It's my first post on this forum and I wanted to start a forum for all of us transfers pursuing acceptance into UNC, Fall 2014! If I could get an opinion on my chances of getting accepted that'd be fantastic guys!

Transferring From: Appalachian State University
Current Classification: Applying as a JUNIOR

So that's it guys! I'm really nervous and anxious. I'll also be submitting recommendations from my Accounting professor and my Music professor. I'm hoping to eventually get into Kenan-Flagler, if not...Economics major, business minor. Please give me your opinions and any advice. Thanks!

Welcome to the forums BTBTH! I think you have a very good shot, in fact you’re probably guaranteed. KF is VERY hard to get into for transfers though, in fact I’ve heard that it is almost impossible. I’m not sure to be honest how admissions to KF work for transfers but I wish you luck. I’m actually not applying for Fall 2014 but rather 2015, however I love watching these threads haha. Good luck to you!

Sorry, I had no idea that someone had actually responded to my post. These UNC Transfer posts are extremely addicting; it’s not unusual for several hours to pass by! Thank you for the response. My biggest concern is leaving my double major at App State behind; I also have the opportunity to maintain a great GPA and graduate with Business honors.

What’s scaring me is the risk I take not knowing if I’ll be accepted into Kenan-Flagler. I have heard it is nearly impossible for transfers to get in; I’m uneasy about switching to an Econ major with a business minor if denied…

Double major (finance & marketing) w/ Honors from App State
VS.
Econ Major, Business minor from UNC (if not accepted into Kenan-Flagler)

In your opinion, what’s going to more competitive after school??? I’m hoping to get into the finance/marketing industry.

I still think UNC is the better overall school. Try your hardest once you get there to get into KF, because who knows, right? If you do end up getting in, thats awesome! Even if you don’t, UNC is still a better name to have attached to you than App. Also, you could always try KF for grad school, right? I’m not so savvy on the business/econ/finance etc. majors @ UNC, I’m a journalism major haha.

I’m applying as a junior for Fall 2014 and don’t know if I’m a competitive applicant.

Transferring From: A local community college
Current Classification: Currently a sophomore, applying as a junior
College GPA: 3.7
Major: Communications
Minor: None Currently
High School GPA: 2.9 or 3.0
Volunteer Work:
— Over 200 hours at UNC Hospitals
Honors:
— Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society
Other Work & ECs:
— Intern at AT&T

I’m fairly confident I can write a very good essay and great letters of recommendation. Additionally, my sister is a UNC grad. Someone chance me please!

I think you’re very competitive justblewit! UNC will like to see those 200 hours at UNC hospitals. That’s very impressive. I think you have nothing to worry about. Also, you’re a junior so HS stats don’t matter. Good luck!

NCXfer, I really appreciate your input! I completely agree with you, the name itself, the respect, and the immense sense of community Chapel Hill has is unbeatable. I hear the Journalism at UNC is one of the best in the nation! Good luck to you when applying next year. Where are you attending currently?

Hi guys,
First time posting as well, could someone chance me?

Transferring from: UNC-Greensboro
Current Classification: Currently a freshman, so applying to be a sophomore
College GPA: 3.7
Major: Computer Science
Minor: Entrepreneurship
High School GPA: 3.17

1 High school in my state, top 90 in the country.

I did a summer internship at UNC in the Computer Science department helping a professor make a plan for his new robotics course.

I have started 5 companies in the past, some becoming fairly successful.
-My dad is a part time professor at UNC.

I took a summer course at Harvard.

My high school GPA is not the best but I’m hoping the rest will outweigh my past.

Since you’re applying as a sophomore your HS stats will weigh in your decision. You have REALLY impressive EC’s though, and your GPA is right at the average for UNC transfers according to their website. If you can write a really good essay, I think you would have a fair shot, however it’s still pretty tough to get in as a sophomore. Good luck!

I wouldn’t say significantly, no. Are there any honor societies you can join at UNCG? Any computer science related clubs? It’s important that you show involvement at your current university, so try to get involved there because you didn’t mention any college-related EC’s.

This is my second time applying to UNC as a transfer. Last year I applied as a sophomore but was wait listed then denied.

Does anyone know if it looks bad to opt out of submitting SAT scores as a JR applicant? Mine are R:580 M:560 W:600 but I haven’t taken it since 2011. Also applying to UNCW, Emory, Vanderbilt, NYU, and George Washington.

I’m currently a freshman at UNCW, so I’m applying as a sophomore to Chapel Hill. I would love to know what my chances are of getting in! I saw a post above about someone who got a 4.0 and was denied, and now I’m terrified. Any input would be appreciated! Thank you!

@ihope, you have a really impressive collection of EC’s there, and your GPA is great! The only thing holding you back is high school stats, and for soph transfers, those still weigh fairly heavily. If you can write a good essay, you should be at least competitive. If you can’t get in this year, you would be pretty much guaranteed as a junior transfer in my opinion with those stats. I know it stinks to have to wait around to transfer, but hang in there. Good luck!

On the UNC transfer page it says there is one essay question we should answer on the common app, but I don’t see any writing supplement on the common app under my UNC tab. Anyone else having this problem?

I am applying to UNC-CH in Fall 2014. If anyone is in a similar situation, or could give me an idea of my chances that would be great! So far this thread has been very informative.

Current School: A major NC public university (not NCSU)
Current class standing: Sophomore
Total credit hours thus far: 45
Applying as a: Junior, hopefully, but I am afraid that I may be 3 credits short of a Junior standing
College GPA: 3.75
Unweighted/weighted HS GPA: 3.7/4.3
SAT/ACT: not good.
Current major: Film/international double major
Intended major: Media Studies/Global Studies double major, if possible.

EC in HS:

Hey, NCXfer I’ve seen post a few times in my threads saying that I have a good chance at UNC. I appreciate the posts but I have one question. How do I have a decent chance at UNC (econ major) when I see overly qualified candidates on all UNC transfer threads who have similar college gpas, better high school gpas, and ridiculous ECs compared to me? Is it because I will be transferring as a junior or is it to make me feel better? lol.
