[li] why you think you were accepted/rejected/defered: supposedly berkeley doesn't really care about recommendations and extra materials etc. since I had no junior transcript, and the UCal application was very finnicky about how grades were entered, it was extremely difficult to express the positive aspects of the uniqueness of my situation. All they saw was 'this kid went to Japan and didn't have any grades for a whole year'. Well...that's because I was learning to speak the language my classes were being taught in, lol. I came back to get an 800 on the Japanese SAT II, but that thing is wicked easy anyway. Point is, as I take it, UCal is a very numbers-driven application and my strengths lay in my uniqueness, which was difficult to express here.[/li][/ul]Other Factors: OOS. :P

Subjective:

* Essays: thought they were only slightly above average, but apparently I know how to sell myself well.
* Hook (if any): it isn't necessarily a "hook" per se, but my circumstances must've been in my favor somehow. I was an AR applicant for my ADD and Tourettes, had an apparently great recommendation written for me, wrote convincingly about my determination to succeed despite my disorders (though it helped that my transcript backs it up. I went from struggling and getting a 3.75 one year to a 4.4 average for the next year to 4.59 this year, not cumulative of all successive years of course).

Location/Person:

* State or Country: California
* School Type: public
* Ethnicity: chinese caucasian
* Gender: female

Other Factors:

* Extracurriculars: science olympiad is my primary ec. I've had various ones I tried out in past years though, like the japanese culture club, the engineering club, etc.
* Why I think I was accepted: I heavily emphasized my belief that success is only success when it's made under the same conditions as everyone else, regardless of what personal circumstances may be had. Also, although my cumulative stats are subpar, my junior and senior year I showed how the changes I made in order to compensate for my disorders made me into an effecient and creative problem solver. I also explained that because I rarely allow myself to be accomodated for due to my disorders, my grades and test scores might possibly reflect inaccurate insight into my actual capabilities and intelligence. My improvement must've also showed I was somehow promising and could actually contribute what I said I would be able to in my essays.
* Other thoughts: Despite all this, I still feel highly undeserving. But maybe I'm proof that Berkeley isn't always all about high stats.
