Official UIUC Class of 2018 Decisions Thread - Release 12/13

Antonove-- you mean to say that if your major is there you have been accepted/rejected? Sorry, a little confused by your message!

I believe it’s the other way around. If the box with your major is gone or empty, it means that you have been either accepted/rejected. If the box remains intact, then you have been deferred. Again, I’m not sure if this is true or not as it’s just what I’ve read on other forums.

@Antonove
What do you mean by “the box with your major”? My selected major only shows in the “Applicant Information” box.

^ LOL. If that happens after the decisions are uploaded, one can always check the decision directly instead of rely on this secondary sign.

^ Sorry, I meant to say after they upload the decisions into the system but don’t make them visible until Friday at 4 pm CST.

shirleyxxy

I believe it is that box. I haven’t seen what it disappearing actually looks like, just relying on what others have said.

Wow! So I am either accepted or rejected? I am more nervous now!

Who still has the box on their page? I still do, does this definitely mean I’m deferred??? I’m just trying to take an informal survey because if most of us still have the box, it likely doesn’t mean anything.

I still have the box in my application page.

Same. Box still here.

We can suffer in our deferment agony together ;)

Ahahahaha so much for all the waiting. priority admission more like priority rejection heh

So according to the thread Karimcheese posted, you would have DGS in place of your major if you didn’t get accepted?

Guys, I totally understand your concerns, and this speculation happens every year. The application status page is generated by a program. That program displays data from your application’s internal processing by admissions. When decisions are being loaded into the system in preparation for display on the decision date, the program masks (just stops displaying the decision data using a simple date test:

If today’s date/time >= mask time start and <= mask time end (the time that decisions appear)
then
mask decision;
else
display decision;
end if;

The reason decisions are masked is because they need to enter the database through, I assume, a variety of methods (programmatic and manual). It’s not perfect obviously, due to applicants being able to see that they’re being considered for alternate programs, and this alternate consideration occurs for different applicants over a certain period.

This can, of course, change from year-to-year as the programmers are asked to modify the program code. So, for those who noted a different program appearing on their app status page, it would be great if you could report back and let us know whether you were ultimately accepted in the alternate, deferred, or sadly, denied.

Please note that a deferral may just mean that the program is so popular that they have decided to take a look at the full body of applications before making decisions on the limited number of seats that they have. If you’re denied, please don’t take it personally. The programs attract top applicants from all over the world, and because of the amount of applications they receive, there has to be a certain amount of numbers-sifting based on cursed standardized test scores and GPA mainly. This allows them to get to a more manageable group of applications to which they can really do a more holistic review on, meaning looking at your course rigor, your essays, your class rank (if available), your ECs, your school profile and the success of other grads who were previously accepted at UIUC.

It’s brutal to have to go through this process. I’ve done it three times now with my children, and all three of them will be in college next fall (So can anyone spare a dime? Just kidding.). UIUC is a great school. Top 10 for many of its programs. You may be disappointed with the results now, but better now then after you matriculate, if not ready.

Once you’re here, they do everything in their power to help you to help yourself to succeed. Their success depends on your success. But remember this: College Freshman Year is NOT the 5th year of high school, no one will force your to apply yourself, and manage your time. Everyone who is admitted to UIUC has been very successful in high school. The law of averages mean that half will be below average in terms of GPA. You’ve got plenty of time on your hands, and a lot of possibilities to be distracted. First, learn to tread water. Then, branch out and take full advantage of the opportunities that are available to you at one of the world’s premiere universities. If you need help, there are your professor’s office hours, your TA’s office hours, peer study, the library, computer labs, your advisor etc. All are available, if you seek them out. If you don’t and you are successful, great. If you don’t seek them out, and you need to, or if you allow yourself to be distracted, unmotivated, etc, well, then your classmates will appreciate the grade curve. Good luck. I hope this helps a bit to alleviate your concerns.

Okay, I apologize if I come off as arrogant but I am just extremely skeptical and confused about this… I am having a difficulty believing that I was deferred considering the box did not disappear. I have a 4.0 and 34 act, as well as a variety of extracurriculars and have taken 8 ap courses. Am i honestly getting deferred?

I honestly think this is just speculation. I doubt UIUC would allow this kind of indication before admissions decisions are released. just my thoughts on the matter :)

@cengel1996 - First, you’ll know for sure on Friday. Second, depending on the program to which you are applying, some defer regardless of your stats. Business, for example, does a full app review. If it were just numbers, then you’d hit the submit button on your app, and you’d receive a response then and there. You’ll likely get an offer. Those are great stats. Be patient.

Has anyone’s box even disappeared?

I still have the box, also.

Im so confused. What box is everyone talking about?
