zebes

Wow, very impressive stats zebes. Have you applied to more prestigious schools? Why have you decided on UF?

Proximity to home. :) She wants to study engineering, and she decided that MIT was too far away. She did get into GaTech, but she really doesn't want to go that far where she doesn't know a soul. She likes the idea of being able to drive home on a weekend. And, her dad has a Ph.D. in engineering, and he's counseling do her master's or Ph.D. farther away if she wants. UF has an excellent engineering school. So, a perfect fit ... which is the objective, right?

zebes

I don't know what the committe actually does, but they did say race,...etc do not play a role in the process, that is discrimination. however, due to different circumstances with a variety of students..then yes some with lower stats will get in while other with higher stats that probably did not have too many obstacles in their life may get denied or even pushed to spring term. this is just from what i have observed and friends got admitted last year with lower stats than uf 2008 class.

Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.97

AP (place score in parenthesis): AP Physics B (5). AP Microeconomics (5). AP Macroeconomics (5). AP Calculus AB (5). AP English Language (5). AP United States History (5).

IB (place score in parenthesis): School doesn't offer IB.

Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Craighill Burks Award for Excellence in American History (given to top AP US History student), University of Pennsylvania Alumni Book Award, AP Scholar with Distinction, National Merit Semi-Finalist, member of Mu Alpha Theta, NHS, and the like, and several musical/athletic awards that I don't care to list.

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): 1. Classical and jazz piano for 12 years- I take lessons with a prominent professor at a renowned music school, have given several solo piano recitals, have played jazz piano with school band since freshman year. 2. Classical and jazz trumpet for 7 years- 1st Trumpet in several regional honor bands, as well as principal trumpet in school symphonic band, lead trumpet in school jazz band. 3. Number two member of Academic Team (Quizbowl)- have placed highly last two years at NAQT Nationals, and won state championship last two years as well. 4. Member of Varsity Basketball Team for four years, though not huge contributor. 5. Geography Team member- won county contest each year I competed.

Job/Work Experience: 1. Piano Accompanist for people at my school performing instrumental solos for Solo/Ensemble Festival. 2. Junior Counselor at my school's summer camp two years ago. 3. Paid piano performer for several local churches around my city.
Volunteer/Community service: This is, I think, what helped to push my application over the edge, in terms of leadership. 1. I founded and became the chairman of a Music Department at a branch of the Breakthrough Collaborative, an organization designed to put disadvantaged students in college prep schools and 4-year colleges, and recruited musically inclined friends and other young musicans to teach private lessons over the summer. 2. I'm President of a school club called "Rock 4 Relief" that holds benefit rock concerts with performers from school, (raised over 3,000 dollars from the last one) and (3.) I organize a concert every year for elderly nursing homes around my area, called the "Chocolate Covered Strawberry Tour." 4. I also built homes over the last two summers for victims of Hurricane Katrina with the varsity basketball team.

Summer Activities: See above.

Essays: Essay was about music's effect on my life- pretty good, compactly written essay.

State (if domestic applicant): Florida

Country (if international applicant): USA

School Type: Private

Ethnicity: Caucasian/White

Gender: Male

Income Bracket: 80,000

Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): I'm a guy- suppose that gives me an advantage, but no legacy, no first generation, no ethnicity, not geographically diverse, not a recruited athlete or anything like that.

Reflection:

Strengths: I have a lot of energy to excel academically, musically, athletically, and also take on many leadership roles around my community and my school. I spent a lot of time on my essays, filling out my application meticulously, and just making sure my application would be competitive.

Weaknesses: Wasn't much I could do else- I guess get more nationally recognized awards in piano and music?

Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: My nonstop energy that I put into all my pursuits, the hard work I spent to prepare the application, my essays, my accomplishments.

General Comments: Good Luck!!

SAT: M 770, V 700 W 660
GPA 3.5 UW, 4.23 (appx - didn't calculate) W

Essay - OK to good (mom's opinion)
EC's average for the program he's in - hasn't cured cancer or anything, but involved in sports, clubs, honor societies and academic competition teams.
