Official UCI Fall 2016 Transfer Waitlist Thread

I’m hoping a few spots open up… I was following the Berkeley thread and a ton of people on that board who is in my major were accepted (if Berkeley offers you admission, chances are you’ll take it). While it’s ideal if those folks remembered to decline UCI, some will wait until the SIR deadline cancels them out (here’s to karma catching up to those people!). Hopefully we learn soon, I need to know whether to stay put or start packing to move to the UC that did accept me.

Electrical Engineering major here, waitlisted to UCI.
I really wanted to go to UCI but I’m not feeling very hopeful, I’m already looking for jobs/housing in SLO. I’m still curious to see what UCI says though. The wait sucks. :’(

@uisforutah Congratulations for UCSD! Why don’t you want to go? I am sure you will be fine if you choose to go. Is that the major you have at UCI as well?

I filed my appeal today which includes the following things: My letter (boost in GPA from 3.7 to 3.78 and summer internship with Intel), signed document by professors stating that I am on pace to get an A in the courses, one letter of rec from my cc transfer director and 2 letters of rec from my professors. I know its overkill but I couldn’t say no since one of my profs offered to do it. haha

Question for you and everyone: I am still waiting to hear back from USC… I got accepted into UCSC for Technology and Information Management and I am going to SIR… not sure if I want to settle for UCSC yet. What do you think, should I stay another year and apply to more colleges (I will have Calc 3/Linear/DE done so I can apply to UCB and east coast colleges) or go to UCSC if nothing works out?

My peer from last year told me that USC replied with an answer way past the final SIR dates for most universities. If I recall, he got his in July?
If not, do what you feel is best. If you have aspirations to other colleges and can afford to wait, one more year won’t affect you. It took me 5 years lol.

@BIMguy thank you! It looks like I will be, and every passing day I get more psyched to move to La Jolla and be a Triton. The rub is I didn’t get into the engineering school, and would have to choose between computational physics and mathematics/applied science as my backdoor into Jacobs. My last shot at at engineering for undergrad (in 2016 anyway) is UCI. Funny thing is though, as each day passes I realize that those two majors are actually a better fit for me, my life and future plans.

Anecdotally, I had that same internal discussion about waiting another year, taking more lower division classes and making myself a more competitive applicant for another crack at the piñata in the fall. The problem is, a lot can happen in a year. You never know how your personal life will change over the course of the coming months, and waiting obviously offers no guarantees for the future. That coupled with tuition hikes, application deadline extensions, crowded California Community Colleges full of well qualified applicants with stellar GPA’s, more international students fighting for limited space than the year before, etc, etc… you get the picture. My point is a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. Sometimes what is right in front of us is the best choice, even though it may be hard to see at the moment.

Congrats on the appeal. It sounds like you built a rock solid case as to why you are ready for UCI, and given yourself the best possible chance at getting that admissions offer.

Alright, waiting game officially starts. SIP (to accept/deny waitlist) deadline ended Sunday, so based on last year’s thread, some waitlisters were already getting admitted off waitlist early - before SIR deadline on June 1st (presumably due to students being accepted at their first choice colleges and turning down UCI well before SIR deadline). Keep your fingers crossed! =P

Today I received an e-mail from UC Merced
"Congratulations! Your academic record has qualified you for consideration for admission to UC Merced for fall 2016. The University of California is committed to providing transfer students in California an opportunity to earn a prestigious University of California degree. UC Merced’s tradition of excellence in education provides that opportunity for you to achieve your future goals.

The deadline to accept UC Merced’s offer is May 22, 2016"

I did not apply for UC Merced.
UCI waitlisted

@omarito Lol. That’s too funny! They must be short on their transfer quotas. Did they accept you under a certain major, or as undeclared?

I as well received the same notice. Pretty sure they send those out to those who were waitlisted as part of some UC transfer guarantee for ccc students.

I didn’t get anything from Merced =S. Of course, I already have offers from other UCs, but waitlisted at UCI =(.

@uisforutah Sorry for such a late reply, I was busy with finals and just finished (wooohoo a 4.0 in a relatively easy 20 units semester :D).

It is great that you are realizing this now, before you transfer. Did you already SIR to UCSD?

I think you present a solid argument, but you should personally not wait another year since you have been admitted to UCSD, in my opinion. Another issue with going to UCSC would be that I might have to stay there for three years because some courses might not transfer over and I will have to retake them, I will be talking to an advisor at UCSC soon. An incentive of the TIM major is that it is offered solely by UCSC’s school of engineering, which makes it a STEM major and holds a deeper value… that is at least what my counselor (he is pushing me to be okay with UCSC) has been saying these last few weeks. I already SIR’d but just can’t seem to make up my mind for it.

Thank you for the positive comments on the appeal. I don’t have any expectations from it but it would be ideal to get admitted to UCI. USC is also another alternative and my first option but as I said… not getting my hopes up!

@kamiture Sorry for such a late reply, I was busy with finals and just finished!

I got a notification from USC requesting my spring grades which is a positive because it means that they are considering my admission, I have a 4.0 this spring so I don’t know how it could me. I have been looking at threads from the past year and most of the people that got a Spring Grade Request were admitted which is nice but people often do not go back to let others know that they got rejected. I wish I knew already

Hey guys, I know we posted our stats in the official thread but would you guys mind sharing your stats again?

Major: Business Information Management
GPA: 3.70 (as of Fall 2016, will be 3.78 after Spring 2016)
Units Completed: 77
IGETC: Missing two classes
Tag: Yes
Prereqs for Major: Completed
ECs: Work in my field, internship at Intel in Summer of 2016
Appeal: Yes

I’m really surprised you got waitlisted. Is BIM that competitive? Here are my stats:
Major: Computer Science
GPA: 3.45
Units Completed: About 70
IGETC: Completed
Tag: no
Prereqs for Major: Missing some
ECs: Internship with NASA, as well as some smaller internships.

What is considered an appeal? did you guys send letters of recommendations? I know it’s past the appeal deadline or whatever, but I read on the UC website that appeals were not recommended for waitlisted students.

@Ecain17 it has a 15% acceptance rate but the reason he told me that I got waitlisted was because I was taking 4 classes in spring that were required for me to transfer. Which is kind of BS since they should honor the TAG unless I fail to meet the requirements. I’m just a little upset but it’s okay… Haha

Well thank you and good luck to you! How was the internship with NASA? That’s really cool.

@Eterion I filed my appeal because the counselor told me to… I wrote about my fulfilling my TAG requirements, improving my gpa, signed in-progress report by my profs saying I’m on pace to get an A, had 1 letter of rec by transfer director and 2 by my profs. I just thought that I had nothing to lose by appealing and at the time I was really upset about the decision. Haha

@BIMguy ahh okay - thanks much. Hopefully things go well for all of us =). Based on the Freshman waitlist, it looks like UCI started notifying them shortly after the May 1st SIR deadline for Freshman admits… June 1st is the SIR deadling for Transfers so hopefully we won’t wait too long!

@Eterion Yes I hope we hear back soon, what are your other options? I am going to hear back from USC after I submit my spring grades, which will also be in early to mid June.

I also wrote about my internship with Intel in my appeal letter! lol I was almost dead yesterday when I typed that.

@BIMguy Guy I really loved it and gained some good experience. It was in not-so-fun Central Florida (compared to SoCal anyway), but I’m glad I got the opportunity. It’s a little frustrating, because I applied last year to UCI for CE and got accepted, so I’m surprised I got waitlisted for CS when I’ve taken more classes, and had an internship.
