U ofT!

thnx holden im into sustainability and may take up env. engg later and soo that help s a lot…!!!

Hi everyone

I am new to all of this so please be kind! haha

I’m a British student from the UK and I’ve applied to the Faculty of Arts at UBC Really hoping to go there, fingers crossed! I submitted my applications on the March 6, so does anyone have any idea when I might hear back?

What is everyone thinking of majoring in? Are there any more British students on here?

Hi Leo

I’m guessing you’re a fellow British student?? I am assuming so if you have predicted A levels :P

How did you submit your SAT scores? I’ve sent off my transcripts of GCSEs and predicted A levels, but didn’t really bother with my SAT scores…should I?

What are you planning on majoring in?

send in your sat’s if there good, but i dont think they require uk applicants to send sat’s make sure to check the website.

and you send your sat’s by going on collegeboard, going to your scores and sending to additional colleges, its not free though
& @shanoid i sent mine mid january and JUST heard back a couple weeks ago…they reaccess applications by May, and the hold applications by June, so you could either hear back fast(there are people who got decisions like 2 weeks after applying) or it could take a couple months(like it did me, and quite a few) I know they tend not to keep the intl’s waiting too long though

as for me, im really really nervous that im going to have to go to toronto, my dad keeps pushing it on me, tells me to think about it, but then doesnt even bother asking me what i think. he says he’ll pay for toronto…dont know what thats suppose to mean…mann i know toronto st george is prestigious, but i dont want to fail and have no chance at med school.

hi. I got accepted to Natural resources conservation science  I applied for it because sounds like a promising program. I am not smart but kinda happy that i received it much earlier than i expected. anyways I am living in Toronto area- york region and the biggest reason i chose BC is that there is a great outdoor like lakes, oceans, mountains and stuffs…anyways ppl only kno like UT/UBC/mcgill so… im kinda here to talk about skwls in east… i am writing here to give you guys a little idea with a typical Toronto area high school student’s eye :)… first of all kids here think that going BC is crazy… even to me, my friends call me crazy… hahaha anyways we have great skwls here that many ppl dont reli kno about… for business skwl-Schulich(at york u), Laurier, Queens, Ivey at Westerrn ontario. Engineering(esp.Comp) is Waterloo. journalism-media/arts is Carlton,Ryerson, laurier. and pre-med/medical is McMaster. The skwls i listed are REALLY competitive… no lies… they almost require 90+ and those of you who dont kno much about canadian system 90+ is really really hard… and that doesn’t really guarantee the enterance(n of course… kinda except for art programs but they are very competitive too at those univs). and @yellowapple, you r true UofT isn’t a good idea and can be the worst choice!! Infact UofT is somewhat overrated. kids here dont wanna go to UofT but trying to get the skwls i listed above… seriously… if they could, they wanna go to these skwls they are the best and they are Really recognized. UT degree compare to those skwls degree?? those skwls degrees are more recognized. anyways what i wanna say is UT sounds BAD real bad. you can just come to UBC or somethiing u kno? Oh and PS. McMaster has fantastic programs to prep you for med-careers. Life science is good and Health Science is like your golden ticket to the med skwl!! u kno mcmaster is the Best in medical studies right? They are very very very very hard to get in n you should have interview too! haha but once you are in you will be a doctor  everyone’s dying to go there. n not gonna lie… UT is BAD idea…

trust, i dont want to go to toronto, i want to go to bc, thats my top choice, my dad is being very narrowminded right now… but i have to disagree that mcmaster and laurier, and ryerson, and a few others are better than toronto…in the us, toronto is more known than all those schools you listed (except bc and mcgill) and toronto is difficult to get into, unless its utm or utsc…so and because its harder to do good at toronto, if you do, your degree is that much more respected. if i didnt get into ubc id be for sure going to toronto, but bc is really my dream right now. i got into mcmaster, western as well…but toronto owns those schools really, except mcmaster’s health science, but thats ONE program…so yeahh. my plan right now is to go to ubc

Hey man it’s your life/future, and honestly in the grand scheme of things-especially for an undergrad degree there’s not much of a difference between the quality of ubc vs toronto.

And as you already noted, I hear there’s tons of grade deflation at U of T, so you’ll either have no life, or any chances at grad school or med/law school are going to be diminished because of that factor.

Not to mention, imo Toronto is an awful city compared to Van.

i knoww so many reasons not to go to toronto, im going to tell my dad them, and prayyy he just lets me go to bc.

WOW this thread has simply exploded you guys!!! Congrats to all the newcomers who got in, and good luck to those who are still waiting! I just got back from degree in a day. It was both fun and informative! It got me even more stoked on UBC, if that’s even possible! But assuming that most of you have read many (maybe even all?) of my posts on this board, you already knew that! I am more than ready to be a thunderbird…it’s crazy! And guess what? My mom said it’s okay if I do jumpstart! I’m so excited! :D!!!

thats so exciting holden!! i can’t wait to meet everyone and put faces to cc names! does anyone know when we sign up for jumpstart?

i just put my deposit in a couple days ago so now its official!!

Me neither! I mean, to be honest, if you read the UBC prospective undergrads facebook wall (the page where you can ask a question to UBC and get a relatively personalized answer) or join any of the UBC 2014 groups, you can make some educated guesses! I’m pretty sure I know who two of the CCers on this thread are because of that. And a lot of people are even adding one another as friends from said facebook group! It’s kind of funny, kind of awesome.

Hey I just looked it up and the applications for jumpstart open in may! Did you know its $980?! Wow I need to save that money asap.

Hey, thanks so much yellowapple and holdencaufield1 for your answers to my questions. I’m not so worried about the huge classes anymore. I was accepted to the Faculty of Science program but I was wondering if anyone knows if it is possible to change programs even after the deadlines have passed? I really want to be in the Faculty of Arts program so that I can take lots of arts and some science. If anyone knows anything, or who I should contact, that would be extremely helpful! I really want to go to UBC but I dont want to be stuck taking a bunch of classes I have no interest in.

When I first visited UBC I was thinking about psychology, and while I was there I talked to an international students advisor about whether I should do the faculty of arts psych or faculty of science psych. She said that either would be fine, because with the exception of commerce, UBC doesn’t have requirements that need to be completed during first year. They like to keep it open so that you can explore what you want to do and have a good idea of what you want to pursue by the time you declare your major at the end of second year. Also, it’s easier to go from science to arts than arts to science. I think you’d totally be able to switch and that it wouldn’t be difficult at all! Just to make sure though, robert.tudhope@ubc.ca is the arts academic advising director’s email address. He would probably answer your question! And I know it’s okay to email him because he gave out his card during an info session I went to a while back. You should be fine! :D

Me too, i wanna change from faculty of land and food systems to faculty of science. i got a little confused when applying lol…theres a live chat april 19 so i plan on asking all my questions then. and i need to visit bc, ive never been.

yellowapple you’re in luck! you should go sometime soon. the weather’s been AMAZING! seattle weather and vancouver weather differ by like, a degree so i’m pretty sure it’s like 64 F up there as well. that hardly ever happens in early april! it usually rains from mid october to mid may just about nonstop, but for some unknown yet awesome reason it let up early this year!

Hi everybody! I’m from the United States and recently got accepted into the Faculty of Human Kinetics. Has anybody else gotten in to that faculty? I haven’t found anybody else on the facebook sites or on here so far so its a little bit unnerving. I’m super excited to go to UBC though…I’m definitely going to be up there this fall  Congrats on everybody getting in as well! This thread really helped :)

I didn’t know that Jumpstart is so expensive! But I’m still probably going to go- hope to meet people and just learn more about the campus and Vancouver. So excited! Can’t wait to finally meet you guys in a couple of months!
