Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected (strengths/weaknesses):
Admission Decision: ACCEPTED Overall GPA: 3.4 Major GPA: 3.5 Major Pre-reqs Completed (Y/N): All except for calculus will be done by the end of Spring 2016. Major: Psychology B.A. TAP (Y/N): No Honors/Scholars Program (Y/N): Honors Program at my CC. IGETC (Complete/Incomplete): Completed by Spring '16. Personal statements: 9/10. I mainly wrote about how I was a re-entry student after trying and failing to get going at my community college seven years ago, and about how I am a first-generation college student who didn’t have parents that could be counted on after they divorced each other my senior year of high school. Extracurriculars & Honors/Awards: President of Phi Theta Kappa, President of Alpha Gamma Sigma, Intern at 7 Cups of Tea (a psychology company), Student Ambassador at my CC, and previous English tutor at my community college (though that has nothing to do with my major). State (if domestic applicant): Clovis, California
Applied: Cal State Monterey Bay, Fresno State, San Francisco State, San Diego State, UC Berkeley, UC Irvine, UC Santa Cruz, and UC Santa Barbara. Accepted: Cal State Monterey Bay, Fresno State, San Francisco State, UC Irvine, and UC Santa Barbara. Rejected: UC Santa Cruz and San Diego State Waiting: UC Berkeley
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected (strengths/weaknesses): For UCI, I think I was accepted because of a combination between my recent GPA, extra-currics, and personal statement. To be quite honest, my entire community college transcript is a wreck. When I was inputting it into the UC application, it looked ugly. The first five pages of my transcript are Ws and Fs. Then you get to the sixth page and A’s start appearing. I think that upward trend, as well as the explanation provided in my personal statement, really helped my acceptance. The extra-curriculars always help and I advise anyone who is planning to apply to a UC that takes a holistic approach to their applicants–which I think only applies to UC Irvine, UCLA, and UC Berkeley–to become involved in a school club and gain an officer position in that club. It shows that you’re involved and that you care about being part of your CC’s campus community, which I think is something the UCs are interested in seeing in applicants.
