***OFFICIAL UIUC Class of 2022 Decisions Thread****

As the results have been released, I was wondering if the applicants could discuss their respective decisions - something that would not only help the present applicants to know about one another but also the future applicants during their admissions process. I would like to request you all to post ONLY and ONLY if it’s an actual decision.

Just remove the “a” in the bold, size, and color of your decision.

Why Major Essays (rating 1-10, details): I wouldn’t be able to give an objective rating to the quality of my essays. However I assumed they were pretty good. I wrote about how my brother fostered my love for engineering and how I pursued work experience by sending cover letters and portfolios to companies. For my alternate major’s essay I wrote about my experiences at airshows as a kid, flying in my uncle’s plane, and other fond experiences regarding flight and astronomy as a child.

Reflection

Strengths: Ability to balance school, work, and hobbies. I think my internship set myself apart from other applicants since I already have industry experience.
Weaknesses: Math and science standardized testing
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Persistent interest in engineering. My coursework and extracurriculars show that I’ve wanted to be an engineer all throughout high school.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted: Iowa State, Michigan State, Michigan

General Comments (if any): Do what you love. Don’t get too caught up in a particular part of your application, there’s probably many other things that you’ve done to offset any “flaws.” It is okay to give up something to pursue another thing. Also stay off of the Chance Me threads. Unless they work in admissions, they have no idea where you’re going to end up. I learned this the hard way

Decision: Accepted

Volunteer/Community service: Elementary School Volunteer, 2014 - Present

Why Major Essays (rating 1-10, details): the First choice was BioEngineering and I spoke about my research I’ve started in Science Fair and how invested I was in continuing it during my undergrad year. I had recently begun researching pathways in killing bacteria cells and tumors as an application for treating fibroids and ovarian tumors in women. My second choice was Latino/a studies, and I spoke about my artwork is a reflection of who I am in relationship to my community. I also spoke about how I seek to educate others on the community and the layers that come when reflecting on latinidad.

Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: BioEngineering
Alternative Major (if any): Latino/a Studies
State (if domestic applicant): IL
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Public, IB
Ethnicity: Hispanic (Mexican American - First Generation)
Gender: M
Income Bracket: ~ 97000
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM, Father did not complete HS and is in prison

Reflection

Strengths: I showed a STRONG interest for both my mayors, but I was disappointed when not getting into my first choice. I did mention that I will eventually make it a double major because I want to study both.
Weaknesses: My test scores are low for the school, I was not surprised that I was not selected for the college of engineering. My STEM score for the ACT was a 27, so there was not a surprise in their decision.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think I was accepted to my second choice because of my essay and success as an artist already. I feel that my test score is what rejected me from the first choice major.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
Accepted: DePaul University (Pre-Med), Loyola Unversity Chicago (Bilingual/Bicultural Education and Pre-Med), the University of Illinois at Chicago (LAS Undecided), School of the Art Institute of Chicago (Art Education), Illinois State University (Biology).
Waitlisted: Illinois Institute of Technology (BioEngineering)
Rejected: None
Pending: University of Chicago (Deferred EA - Switched EDII), Northwestern University, Stanford University, University of Michigan - Ann Arbor, Unversity of Southern California, Rensellear Polytechnic Institute, Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, UIC (Honors / GPPA - Pre Med)

General Comments (if any): Keep working for your own goals, you are in charge of your own path. Admissions is something difficult to understand but work hard for what you want to achieve. Do not compare yourself to others in the chance me threads, because they are seeking the best class, not the best student.
