Official UC Berkeley Haas Transfers Fall 2012

Damn nervous about applying :(

Will reply to any comments or advice needed Thanks

Are ECs SUUUUUUPER important for Haas? Cause I’m not exactly excelling in that area.

On their website, Ecs account for 15%

Hello! Bringing this back. I’m also applying to Haas for next Fall. I can’t believe it’s application season already, ahh! Ready to be a future “Haas-hole” as my friend said. I think he had the right to say it since he graduated from there, haha.

Anywayyy, onto the fun stuff:

GPA: 3.87
Units completed: 49 after this fall

*All A’s except for that one B in Calculus 2 (Lesson learned: when all of your friends tell you not to take a professor, heed their advice).
I just have one prereq left for Spring - the second accounting course.
All breadth requirements will be done by Spring also! (If not, Haas did change their breadth requirements to allow transfers to fulfill them in Berkeley.)

EC’s:

VP of Communications and Technology (2010-2011 school year) and Senior VP (2011-2012 school year) for Students in Free Enterprise
Historian (Spring '11) for Phi Beta Lambda (business club)
I also won the Fall 2010 Phi Beta Lambda Scholarship

Intern at BOOKS for the BARRIOS (non-profit organization) and organized a Children’s Peace Walk that got postponed to a later date
Management Consultant at Business Process Outsourcing Elite (start-up)
100+ hours volunteer work

I’m still working on the essays. I’m debating on whether I should mention that I’m an AB540 student in one essay. It is a struggle because I can’t get a job or a license with my situation and yet I was able to make use of my resources and got these EC’s. I don’t know if mentioning my status would harm me. Any thoughts on that? I’m pretty confident with my writing skills. I was supposed to be an English tutor on campus but could not continue training because of the reason I mentioned above.

Any comments or advice would be greatly appreciated! :)

feros- Can you give me some info on that second accounting class pre req you’re talking about? Haas only requires a intro to bus, no accounting. You know something I don’t know? uh oh

Accounting is not a prerequisite, although it is useful to take an introduction to accounting course so you at least have a base on financial terms and elementary knowledge on public accounting.

Mestudystuff - sorry! I’m getting my prereqs confused. It’s not a prerequisite for Haas, but it is for UCLA. I’m starting to think it’s for Haas because all my business major friends take the accounting series but don’t mention UCLA.

Thanks for clearing that up feros.

Changing the subject, didn’t Haas require calc 1 and 2 only for their math req? I just checked out assist and it states its bus calc 1&2 OR calc 1&2. did that recently change or was it always like that?

I thought it was always a choice to take either Bus Calc or Calc. I haven’t heard that they preferred one over the other but most Haas applicants end up taking Calc 1&2 because other UCs accept it.

Hey guys,

I currently have a 3.88 in CC because of a stupid breadth class, I am considering applying to Haas but feel as if its really difficult with the B+ i have(non pre req). Considering Cal is the only school i want to go to should i apply to Haas or econ b/c i have Calc 1a right now and it seems to be on the difficult side; scared of getting a B. Should i apply for Haas or UCB Econ; because i feel as if most haas transfers have 4.0 :-/

@Berkeley

The average GPA for the entering 2011 class was a 3.81 therefore not everyone had 4.0. As you aware, the biggest difference this year is the elimination of the breadth requirement. Since students who would have been disqualified in previous years are now eligible, the competition is only going to increase.

Are you in the process of taking Calc I this semester, and II next?

@Mitchapalooza

Yes i am currently in the process of taking Calc I this semester and Calc II next semester

My personal opinion?

Apply to Econ. Your GPA is outstanding but I fear it won’t be sufficient this year for Haas. (Sadly, I think the average admit GPA will start to rise to UCLA’s BizEcon level.) Additionally, you will not have completed Calc II by the time of your application. Think about it this way. This year due to the elimination of the breadth requirement, additional applicants will be eligible for admission. Out of those applicant, numerous will have a 4.0. In that essence, you’re already behind.

Another scenario. Applicant #1 and you. For the sake of the argument both of your essays and ECs have the same weight. Your GPA is the same, however; applicant #1 has completed all his prerequisites while you still have to complete Calc II in the spring. If there were only two spots, applicant #1 would have an advantage for that reason.

I know the UCs state you have until the spring to complete all your prerequisites, but with impacted majors such as BizAdmin and UCLA’s BizEcon any advantage you can get will only benefit you.

Although Econ is also an impacted major, I believe you will have a better chance with Econ, even if it’s marginal.

I’d say econ. Looking at the students’ salaries and job placements, Econ and Bus majors look VERY similar. Goldman Sachs, Deloitte, Ernst & Young, Cisco, Google, etc.

https://career.berkeley.edu/Major/Econ.stm</a>
https://career.berkeley.edu/Major/BusAd.stm</a></p>

Hmmm…

@MeStudyStuff

It depends on what you want to do and even though Econ and BusAd both have Goldman on their list, you should note the difference between the Job Title. For example, the majority of BusAd majors aspire to work in IB. On the Econ report only 5 were listed as IB related job titles compared to the ~10 in BizAdmin. I do agree the employers are very similar between the two lists but there are some distinctions. Once again, this all depends on what the person wants to his/her occupation to be.

How come no one talks on here anymore? Decisions are almost out!

@enprovence i know!! im so scared :(

@enprovence, nobody talks here because all business major applicants keep to themselves :X

Same!!!

And yeah, but why keep it to themselves when we have no control over the decisions… :confused:

And @irvine2014, do you live in Irvine or are you trying to transfer to UCI???

^^ trying to transfer to UCI
