[] Volunteer/Community service: Maybe like 100 hours?
[] Summer Activities: I took a three week course at the University of Chicago last year?
[] Essays: I actually really liked these. The personal statement was about anthropology- how everyone thinks that since I’m a pretty quiet and introverted person, I must not like people, but then I talked about the different quirks and facets that set us apart, and how even though I grew up only one ethnicity I began to “borrow” these quirks from other people and incorporate them into myself, and in a world like that it’s impossible to not like people when they’ve given me so much. The experience essay was about losing 30 pounds, which I did the summer before junior year.

[]Income Bracket: 200k+
[] Strengths: SAT, SATII’s, Writing, College Classes, Ridiculous course load

[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted at UCSD and BU so far, rejected at Northwestern and MIT, waitlisted at UChicago
[] General Comments: Don’t do what I did… I messed up a single year and that kinda screwed up my other college chances. To make up for my subpar year I had to really push myself (9 tough classes first semester of my senior year just wasn’t fun…) but at the end I really felt that I had done everything I could do. There was no need to retake the SAT, for example, once I had a 2200 but I studied hard and pushed it higher. There was no need to take 9 classes but I was determined to, even if I was rejected, go out kicking and screaming, so to speak. I showed the adcoms I deserved a spot and they rewarded me. Still, it was notttttt fun. Good luck to everyone, it’s tough to get into UCLA. I’m hoping to get away from CA and go more east coast (Brown is my top choice at the moment) but UCLA is a nice safety to have up my sleeve.

Gender: Female
Income Bracket: $300k+
Strengths: My GPA, EC’s, and essays.
Weaknesses: My scores
Why you think you were accepted: I think the admissions officers could really get a sense of how enthusiastic and hard working I am. I made it very clear in my essay that I have never been spoiled and that I am independent and want to earn my place in life.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted: UCSD, UCI, UCSB, Cal Poly SLO, Santa Clara University, and Cal Lutheran. Rejected: UT Austin…oh, well.
General Comments: Still waiting on UPenn, Stanford, and Berkeley. I think I would still choose UCLA over those though!

[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: My SAT scores could have been better (especially the subject tests), and my weighted GPA was only a 4.08 because I moved a lot and didn’t get to take many APs before this year… :frowning:

[ *] SAT I (breakdown): 720 Math, 650 Writing (8 essay), 620 CR (Total = 1990)

[ *] SAT II: 700 Physics, 780 Math IIC
[ *] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
Weighted GPA: Think it’s 4.5 or more (I take the IB)
[ *] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): School does not rank
[ *] AP (place score in parenthesis): N/A
[ *] IB (place score in parenthesis): Taking finals in May, but my predicted are as follows

Physics HL = 7
Economics HL = 7
Geography HL = 7
Mathematics SL = 7
English SL = 6
Spanish SL = 6

[ *] Senior Year Course Load: Same as above
[ *] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): None
[ *] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):
Freestyle skiing - I do double flips and rotations on big jumps for those who don’t know what it is (placed top 10 nationally various times, and 1st regionally), also a quite solid golf player
Student Council (Vice president)
Model United Nations Participant
[ *] Job/Work Experience: Worked at Norway’s largest trampoline distributor as a “handyman” - I help with everything from sales to storage to demonstration of how the trampolines work
[ *] Volunteer/Community service: KRIK - A Christian sports activities organization (Supervisor and leader) - I am in charge of a club where 20 kids meet weekly to play different sports. I was also leader at one of the biggest national camps hosted by KRIK
Interact → fundraising club
Went to India with my class to work on community projects for a week
[ *] Summer Activities: Traveling, working, attending camps (as well as having leadership positions at the camps)
Attended the Pennsylvania School for Global Entrepreneurship (PSGE) at Lehigh University in the summer of 2013 (4 week program) - I was elected leader of my project group and was asked to be one of the 4 (out of 76) to hold a reflection speech at the end of the program
[ *] Essays: 6/10 - I am Norwegian, so not an excellent writer, and perhaps a bit mundane
[ *] Teacher Recommendation: 9/10 for both teachers who know me well, haven’t seen the recs, but my counselor said they were beyond great!
[ *] Counselor Rec: Awesome, she loves me
[ *] Additional Rec: From the PSGE admissions-person. Have no idea about this one, but think it was pretty ok as I connected well with her at the camp
[ *] Interview: None
[ *] State (if domestic applicant):

[ *] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): first generation college in the US, nationally competitive freestyle skier, determined and passionate about what I do
[ *] Strengths: IB grades, diverse and difficult course load, extracurriculars, freestyle skiing
[ *] Weaknesses: the SAT is my official nemesis, wish my english was better. SAT 2s weren’t particularly great either (but I can live with those). No special awards (but it is difficult to get those in Norway (very few competitions)
[ *] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Waitlisted because of low SATs and also I achieved low grades in my summer exams last year, compared to the exams in January 2014 (however, UCLA did not allow me to report these, which was very unfortunate). Also I don’t have any major awards, and I might just lack a few things that the school is looking for

Accepted: Middlebury College, UC Davis (with scolarship, 1/3 ride), UC San Diego and Pepperdine

[ /list][ b]Reflection**
[ *] Strengths: essays, UW GPA–this is a huge factor for UCLA. I think ~70% of applicants with an UW 4.0 were accepted to UCLA for the class of 2017.
[ *] Weaknesses: science section of ACT, lack of community service, no real hook.
[ *] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: my ACT was pretty solid (I mean, besides science), as well as my UW GPA and essays.
[ *] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: accepted: Michigan, Mizzou w/ honors
Waitlisted: Northwestern (Medill)
[ /list][ b]General Comments: Really excited to have been accepted! Right now my decision is between Michigan and UCLA. Also, quick question here: how easy is it to change majors once you get to UCLA? I would really prefer to do econ, biz econ, or communications (I believe this would be pre social sciences?).

Reflection

[ul]
[] Strengths: I think my essays probably helped because everything else was borderline
[] Weaknesses: SAT math was low for engineering, gpa could have been higher
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
Honestly, I’m pretty surprised I got in as I thought my lower SAT math score would hurt for engineering. I think my essays were unique and conveyed my interest in UCLA.
[li] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:Rejected: Cornell (ED)[/li]Accepted: Northeastern, RPI w/ 13k per year merit.
Waiting: UMich (deferred), Hopkins, Carnegie Mellon, UC Berkeley, Rochester, USC, Tufts[/ul]
Got a likely letter from Engineering a week ago, but I was pretty surprised considering my stats weren’t exceptional. Really happy that I was accepted, there’s a good chance I will be a bruin next year!:
