Accepted CFAA dance!!!
GPA 3.73 UW

Admission letters up!
It would have told you in your admissions letter if you were selected, and it’s also on your MyIllini account.
Does anyone know if you need to fill out the FAFSA in order to receive merit scholarships? I know I won’t get anything for regular need-based aid so I don’t want to fill it out if there’s no need to.
DD got accepted early Feb to CS at COE, her 2nd choice. No news on merit aid so not sure that she’ll get it.
OOS
SAT 1490
GPA 4.24
APs are mostly on STEM subj
Good essays and rec
Same q as sml1234: need FAFSA to get merit?
S17 recently learned that he was admitted to Math & CS in LAS with LAS James Scholar invitation! The process was a bit circuitous, as he initially listed CS in Engineering as his first choice (with Math & CS in LAS as 2nd choice), got deferred in Dec and then admitted to pre-engineering in Feb (with DGS James Scholar invite). It’s ridiculously hard to transfer into CS and he’s not interested in any other engineering majors, so pre-engineering was not a good option for him. We learned that he was never even considered for Math & CS (which he has always been genuinely interested in), so he requested a program change last week. Very relieved that the change was granted (w/ LAS honors invite too). (He has very strong stats: 35 ACT, 4.0 UW GPA with lots of rigor… we knew CS Eng. was a reach, but are glad 2nd choice major worked out in the end).
Did he submit an appeal form @262mom ?
@ALLCAPS24 he submitted a Program/Term Change Form (found at the bottom of his admitted checklist). I had several conversations with folks in admissions and DGS/pre-engineering before he did it. Normally students forfeit their admissions to the college/major they are admitted to when they submit this form, but the situation is a bit different this year for students admitted to pre-engineering (PREP). I posted about this a couple of weeks ago in a different thread.
oh nvm I was waitlisted for CS Engineering and I wanted to see if i could switch to CS+X bc its much easier to get into
@262mom Wow, we had almost the exact same scenario! My S17 (in state) was admitted EA for his 2nd choice in Physics COE but was denied for CS COE. He has similar stats to your son, 35 ACT, 4.3 W GPA. After speaking to UIUC admissions, we rolled the dice and he submitted a program change form for Math & CS in LAS. So happy he did! He was admitted and also received a James Scholar invitation.
Congratulations to him!
I’m pretty sure the switch to LAS helped him get James Scholar. When I got to know I was invited to be a James Scholar for COE, I read up a lot about it. There aren’t a ton of benefits, but UIUC students say the priority registration is a godsend.
@ringmybell that does sound similar! I hope we’ll be able to learn more about the Math & CS major during an upcoming visit. I actually think it may be a better fit for my S, since he is equally interested in math and CS, and is also into philosophy and other liberal arts subjects (I could see him double majoring, even), but I want to make sure he’d have access to equivalent CS experiences as are avail. in engineering (since he’s already been admitted to engineering programs at a couple of other schools). We are in state, too, BTW.
@ByteZz I agree it seems like the main perk for James Scholars is the priority registration.
@262mom We are attending the upcoming James Scholar reception at UIUC. We are a little familiar with it, as my daughter is a Junior at UIUC and a James Scholar in the AHS college. She definitely appreciates the early registration! I am hoping that perk will be an even bigger benefit in the CS program, given the popularity of the major.
@ringmybell we signed up for an admitted student visit day in a couple of weeks, but we may try to attend one of the upcoming LAS James Scholar receptions instead (or in addition). S only learned of LAS admission and James Scholar status yesterday, so we’re still trying to figure out how to proceed.
Accepted OOS
Major: Biology
GPA: 4.0
SAT 1: 1350, 1400 ( only sent in the 1350)
My financial aid package consisted of mainly loans so UIUC has moved down my list.
My son got accepted to Materials Engineering (first choice, he is really one of the few people not interested in CS). Nothing in the mail still - could it be because we just submitted FAFSA? We don’t expect any financial aid.
Email came on 2/3, and it’s on his myIllini.
OOS, GPA UW 3.74, ACT 34, also submitted two perfect SAT Subject test scores just because it was one package with the regular SAT (1490).
Has everybody received a letter in the mail already?
Congratulations to him! Also, the number of people who aren’t interested in CS isn’t small. Aerospace Engineering major checking in!
Just a word of warning to Math & CS people, you will be taking much more theoretical math classes and Computation Theory classes, so just know what the major entails and make sure that’s what you want to be doing.
Accepted into civil engineering which is my first choice. Will anybody be going to Admitted Student Days on March 31st?
Anyone got the Study Abroad e-mail??
