Ok so I just got accepted to Purdue for engineering (chemical) and Purdue is my #2 school. UIUC is my number 1 and considering since I got accepted into Purdue for engineering, I have high hopes for UIUC. Guys, please chance me!! Ill chance back

High school is one of the nation’s top schools.

No class rank, but I’m in the top 10% ( I could have been in the top 5%, but since I took extra classes (zero hour) which were not AP or honors, it brought my GPA down).

All AP and Honors (Senior Year: AP English, AP Chemistry, AP Calculus BC, Honors Spanish 4, AP Computer Science, Strength)

Outsanding ECs: Cross country for 3 years, wrestling for 2 years, track for 2 years, Gymnastics for 2 years, 1 year of male cheerleading, I practice and compete Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Judo outside of school, I power lift, I am part of WYSE, National Honors Society, Spanish National Honors Society, Pep Club, Varsity Club, Senior Class Council, Theater, Mathletes, Mu Alpha Theta

My essays are exceptionally outstanding.

GPA: Unweighted: 3.85 Weighted: 4.54

ACT(I hate my score…)
Highest English: 32
Highest Math: 31
Highest Reading: 29
Highest Science: 28
Highest Composite: 28

Other stuff: I live in Illinois, I’m asian, none of my relatives went to UIUC, I applied priority

I think you have more than 50% chance of being accepted. ACT maybe holding you back.

me too @‌mtjade
but I loved it when I visited campus so I’m excited!
Hopefully I get in!

UIUC doesn’t superscore. The only see your highest composite set of scores for admissions purposes. Your GPA is fine. The Chemical Engineering program at UIUC attracts many top students with many prepping for Medical School. You’ll have a lot of competition for the seats available. Given your 28 Composite, and in spite of your high GPA, I’d have to rank you as a slight reach to a reach for the program. As I always add, pick a second program. Get good grades, apply for a transfer, and show them they were wrong, if you don’t get in on your initial attempt.

Good luck.

Are you sure, they don’t? On the site it is given that they see the highest sections of the SAT or ACT.

Technically they do not super score. However, unlike with SAT Subject tests and recommendation letters which are not looked at whatsoever, AOs can and do look at sub scores from multiple sittings of the ACT and SAT Reasoning tests.

The way it was explained to me is that while the highest single sitting is highlighted on your app, they do ‘eyeball’ your section scores. So if you are applying to the COE, they will definitely scan all your scores to look at your Math section results.

I call it pseudo-super-scoring. I have no idea how much weight they might attach to a high sub-score that is not part of the highest composite. It seems like it would just be easier to say ‘we super-score’, but they refuse to do so.

Hahaha yeah! @YZamyatin‌

@Balthezar‌ They don’t superscore, but they do look at the highest score from each category. Superscoring would be taking the highest score from each category and creating a new composite.

we get our decisions in February ! Are you guys excited?

is it only for the ones that did priority?

I’m pretty sure that everyone gets their decisions on the same day: February 13th. From what I understand, the priority deadline is only for consideration for the honors college.

Everyone hears on the same day, February 13th.

Maybe the application will actually close before then?! Holy cow, it is still open!!

@ilovemycat‌
I am a parent of an applicant and I am more irked that he has to wait so long than anything else. I would like him to not spend all Christmas break writing essays and finishing apps! But since he has to wait so long for a definitive answer from Illinois, and even though he expects to get in to his 1st choice major, he has had to add many schools to his list just in case :(

@bagelboy1996

That is not my understanding, and would be a change from past practices. And frankly, there is no appreciable difference between “looking at the highest subscore in each category”, and superscoring. They can add. Can you provide a cite for that information? I’d appreciate it. My understanding is that the admissions committee only sees your highest single composite set of scores for admissions purposes. Within that single set of scores some colleges look at subscores. For example, for engineering, a slightly lower composite may be offset by a high math subscore.

In addition, post-admission, the registrar will provide credit for RHET 105 for a high enough English subscore:

<a href=“2009 Cutoff Scores Rhetoric”>http://cte.illinois.edu/testing/pnp/cutoffs/cutoff09/rhet09.html</a></p>

Agree that there is no appreciable difference; basically just semantics (see my pseudo-super-scoring comment above).

It’s true though. I’ll post an online source later when not on my phone, but I know this directly from admissions (face to face at a visit).

@balthezar @YZamyatin‌ Here is the language about the ACT subscore review, along with the web link.

Performance on standardized tests.
Illinois does not have any minimum scores or “cutoffs” for making any undergraduate admissions decisions. Readers evaluate the results of the required ACT and/or SAT test results. The highest composite score is used for evaluation. Colleges will often evaluate results from the sub-scores (English, Math, etc.). If an applicant submits scores from more than one test date, the highest sub-score(s) will be used in this evaluation. However, Illinois does not combine the highest sub-scores from different test sittings to create a “super-score” composite.

<a href=“Page Not Found, Illinois Undergraduate Admissions”>http://admissions.illinois.edu/apply/requirements_freshman.html</a></p>

Thanks Tonypa. I think that’s where the confusion is coming from. The question then is when does the college evaluation occur? If the initial process only looks at the highest composite set of scores, is that first pass by the admissions committee sent to certain colleges for their input? In boarderline instances are the highest composites requested across all tests provided to make a final admit/deny decision?

Maybe Drusba can clear that up a bit?

That is a good theory, and would explain why they don’t want to say they super-score. They don’t really drill down to the sub scores except in borderline cases

@YZamyatin @Balthezar I emailed my admissions counselor regarding my concern of the topic and he answered, replying that they do not superscore as, and I paraphrase, that it’s basically useless. He said all scores are ‘observed’ though - not mentioning the world ‘highest’ anywhere.
