Official UIUC Class of 2018 Decisions Thread - Release 12/13

@bonee26

Are you sure? That’s a 7.4% acceptance rate. It seems extremely low when UIUC’s acceptance rate is closer to 60%

I got waitlisted for CS in COE. Did he mention anything about waitlisted CS students?

DO you know where I could find more information?

thanks.

This is the information he gave, his last name was Pitt maybe you can get a contact through the directory. I found that the acceptance rate is very deceiving at UIUC because each candidate gets accepted/denied into a specific engineering discipline. UIUC then accepts many candidates to their second and third choices which in turn inflates the acceptance rate. Professor Pitt did not mention waitlisted students.But I can tell you that about 95% of the 400 or so accepted students there are still undecided. In the morning session they made the students stand they asked who has committed to UIUC and only a handful remained standing. We are from NY, 2 students and my son from our HS were accepted to CS at UIUC and the other 2 definitely are not attending. Also, I met 2 other students at UMich at a students day on 2/15 that were accepted to CS at UIUC and were not planning on seeing the school. You may have a shot good luck.

@bonee26
That’s great news, I also got confirmation from admissions that waitlisted applicants are only considered for their first choice majors.
By the way you said 400 admitted, in the last post you said 200 admitted. Is 200 admitted the CS students and 400 students the total engineering students?
It sounds like yield for CS will be quite low. I have looked for statistics on previous yield rates/total applicants but I can’t find any. Do you have any idea of the numbers from previous years?

Thank you for all the information.

The 400 were all accepted students all majors attending the session ( bad weather). The 200 were specifically CS admittances and there were approx 25 there on 2/17

does anyone know when oos scholarships will come out???

@bonee26

Thanks vm for sharing your experience at ASD.

That 7.4% seems very low. They must have gotten A LOT of quality Comp Sci apps in the Priority Filing Period to only need to accept 200 during the regular round.

Did Lenny mention how many students had already been accepted early? …or anything about expected yield?

Unofficially the word is that it’s becoming nearly impossible to transfer in and that they are even having problems finding classroom space for ‘minors’ due to underestimating yield over the last couple of years. Maybe this year they are under-accepting to make sure they don’t over-enroll.

Thanks again for the color…

Here is a link to the stats for the Fall 2013 freshman class :
http://www.dmi.illinois.edu/stuenr/abstracts/fa13Freshman_ten.htm</a></p>

7331 freshman enrolled across all academic colleges (with 1609 freshman enrolled in ENG). About 10% of the freshman class came from China. In terms of overall admissions for the freshman class, it looks like there is an effort to enroll a least one student from every US state and also every county in IL.

Just about any info desired (expect Fall 2014 application stats) at this Campus Profile link :
<a href=“2022-2023 Campus Profile - Campus Total”>http://www.dmi.illinois.edu/cp/</a></p>

Choose “Engineering” in the “Major Unit” pulldown and then a specific “Department”.

For “Computer Science” in “Engineering”, Field “3600” has the start of the Student data. It shows 99 freshman enrolled in Fall 2013 and 397 seniors. There were 177 freshman enrolled in Fall 2012, so either the class was cut back or the ratio of enrolled students that were admitted was below expectations. Another interesting tidbit is the percentage of international students in CS-ENG has be steadily rising from 26% in 2004 to 41% in 2013.

Remember this article from the Chicago Tribune concerning the Fall 2013 freshman class?
“Illinois’ share of students at U. of I. continues to decline”

The percentage of in-state freshmen at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign this fall has dropped to a new low, with about 73 percent coming from Illinois compared to 90 percent less than a decade ago.

<a href=“Illinois' share of students at U. of I. continues to decline”>Illinois' share of students at U. of I. continues to decline;

I hope UIUC releases complete statistics of this year’s engineering admissions. In my opinion it was highly competitive this year and would really like to see the acceptance rate for different branches.

Lenny did not discuss how many have accepted admission to CS. He did give a very compelling presentation including stats regarding job placement after graduation. My son was going through the motions in visiting UIUC but left with UIUC as a front runner. An accepted engineering physics candidate asked about transferring into CS when we were leaving the presentation and Lenny seemed to be dancing around a not likely scenario.

Decision: Accepted (Computer Science)

Objective:[ul]

[li] SAT I (breakdown): Did not send[/li][li] SAT II: 730 US History, 770 Physics, 780 Math II (I forgot if I sent them these, but another user posted them so I assume I probably did)[/li][li] ACT: 34 (34 E 36 R 34 M 32 S)[/li][li] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0[/li][li] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 17/423[/li][li] Senior Year Course Load: AP US Gov, AP Literature, AP Physics C, AP Calculus BC, IB Math HL, AP Computer Science[/li][li] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): NCTE Writing, Moody’s Math Contestant, NLE winner for 9th, 10th and 11th grade. Nothing huge like Intel.[/li][/ul]Subjective: [ul]

[li] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Math Club (12th), Mock Trial (12th), Environmental Club (11th & 12th), Chamber and Symphony Orchestra (8th - 12th), Philosophy Club (8th - 12th), Science Olympiad (12th), Service Honor Society (9th & 10th). <— I don’t think I included this, forgot about it. I don’t remember much, since I made the application like a day after Nov. 1.[/li][li] Job/Work Experience: None.[/li][li] Volunteer/Community service: Tutoring.[/li][li] Summer Activities: There wasn’t a place for this and I didn’t really do anything noteworthy.[/li][li] Essays: Probably one of the strongest parts about my application. The first was good and the second I’m pretty sure was amazing. One of them related to my major and how I found passion for it, the other reflected my character and how I handle things like ambition, motivation and confidence.[/li][/ul]Other:[ul]
[li] State (if domestic applicant): NY[/li][li] Country (if international applicant): US[/li][li] Ethnicity: South-Asian (Bangladesh)[/li][li] Gender: Male[/li][li] Income Bracket: They had no knowledge of this until after decisions anyways.[/li][li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Nope. None.[/li][/ul]Reflection[ul]
[li] Strengths: ACT score was good, essays were great. My essays gave my application a personal touch. My GPA could have been higher but I had a sloppy first two years, but this could have been a good thing because I was an obviously upward trending kid – you could tell with one look at my transcript.[/li][li] Weaknesses: GPA could have been better. Extracurriculars didn’t have much to do with my major. No awards. Possibly my ethnicity? [/li][li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Essays definitely helped I think, but in the end I think it was because I met the required numbers.[/li][li] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Only heard back from Stony Brook U, accepted there too.[/ul][/li]General Comments: For those wait-listed/deferred: Lots of kids who get accepted don’t commit, so I think for Illinois, the percentage of deferred students who get in is higher than normal. Other than that, it is what it is, and you’re all smart people who’ll figure it all out – five years from now you probably won’t ever care.

Other than that, I’m happy with my acceptance and I am waiting to hear about aid, scholarships and other financial stuff. Speaking of that, does anyone know if you have to do anything besides FAFSA? I got the check mark for the financial stuff on the checklist so…

I post for my son. Applied to computer science and accepted to alternative major in LAS.

SAT. 2200. Math 760,CR 740. WR 700
SAT2 Math2 800 Physics 780
GPA 3.8UW

AP class 9 up to end of senior
OOS, some science contest finalist.

Other schools: rejected on Cornell ED , accepted on Suny Stony Brook, Purdue, Rutgers, Pendding: NYU, Georgia Tech

We thought we may have good chance to be admitted in UIUC CS. But too many more qualified in the applicant pool.

We should had put engineering as alternative major since we now think it is too difficult to transfer from LAS to CS after enroll. It is too late now.

Congra to all that have been accepted.

So do you guys think getting waitlisted for CS in COE is better than being admitted into an alternate program or DGS?

I confirmed that waitlisted applicants are only considered for their first choice majors, does that mean a waitlisted applicant for CS is more competitive than a CS applicant who got accepted into an alternate program?
Or are we less competitive because the chances of the waitlist being used are almost zero?

Just wondering

@Posterguy

I am no expert on this waitlisted question. Sorry.

I only know if we put alternative major within COE and accepted, we should have better chance to transfer to CS after freshman year since it is within same college. Not like transfer from LAS another college.

IL2014

Thanks for the links! lots of data but not necessarily very useful in terms of figuring out acceptance and yield by major. Clearly there are a lot of new students entering with sophomore status, which means we can’t even glean the exact number of admits from the data. I think the most interesting data would be a complete rundown of apps and acceptance by major, which I don’t think they publicly release. Thanks though, appreciate the links.

YZamyatin,

It would appear the Campus Profile database has all the relevant information stored to get those statistics, but the queries are not provided from the DMI public interface.

UIUC, though, is a public institution of the state of Illinois and is subject to the IL Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).
http://www.foia.uillinois.edu/</a></p>

There is a FOIA log with all past requests, but not many asking for more detailed admissions info.

The institution must provide public documents that already exist and does not need to create new documents to fulfill a request, but I am not sure what the response would be to run a specific query on an existing database.

I am curious, but I am not THAT curious. :)

I can figure out enrolled students by major simply by comparing total students from year to year and adjusting for graduates and transfers. But what would be more interesting is total number of applications by major, as well as acceptances (or yield). I will see if I can get a response from DMI. If Lenny shares the data at info sessions it can’t be that big of a secret.

I do wonder though, why not share this info in the first place? I mean, it’s great that they are archiving how many undergrads come from which zip codes, counties, and states (and what their ethnic codes are and what their tuition ranges are and what year they were born and other ‘who would ever need to know this?’ data), and I realize that the purpose isn’t to satiate the curiosity of prospective students, but it doesn’t seem like it would take much effort to add the few things that would actually be extremely useful for applicants.

“I can figure out [new] enrolled students by major simply by…”

Actually, I can’t do this, as it assumes no one transfers out of the major.

Decision: Accepted (Computer Science in Engineering)

ACT: 32
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.95
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 13 out of 500 something
Senior Year Course Load: 5 APs (including AP Computer Science), Honors Orchestra, Special Education Assistant

Extracurriculars: Orchestra, Pit Orchestra, Orchestra Board Secretary and Website Manager, Jr. Village Board Member, Student Ambassador, Math Team, NHS, Math Honors Society, Pre-Calculus and Orchestra Tutor
Job/Work Experience: 18 hrs/week at retail store since 2012
Volunteer/Community service: Special Education Assistant, Library Summer Volunteer, Hospital Volunteer, Historical Society Volunteer
Summer Activities: Took a bunch of classes over the past 3 summers (speech, econ, ballet, electricity, gov, consumer management) and went to a camp at UIUC, volunteered, worked
Essays: Talked about the lessons you can learn from retail and about a camp I attended at UIUC that made me want to major in CS

In-State, White, Female
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Girl in CS and the engineering camp there definitely helped. I also know java and vb but that probably didn’t help much.

General Comments: An email stated that there were nearly 2300 CS applicants for 175 spots in the freshman class. Got an engineering freshman scholarship.

I’m really happy and UIUC is one of my top choices. Congrats to everyone and good luck!! :slight_smile:

Anyone know if OOS scholarships have been sent out???
