@WCF: I think it’s your major. If your stats are the same as most people’s, the major you’re applying for is probably just really competitive.

That could be the case. But if it was, couldn’t they have just put me in my “Undeclared” alternate major? Haha… I guess it’s not that simple though. Undeclared was actually my top choice… but I must have mixed them up in the application!

Also they “outlawed” (I still think it’s practiced) Affirmative Action in California… So, being Khmer I think doesn’t stand out enough unless you added how you yourself overcame the difficulty and turned it into something. That’s what my HS teachers told me when I tried that essay… I ended up writing about other things.

Are you Khmer? Hehe yeah I tried not to play the race game too much. Playing the race/sympathy card isn’t my style. I instead emphasized hardships associated with being raised by parents who had just came out of a war-torn country penny less. For example, having to work for the majority of my life at their business (and thus not having time for EC’s), and how that creates work ethic, discipline, responsibility, etc.

I played the “race” card by saying I’ve been a traveling immigrant to a lot of places

I kinda spoke about how I attribute my personality and way of thinking to my ethnicity because I was educated in a different way than others.

Worked for me
