General Comments:
I’m really surprised that I was accepted to UCLA just due to the nature of what the college process is. With such a low acceptance rate, I was not expecting this! I’m super excited about UCLA, but I am waiting to hear from a couple other reaches next week and that will make my final decision then! Congratulations to everyone who was accepted and to everyone who was not don’t worry! I was denied from my–originally thought–dream school and it’s turning out for the best for me!

Reflection
[] Strengths:full ib, extracurriculars, good essay, summer program at Penn, my ability to show them who i am in the essays.
[] Weaknesses:sat score definitely, my IB predicted could have been better. Being an international student, and being chinese.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected:Since grade 11, UCLA has been my goal, and guided me to become better in my endeavours. I guess that the admissions people saw beyond my not so perfect sat scores, and really looked at the whole package. I was quite scared about UCLA’s results, because my sat math was so low and devastating for me, a student whose peers all have 800s on their sat math section. To students who are reading this-- never feel defeated, never lose confidence in yourself. I believed that i can attend my dream school, and I will :).

    - Personal Statement #1: I wrote about growing up in the back of nail salon that was located in a bad neighborhood, and how that caused my young, innocent self to realize the evils of the world earlier than most children. I also mentioned being an Asian kid, of immigrant parents who speak broken English, growing up in the Deep South and on the East Coast. I played a lot on my identity as an Asian versus an Asian American.
    - Personal Statement #2: I wrote about taking care of my young brother while my parents work 24/7. I emphasized on playing the parent role and how I taught my brother various things that all kids learn from their parents ranging from riding a bike to being potty-trained. Also, I said that my younger brother has also become my own model, teaching me how to dream and to never completely grow up.

Reflection

  • [li] Strengths: GPA, Extracurriculars, Personal Statements[/li][li] Weaknesses: Test Scores, Community Service[/li][li] Why you think you were accepted?[/li]I think I was accepted because of my personal statements and GPA. My personal statements were just that, personal. In fact, I bawled my eyes out when I was writing my second one about my younger brother. I felt like I was relieving a huge weight on my shoulders, being able to be honest and to tell my life’s story. As far as my GPA goes, I think it being a perfect 4.0, it compliments well with my class rigor when you consider that my school only offers 10 AP classes and 19 Honors classes. My extracurriculars are honestly all over the place, but they do show a lot of innovation. Instead of seizing opportunities, I created opportunities for myself, as well as for others. I spent a lot of time trying my best to make a change at my school, and I believe that it’s another form of leadership in itself.

General Comments:
I honestly don’t know what to say. A lot of people had their doubts about me being accepted into UCLA, and I did too. So… Being accepted into a great school such as UCLA has been an honor, but my number one choice is UC Berkeley. But for those high school students that are planning on applying to UCLA and are worried, especially about your test scores, don’t. Your test scores do not define who you are, but it’s what you do and decide to do that makes you who you are. If you don’t like something that you’re doing then improve yourself and get better. Not to mention, I’m an out-of-state applicant too, so it’s supposed to be more difficult for me, but I did it anyways! Also, my personal statements were planned two to three weeks ahead of time, so that’s very important. And if anything, take this advice that I didn’t follow, never lose sight of a dream and have hope! FIAT LUX!

[*] Why you think you were accepted/wait listed/denied: i guess i got pretty lucky, it pisses me off that people like @jwen556 who are clearly qualified get rejected while some (much) less qualified get accepted. engineering is getting way too competitive (CSE had a 13.9% acceptance rate last year, and I’m sure that it must have dropped to ~12% this year), and its ridiculous how many qualified applicants are getting rejected. Although I got rejected from CS/CSE/EECS at every college better than UCLA, UCLA is by itself pretty awesome, so I guess Ima be a bruin soon!

^^^ Ya, not buying that one.

@silas6070‌ you said in previous posts that you were also applying to riverside… being a hispanic male with excellent academics and substantial community involvement, how exactly could you have been rejected from even Riverside (it would seem as if you would be more qualified than many of the white and asian applicants that get in to even UCB/UCLA)

And first generation to college…lol. That bio would run all the Ivies like Kwasi

silas6070 should have been Regents at most UC’s with those stats. Maybe he did not meet some UC requirement.

General Comments: Attending UCLA due to distance, weather and full ride! Very hard decision between UCLA and UPenn but I ultimately chose uhk-lah.

CADREAMIN: I didn’t apply top any private universities due to the tuition and other prices.
OutOfBoundsError: I wasn’t accepted to Berkeley, LA, San Diego, Irvine, Santa Barbara, Davis, and Riverside because not only is my major very impacted at the UCs, but something I noticed about the kids from my school that got into Berkeley and LA and other UCs was they played sports whereas I quit all the sports I used to engage in so that I could focus on academics and clubs. Therefore I want competitive enough
