I am starting this thread in order to consolidate much such after information into one area
Please take this opportunity to post questions specific questions about transferring from a California community college to a UC as well as answer question for others.

-don't use this to gauge your chance at a UC.. there is a specific thread for that!!

-search for your question before posting it. Don't waste everyone's time by asking a question that has already been asked!

-answer someone's question only if you are 100% sure. Some person's future may depend on the information they find here.

good luck everyone! lets hope this thread doesn't fail. -___-

Yes. you must complete all major courses before applying to UCSD. UCSD recommends you to finish all prereqs for your major even if you are considering tagging to ucsd.

Well… “Must” is a very strong word. TAG guarantees you admission to the university, but not to any specific residential college or major. TAG does not require you to complete any major’s preparation requirements.

Now, at UCSD, only a few majors are impacted (the biology-related majors), and historically, it has been very rare for a student to be accepted under TAG and not get into their major and into either their first or second choice residential college.

As to your specific question: No, it’s not required to complete every major prep requirement. Missing one will not result in an automatic rejection. However, you definitely should, in case the number of applicants in a particular year vastly exceeds the number of openings. Completing all of the prep requirements, especially with high grades, mades you that much more competitive.

quick question. Bio major; would you recommed I take the Physics for engineers or physics for sciences. Would it make my application more competative if I take one or the other since I’m applying to schools like UCLA, CAL, UCSD, UCI.

you would take the class that is of more use to your major. In your cases, it would be physics for sciences. I can’t say whether or not it would give you and edge in the eyes of application reviewers. But, its better to stick to topics related to your major as it would benefit you the most.

No you don’t have to have all your prereqs done when you apply. You just have to plan on having them finished by the end of the spring. When you apply you tell them what classes you have taken and the classes you are taking (fall) and the classes you plan to take (spring).

One thing to think about is that the more prereqs you do have done before you apply, the more they will be able to estimate your ability to do well in your major.

It’s possible to get accepted into a non-competitive major without taking any of the major prerequisites. You’ll just have to take the lower division courses at the UC.

This isn’t advisable for the reasons laid out by myself and nikki3000, but I just want it clear that you won’t be automatically rejected for not having all prerequisites done (as you would be for not having your two English courses done, for instance).
