Official UC Berkeley 2015 Transfer Thread

yes, of course it is. :wink: . Very well written. I was laughing halfway through, which is rare. I’m a tough critic.

just curious but i read that it’s easy to change your major once admitted into uc berkeley. is that true? if so is it possible to change from a non impacted major into an impacted major under the same school?

@trnsfrstdnt

It depends on the major.

Agree with @ocnative. At least in terms of UCLA there does appear to be leeway if they are in the same dept - English major (impacted) and Am Lit and Culture major are in the English Dept and supposedly you can switch to impacted. Same with engineering. Within the broad L&S, probably not as easily doable, but within the dept, if it’s anything like UCLA, probably easier, at their discretion.

Ocnative will have a better take on the Berkeley nuances.

@ocnative‌

so from a non impacted major to econ I’m guessing it’s hard?

As a transfer they won’t let you to change to an impacted major unless you have a very (but very) good reason for that. It’s also not that easy to change colleges, so if the major you want is in a different college there is a zero chance it would happen.

sounds like you’ve got a great chance of getting in!

Doesn’t Berkeley admit by college, so technically it’s possible to change majors, as long as you have the major courses and the major is within the same college.

sorry i should’ve specified. under the same college* am i allowed to change from for example, statistics into economics? given that i finished all my pre reqs for econ prior to transferring?

@Moshe1010‌

Econ transfers as far as I know are admitted as pre-econ and after a semester (as long as they pass/get certain GPA) they get into the major. I’m not sure though since I’m in hardcore sciences (MCB/NST). Look at the plan of each major, maybe you can double (which is pretty doable and sometimes easy in Berkeley, like in my case). They allow you to overlap two classes from your upper dev list, so if the difference between the two are 3-4 more classes, then you can get another major at a minor class load (my second major has only 3 more classes after the overlap).

@trnsfrstdnt
I applied last year as psychology major and got accepted to Cal, I was listed as undeclared until I applied for the major. During orientation I talked to some advisers because I had some intentions in changing major to biology, and none of them said I couldn’t (I didn’t end up changing because I didn’t satisfy all of the prereqs). If it’s under the same college, I’m pretty sure it’s possible to change majors, but I would ask advisers (if you were accepted) just to make sure.

@Yukaris‌ how many pre reqs were u missing? bc for my other university i am missing 4 major pre reqs for a NON-impacted major

@FUTUREUCLABRUIN1‌ ahh now i regret that i chose econ as my major for berkeley, hopefully i get in and if not maybe re apply with a different non impacted major next year :frowning:

@trnsfrstdnt
If you are admitted, you can change it. A lot of people do, though it depends if you’ll be able to get the classes you’ll need to declare the specific major. For instance, an Env Economics or Political Economy major can declare Economics so long as they take ECON 100A/101A and STATS 20/21 in the Fall. You’ll need to meet the GPA requirements to declare the major.

Also, you need to talk to the advisors prior to CalSo.

thanks @ocnative! sadly i didn’t find out about this until now. hopefully i’ll get accepted with my impacted major(econ)

@trnsfrstdnt well I completed all of the prereqs for psych, which was what I applied under, but for biology, I was basically missing all of the prereqs (since I wasn’t interested in bio until the semester before I transferred).

@yukaris hm yea for my other college they offer math/econ but i only finished the econ portion of it, so about 4/8 pre reqs

Will we have a day for transfer admitted students at Berkeley ? I don’t see anything on the school website

@boy561‌

Well kind of. Cal Day is their main admit day but that happens in mid-April and is geared towards freshman. Transfers do have an admit day but it’s not as big - if you’re from socal, they’ll have an admit day for you that will be close to you.
