Official UChicago 2017 RD Thread

Bluenotebook2, Yeah Congrats on Caltech! Are you going to go? Yeah well now it’s time for the Ivy’s so good luck to you too!

My daughter applied Early Action at UChicago and MIT and was deferred at both.
She has since been accepted to Caltech, MIT, UChicago, and today got a likely letter from Cornell and awhile ago one from Wellesley. I was suprised about the UChicago acceptance as she got a letter from regional person awhile back…that read to me as polite and very nice kiss off. she visited but was not offered an alum interview… and then Uchicago accepted her. Congrats and best wishes to all.

I would not be surprised if some amount of yield protection were at play. I submitted my app on 12/30, didn’t write any optional essays, and didn’t do an interview. On the other hand, a friend of mine with similar objective stats also did those things and got in, so it is probably just random.

Highsea you are basing a great deal of your opinion on self created facts. “A friend said, someone visited, I knew a guy.”. Likewise that you don’t know individual stats of all applicants (rank, ACT, school standings, GPA, awards and life experiences). Also your post operates under the assumption that some of these other applicants with lower SAT scores haven’t been accepted elsewhere or have likely letters.

waitlisted. Do you think I might have time to retake my SAT?

That’s be a waste of time Kdavs

@desafinado i dont think yield protection is a huge deal, i think its mostly just random like other top schools. i was deferred and hadnt spoken to anyone at the school since and i was just accepted. i also submitted my app on the last day possible for EA, 11/9, which was later than usual because of hurricane sandy. at the same time, i was rejected at MIT and waitlisted at WashU, both schools on Chicago’s level. all these schools are just looking for different things- yield protection is a very small factor at most

on a side note does anyone know if there is an admitted students facebook group?

UChicago is NOT rejecting overqualified students. It is an amazing school, ranked in the top 5 by US News this year…better than half the Ivies. Maybe it’s concerned about yield but it wouldn’t reject people because they’re “too” qualified. UChicago simply looks for a certain type of person, reflected in essays and whatnot. Plus…8.8% acceptance rate. They accepted less than 1/10 of the applicant pool so they had to waitlist and reject a LOT of highly qualified people, as with all top schools. At this level part of it is luck.

I was waitlisted with a 1910 sat and 3.7 gpa. So I obviously wasn’t “over-qualified”…

highsea, were you rejected ? Why are you in a UChicago thread is you think that the University is so inferior to Harvard ? Wasting your time here, you have zero credibility. UChicago is a superb University , worldwide recognize . We do not need, or want your nonsense comments.

There is no need to get so flustered. He is merely exercising his right to express an opinion. To the people who were wait-listed, find out whether or not students from your high schools usually matriculate at Chicago once they are admitted. From anecdotal experience, I believe that you will have a better shot of getting off the wait-list if students from your high school traditionally accept Chicago’s offer of admission.

Waitlisted with SAT:2080 GPA:4.01 ACT: 31

I’m a legacy applicant too, i think its cause I didn’t take enough AP classes… Or my essay wasn’t good enough. Today was a sad day :/

UChicago apparently had higher average SAT scores than all the Ivies and Stanford/MIT. Their top 10 percentile stat is one of the highest as well (more than HYP and tied with MIT). A small amount of yield protection may very well be at play, but to argue that UChicago is not accepting “over-qualified” applicants (as if there is such a thing) is preposterous.

Moderators note: Please be civil to each other. If people keep throwing insults at each other and schools, this thread will be closed.

It is stressful at this time of the year but your scores and stats do not always get one into a school. Every school is trying to figure out who fits in and who may show up if admitted. So someone getting likelies at one or admissions at another high profile school may not make the cut at a different high profile school because they have admitted one or two clones of you on paper already.

Chicago admitted 668 fewer kids from last year to this year. They also probably set some new trend this year. In a rare occurrence of its kind, Chicago had almost equal or fewer admits than EA in RD (not percentage but actual numbers) which you would probably never see for any other school.

^ Thank you for being the voice of reason. Sheesh, guys.

Waitlisted

36 ACT/3.98 GPA/Supposedly awesome essays :frowning: guess not.

Does anyone know if merit aid was posted along with acceptances on the account (like at the same time)? So if we didn’t see any…we didn’t get any?

^My merit aid was tacked on in a separate link on the uChicago portal, but I’ve also heard stories of people getting it a few weeks after acceptance.

luv2dance1995, contact your regional counselor/officer and ask They do give out more merit scholarships in April. That was my experience.

do rd admits get scarves?
