“Both Area Studies must be non-contiguous to the major and to each other.”

Math and Engineering are considered contiguous (in the same general field of study). Your Area Studies would need to come from Art/Humanities and Social Science.

Obviously it’s not optimal, but if you do not pass Math 109 this quarter, you could email the Math 142A instructor for Fall (who is still to be determined…). The instructor of the course can allow you to enroll concurrently - they can waive prerequisites if they wish.

Let me repeat that this is not optimal - the prerequisites are in place because their completion is, in our experience, one of the best indicators of success in a course. However, the instructor is the final arbiter of who is allowed in their class.

Once an instructor shows up there for Math 142A in Fall - email them. If they approve of your concurrent enrollment in Math 109, forward that (with your PID) to mathadvising@math.ucsd.edu and we can waive your prerequisite.

Are there undergraduate math TA’s, and if so, how does one apply?

I have heard rumors that you can’t double major in math and econ because of the math and econ joint major. Is this true? I am currently an Applied Math major and wanted to declare management science as my 2nd major next quarter.

We usually have a handful of positions available for undergraduate TAs in any given quarter (usually more in the Fall, and fewer in Winter/Spring). Undergraduate students can TA one section in Math 3C, 4C, 10A-B-C or 11. Send an email to mathadvising@math.ucsd.edu and we can send you the application (or you can come by our office at APM 7018). Basic qualifications are - 3.00 overall GPA (3.40 to be competitive); high grades in all math courses (B’s at minimum, A’s to be competitive); Junior or Senior standing w/ 3 quarters UC attendance; completion of Math 109 and one of 100A/103A/140A/142A.

You can double major in Math and Econ, just not with one of your majors being the joint math-econ major. A double major in Applied Math and Economics (or Management Science) is certainly possible. The main thing to keep in mind is the duplication of credit restrictions between some of our courses, particularly between Econometrics (Econ 120AB) and Probability/Stats (Math 180A-181A).

It would certainly be possible to double major in Math-Applied Science and an engineering field. Lower division requirements (ie Math 20A-F) can overlap to any extent in a double major. For upper-division, you must have at least 10 courses unique to each major - anything beyond that could overlap. Since the Math-Applied Science major requires 14 upper division courses, you would be able to have a maximum of 4 UD courses overlap.

That’s actually incorrect, the restriction (correctly identified by gswhoops) is only against double majors entirely within the Jacobs School itself (so no ECE-CS double major, no MAE-SE double major). The policy can be found here: [url=http://www.ucsd.edu/catalog/curric/SOE.html]Jacobs School of Engineering/url where is states: “It is the policy of the UC San Diego Academic Senate not to approve double majors within engineering.” (emphasis mine). You can also find it laid out in the Academic Senate policy linked above.

I’m glad I could clarify the error (which is part of the reason the department started this ‘official’ thread - we see a lot of incorrect information being relayed).

Yes, you could certainly double-major in Math and Computer Science - the only caveat is that the Math major could not be MA30 (Math-Computer Science), since that would entail too many overlapping requirements.

Looking at both this summer’s and last summer’s schedule, I see that the 142A/142B sequence is being offered both summers. Is it safe to assume that the math dept will be offering 142A/142B (or 140A/140B) over the summer next year, Summer 2012?

Also, what happened to 193A/B? When I sat down to make my 2yr plan with an advisor in the Fall (I’m a transfer student), he had put down 193A/B for Winter 2012/Spring 2012, but I don’t see it under the planned course offerings for 2011-2012 school year. I was really looking forward to these classes too :(

Considering recent budget cuts, I don’t think it’s necessarily “safe” to assume they’ll be offered next summer, but seeing as they haven’t been cut this year (easily one of the most drastic year-to-year changes in class offerings), I think you’d be fine.
