@highseas This may be true to some extent but by far and away only applies to a few applicants. Not everyone who got waitlisted can get into ivies

@juhuatai tru im so not getting accepted into columbia

Wait listed in u of chicago details letter
Good luck to you all

My friend got into princeton (EA), MIT, Columbia (likely), Dartmouth(likely0, but waitlisted today at U Chicago, I do not know. But for those with high stats, please do not give up, better news yet to come…
Do not be dicouraged by U Chicago’s yield game …

truth123, with a grandiose opinion of Chicago and its students and perhaps a chip on the old shoulder.

highsea, suffering from a major attack of sour grapes.

Well, this thread is going downhill fast.

Got waitlisted. I have now been waitlisted by Washu and UChicago. Oh well.

2320, 3 800 sat 2s, 3.97, waitlisted.
I’ve gotten into caltech, duke (likely), and USC with full tuition. I don’t have anything against uchicago (I don’t really want to go there, like highseas said, just threw it in with the common app: did the supp on jan second, still really good though) but I don’t really know why I wasn’t accepted…

If you’re standing around saying, “I didn’t want to go here, but I threw in an app anyways at the last second to stroke my ego, why didn’t they accept me???” then I think you should engage in the worthwhile activity of self-reflection.

HYP kids have weak minds?

Lol wat

No.

neltharion, I did my duke supp on the last day too (and caltech. AND usc, on the honors deadline, for that matter). I really, really liked my uchicago supp though…

for the record, U chicago gave 1-week extensions to those that didn’t apply by the deadline.

my friend who got into harvard, stanford, and yale got WL-ed at U of C last year too, so to everyone else, don’t feel too bad!

and to those accepted- congratulations! U of C is a great school :)

Bluenotebook2
My friend who got into good schools did exactly like you did, he turned in his app on 12/30, two days before yours.

It’s the yield game U Chicago is playing, they calculated that you probably won’t go there. It’s not difficult to figure out. They do accept very high stat kids knowing that they will not attend, but that is for the purpose of officical demographic release, to boost their score average.

Apologies for being snippy. But I don’t think you can really expect a non-snippy response to “I didn’t want to come, but why was I rejected?” Beside truth123 and highsea (who is probably the very friend he is speaking of), it’s hard to resist the urge to be antagonistic.

I really, really don’t think it’s a yield game. The simple fact is - their acceptance rate was 8.8% in this cycle. When you get in the single digits, that’s a lottery.

In other news, I got a call from a New York number on my way home from school and freaked out because I thought it was a likely from Columbia (my first thought… don’t judge me! haha). Turned out it was some lady calling with a survey about my college application experience. Hey, thanks but no thanks…?

Bluenotebook2, please post on 3/28 if you get into ivies!
This will prove my U Chicago yield game theory. 8.8% does not mean anything, most kids threw in their app to u Chicago last minute after EA deferral. That does not mean they want to go to U Chicago.

hahahha that’s a big “if”, highsea, but for sure!
CC definitely helped me out a ton, I owe it back to the next generation :P

@bluenotebook2 Ok so I got in with a 2320 3 800’s and a 3.8 GPA. I was rejected at Caltech and but got a likely from Columbia. This proves that its really up to the admissions director. I showed a super strong interest in Caltech and still got rejected, not even waitlisted and you were accepted. I didn’t visit UChicago and I still got in…in fact I didn’t show super interest either. You guys need to understand that every admissions counselor is different and thus people get waitlisted or rejected from certain schools and accepted at others

Juhuatai, you’ve forgotten that only anecdotes that support highsea’s Theory of Yield Protection are valid. Get outta here.

hahahaha neltharion, I guess some people just can’t get over it. His theory is probably true to some extent but is definitely not the definitive reason why he got rejected.

Highsea I understand what you are saying but I personally never considered U of C a “backup” for ivies but rather categorized it as another Ivy. With an acceptance rate less than half the ivies this year, I think it is unfair to consider U of C any lesser than those schools. In fact, I somewhat agree that U of C is better in its own respects in that it promotes innovation and intellectual curiosity maybe more than the ivies do.

Although your yield game theory may be correct, I don’t appreciate your condescending tone towards U of C as less than ivies because I really do not think it is, at all.

Also I was waitlisted. :/

Juhutai- first of all, CONGRATS! that’s amazing- both schools are really awesome! :)

I didn’t show interest for U of C or caltech in the least… different schools must want different things, obviously! I was just kind of surprised because I thought I was a good fit for U of C. guess not! I also made the mistake of not interviewing at all for U of C, so guess I shouldn’t have been too surprised, though. Best of luck to the both of us for the weeks to come!
