Jellybeans I am with you in complete shock…SAT’s 780 x3 here, and waitlisted in state…unreal…

It’s something about girls and UNC Chapel Hill. They just really love them and no offense especially African American girls. I know 30 black girls who applied and 23 of them were accepted. And 10 of them have either been suspended for fighting, cheating or were not even in the top ten percent of the class. One of my friends meanwhile is an African American male whose higher ranked than them, had more leadership positions and attended numerous programs there but applied early action, got deferred and then just found out today he won’t know until Monday at the EARLIEST. I’m frustrated for him to be honest.

[/ul]General Comments:
I was ecstatic when I saw I was admitted this morning (it’s morning here in China!). UNC-CH has a great chem department that I know I absolutely wanna go to. For my GPA, Chinese high schools tend to grade on a much harsher curve, and my high school is the most competitive in my province and is a top 50 high school in my country, so my uw gpa is only a 3.66 (we don’t have AP/honors course, so there’s no weighted GPA).
I’m still waiting for the decisions of a couple publics and some LACs, so I’ll make my decision next week or so. Go Heels!

My browser crashed and I’m not rewriting everything but here’s the breakdown.

Accepted In-State
Top 10%
3.5 unweighted 4.25 weighted GPA
Lots of honors and Ap classes(especially my last 2 years of high school)
horrible SAT score
25 ACT
Amazing essays and recommendations
Tons of EC’s and leadership positions
Volunteered at numerous places
Hispanic gay male

My teacher who went to UNC informed me that it was really challenging but I personally love challenges so BRING IT ON UNC!

“It’s something about girls and UNC Chapel Hill. They just really love them”

That is wrong. Last year men were accepted at a 35% rate. Women were accepted at a 31.7% rate. Don’t equate the fact that UNC accepts more women with the premise that they somehow prefer women or are that women are advantaged in admissions. The breakdown of women applicants to men is huge. That is why there are more women than men that attend. But, the bottom line is that it is much easier for men to be admitted because of the discrepancy in application numbers.

I applied for business and I was happy when I got assured into Kennan Flagler. My scores aren’t that great at all but what really boosted me was my essays and my extras. I focused a lot on my essays and i did a lot of research on the school itself and i showed why i thought that UNC was a perfect match for me in my essays.

My extras were quite impressive. I was the head of a community service project in which we had to raise lots of money and provide services to under serviced villagers (i dont live in the US, but I am a citizen). In addition I had an internship at Facebook and another startup and I received a top position in a prestigious business plan competition and thats about it :). I am aiming for Cornell but I am very happy with UNC and I think its a great school.

Congrats to those who got in

And to those who were unlucky - dont give up hope!

I wish everybody the best of luck :)

fireinyourhole, how do you get assured admission?:)
