Hey everyone, I transferred in 2012 so if anyone has any questions, let me know! I transferred from a community college in Illinois so I’m definitely a minority here!

My application through the Common App was submitted six minutes late. When I tried to submit earlier in the night, it started asking questions about my father who I never knew and died last august. I had to make phone calls to get the info it was asking. I’m going to be devastated if they don’t accept it.

Do you think it is really hard for an international student to transfer into UNC. I am currently a sophomore in University of Iowa.

Turns out they did accept my application six minutes late. So, here we go…

OOS Junior Transfer from a CC in NYC. Hoping to study Political Science

Stats: Non-Trad 27, NYC resident(Brooklyn), Male
hooks: Low income, military(decorated combat veteran), First generation.
College GPA: 3.725(waiting for one more grade to come in, should be 3.75)
HS: Dropped out, GED
SAT: Not required for Juniors
College: Phi Theta Kappa. Macro and Micro Economics Honors courses, Short Story Honors(Advanced literature course) and Global Politics Honors; also, Literature of the city writing intensive and Science and Humanism writing intensive courses. Recs: Two absolutely glowing letters from professors I took advanced classes with. They’re both very personable and not generic at all.

Awards: Deans list three consecutive times at my school. SEEALL Academy Award for Leadership(Participated in a toys for tots drive and mentoring about leadership in a Brooklyn public school)

EC’s: I worked with a foundation in my community college that focuses on raising money for scholarships for low income students(This was my pleasure, especially coming from humble beginnings myself). I gave an eight minute speech at a fundraising event and mingled with the potential and current donors. Also, I participated in an Honors Society committee and gave input into a research project and wrote an article about another event we had.

Military: U.S. Army Paratrooper(Infantry) for five years. I served in the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. I Deployed to Iraq twice: 15 months to Samarra, Iraq and 12 months to Eastern Baghdad.

reason for transferring: I fell in love with Chapel Hill the first time I visited. Once I looked into the school, I was sold.

I’m an international student, and I transferred to UNC. From what I recall, your chances will be the same as any other applicant because there is no preference for in-state vs. OOS in transfer admissions.
However, when it comes to financial aspect, there will be a difference. I don’t remember UNC’s policy, but I know that many universities will only accept you if you can prove you have sufficient funds since (I’m assuming) you may not qualify for FA because of your status.

Sorry, Fall 2011*

Snogintheloo: What would you say my chances are? If you don’t mind me asking ,that is.

I’m not qualified to say if you’ll get in or not, (I’m tryin myself) but I do gotta sister for you to marry. I would be proud to have even a 1/4 of the service record you do. Airborne!

Gettingoutofca: Thank you very much for your kind words! And I am single! lol

Thank you! Can you chance me ? I ll send you my application through email if you can.

Thank you! I am applying Econ. Could you help chance me?

I’m currently a student at wake forest looking to transfer to unc. I’m an oos student, though I heard they dont take state residency into account for tranfers. My first semester I got a 3.1 at wake and I have solid extracurriculars and a decent essay. I got 2040 on the sats overall, 1350 for reading/math. I was ranked 15/300 from a pretty good public hs. I know my college gpa is low, but I’m hoping it won’t be a huge negative given that wake forest is well known to have tough grading. Do I have a good shot at getting in?
