General Comments:
I think lack of extra curricular activities hurt as well as a C+ my sophomore year. Also, writing scores pulled down my overall test scores.
@CSmajorQ Your stats were better than mine, but somehow I was accepted. UIUC weighs your essays pretty heavily. Could that, along with only a few EC, have made it harder for you to get into the college of Engineering?
@LeeEnfield, UIUC accepts by major. Last year, CS in Engineering was rejecting applicants who were more qualified than the average admit to some other majors in Engineering. I imagine this year was the same. Also, if you looked at the results thread last year, almost all applicants who got in to CS in Engineering were already coding for money (hired as programmers or developing mobile apps) or placed highly in some coding competition or were female or were URM. Sometimes some combination of the above. There were a handful who got in to CS in Engineering who didn’t fit in to any of the above categories. They had something like a 36 ACT.
@LeeEnfield, I’m sure there are many things they take into consideration. I could ponder all day the reasons why, but not knowing exactly what they were looking for in terms of scores, cultural and geographic diversity, essays and extra curriculars, it would only be speculation. Of course it always stings to be rejected, but I have a couple of great alternate options and I’m sure things will work out for me.
Let’s do this m8s.
Accepted - Chemical Engineering - LAS

Gender: Female
Income Bracket: lol too high to qualify for anything
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Female in engineering? Dad went to grad school at Illinois.
Reflection:
Strengths: I think I was just ok. Sort of surprised I got accepted with honors and scholarships. The honors is probably because Chem E is in LAS (god bless).
Weaknesses: Everything was just ok. Nothing particularly special.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Hooks probably.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Accepted to Twin Cities, UofArizona, Ann-Arbor, San Jose State (lol), Cal State East Bay (lol), West Virginia Tech (lol)
General Comments:
I’m really happy with how my decision turned out! Hope everyone is happy with theirs
Hope for future applicants who don’t have amazing stats:
Accepted General Studies
ACT: 29
GPA UW 3.2 W 4.06
Pretty normal extra cirriculars: over 100 volunteer hours, some work experience, 2 clubs
Essays: I think my essays were OK. I wrote a personal one that was definitely stronger. Even though I proofread my essays 1000 times, I noticed a slight mistake in one after I applied. It didn’t hurt me in the end.
hooks: I think my hook is that I go to a competitive high school, also upward trend in grades and all honors/AP classes

Being in state helped a lot, but these personal essays are what really matter. The admissions officers really want to see who you are on a piece of paper.
Also, I am an LAS James Scholar
I think I should post this just to help out those in the future looking for this as a reference. These helped me quite a bit to calm my nerves way back when I was applying and waiting for my decisions

Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Science fair “Outstanding Engineering project award”
**Subjective: **
Extracurriculars: (I’m just going to clump them together as I’ve already typed them up for a ‘chance me thread’ a while back.
- Built a farnsworth nuclear fusion reactor with a friend as a summer project, entered the regional science fair and won an “Outstanding engineering project” award in my age (senior) category. Sugarcoated this as the “project leader/co-founder” when entering my ECs.
- Co-created (with my brother) two iPhone/android applications and published it on the iPhone appstore and the Google Play store.
- Founder/leader of the school’s App/programming club. Club has been running since September after the launch of our second app (which explains the delay).
- Violin learner for >7 years, passed the music theory and level 8 violin examinations
- Golf player (no sports teams or varsity, recreational) for >5 years
- Symphony orchestra second/third violinist
- Did a research project at a university and wrote an essay on it in chemistry for my IB Diploma program, had a great experience and wrote about it in my essays.
-
100 volunteer hours.
- Volunteered with my city with over 50 documented hours within, initiated several citywide events with them and is currently on the steering committee of a major city event.
Essays (rating 1-10, details):
First choice major essay: (nuc. engineering)
- Wrote about the process of building that nuclear reactor: how initially I thought it was simple to build one because I understood the concepts and theories behind one, but only to learn that it was way more complicated. We ended up succeeding but had to go through an extra 8 months learning the additional theories behind the reactor (power supply, vacuum chamber, etc). Wrote about how introspection (to avoid arrogance) was important to me.
Second choice major essay: (chem)
- Wrote about my experiences about conducting a research project at a university and how exciting it was to feel as if I’ve “synthesized knowledge” myself out of data. It was quite a different experience to be able to come up with my own hypothesis and conclusion rather than following one that was already given (school labs, for instance).
Tell us about yourself essay:
- Wrote about my old background being extremely homogenous and thinking that everyone had the same opinions, which harbored a black and white perspective on opinions: there is a “correct” one and a “wrong” one. Then I moved to a more culturally diverse area and during an in-class discussion, realized that opinions that differ can both be “right”, which created tolerance to different ideas and realizing that other perspectives can also synthesize opinions that are “correct” as opposed to my traditional thought that there must be a right and wrong opinion.
**Other: **
Country (if international applicant): Canada
School Type: Public, IB School
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: Top 0.05%+ of the world
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): 3rd gen college
**Reflection: **
Strengths: ECs, ACT score
Weaknesses: preeeety ■■■■■■ grades; my essays were also ~150 words over the word count. oh well
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: ECs, IB, Essay content
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: University of Toronto, Queen’s University (Canadian universities)
**General Comments: **
Don’t go over your word count or else you’re going to be worried and regretting that you shouldn’t have done that. It will leave doubts if you were deferred/denied/rejected/waitlisted. Best to eliminate all sources of doubt!
Decision: ** Accepted - CS- engineering **

Weaknesses: ACT score kinda but I think they place emphasis on math so that helps, GPA could have been better, more computer science activities/programs in high school would really help.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Honestly looking at the stats of many people accepted in CS on CC, lots of people may think it’s very hard to get in. It not easy, but you can do it. I mean I thought the same and I am from one of the hardest groups to get in - Out-of-state indian male majoring in CS at UIUC. Only advice I can give you is to just stay committed and let your passion shine in your application!
