Official UNC-Chapel Hill Fall 2013 Transfer Thread

@tndud
I applied to Georgetown first year & had my interview. It’s just an alumni talking to you; they have like… a list of questions they ask and everything.

I applied pretty early because I had January off and didn’t want to come back to NYU without having finished it all since I know that I procrastinate and everything here. Lol.

I don’t think it’s that way. I think they wait until the deadline and look at the applicants as a whole. I don’t think I have a leg up because I sent everything in before you.

@all
Hopefully it’s this Friday. If so, if I’m accepted I’ll know in time to skip out on one of those FUN mandatory information sessions about things for next year lol

Based on what everyone’s saying they’ve heard from admissions, if it’s not this Friday, I think it’ll be next. But, I’m still hoping it’s this Friday!!!

why did she ask you for a recommendation?

@ronaldinho

since a recommendation is not required of transfer students, i was not goona send in one, but feel like it will only help me lol so i asked her if i can send it and then she said that to me lol

@tndud
I applied to Georgetown as a transfer as well. I had my interview today and it’s really casual. According to the Georgetown transfer thread, there won’t be much weight on the interview.

@bcotton530
yea i heard it’s just alumni interview but feel a bit scared of it because i am not speaking english very fluently lol And I hope it’s not disadvantageous to send in materials late…
@AFE111
good to know! if it weighed so much on decisions, my life would be done lol

can you guys please tell me some questions you have during the interview?
i have no idea about what to prepare for

@tnud i applied to georgetown as a first year applicant. my interview was super informal. we met at a starbucks and he just asked me about what my classes were that year, what made me apply to georgetown, my family, and about soccer, since he had seen my team in the newspaper recently. Then we talked a little about housing, how ridiculously expensive life in DC is, and if I was thinking about grad school. If i remember correctly, the whole thing lasted less than half an hour.

@tndud I ALSO met my interviewer at a Starbuck’s lol. It’s really not a serious thing. And your English seems alright. You’ll be fine. & I’m sure it’s fine but the longer people keep sending things in, the longer the decisions’ll take.

I don’t remember any of the questions. But it’s mainly stuff about you, I think. I don’t remember anything being like… crazy and throwing me off.

@tndud If you can, do a little research on the university though. It’s nice to be able to talk about certain programs or whatever you’re interested in. Oh. And my interviewer also asked if IIII had any questions - which I wasn’t prepared for really, lol - so just make a list or something of things you’re curious about.

@tndud
mine was about 55 mins. I met him in his office. I talked about my potential majors, future plans and why georgetown. it could be really informative and he asks me if I have any questions.

Hey guys I have a question. If I get accepted, is it possible to defer my admission offer for two years? There is a mandatory military service I need to do, so I just want to finish it ASAP before I transfer to UNC.

@Jk I honestly don’t know. I’d recommend contacting the people at UNC that deal with military stuff (like VA benefits and all that). I do know that UNC is known to be “military-friendly” university though, so it’s possible that they’ll work with you.

@bcotton&AFE

thank you guys, i really appreciate your advices. now i know what to prepare for before friday. im gonna be so informative, i just wanna tell her all the truth and my feeling for gtown. Of course i won’t say i applied to GT because of its name lol
I just finished crappy english essays, and gonna sleep for 3 hours and go to school.
can’t believe spring break is just over omg… what am i supposed to do at this point
my head is still full with unc unc and unc…
Hope i will do well on the interview thing and thanks a lot guys.

@Jk1018
hi, you must be 21-23 years old lol
i was realised from the duty like 3 years ago, and it was not a total waste of time.
i feel so bad for you because you are going to take time off, but face it and you are gonna learn about your life and become much more matured.
sorry for not being able to answer your question though

oops.

im gonna be so informative -> im NOT gonna be

i mean im not just going to give her answer, but to tell my story if i have chance.
i just don’t want to be so official like a business man lol
thank you anyway!! good night guys

Jk1018: You can defer for up to a year due to military commitments if accepted. If i were you, I would have held of applying till next year (since you would be a year out at that point). You could use the extra year to add ECs and college courses. Extra time to prepare will make you more competitive in the long run. Refer to this link for more in depth information regarding military deferment. [Deferring Your Admission](http://www.admissions.unc.edu/Apply/Policies/defer.html)

JK: What branch and what mandatory military service are you obligated to do? A deployment?

i think he’s talking about korean military service for 2 years which is mandatory for korean men.
sorry if it’s usa military lol

Well that’s a crying shame, maybe he can pawn it off to the government that he wants to finish his education to become an officer they’ll let him go. If not, I would withdraw my application. I would imagine they’re going to wonder why you submitted knowing you couldn’t attend and I don’t think that’s going to win brownie point for next go-around. Just my opinion though.

Just as tndud6364 said, It is a Korean army and sorry for not making my point clear. I received an email from the admission representative and said I can defer my offer for one year.

Is there anyway you can defer your service requirement until after you finish your undergrad? Maybe you can petition your government or the particular military branch you have to serve in to let you finish your education so you can become an officer when you come back. Maybe you can add a military science minor to your study’s to make the deal more enticing. I know a lot of you guys get sent to the School of Americas in Fort Benning, Georgia. Do you know of any such programs available to you guys?
