Official UNC-Chapel Hill Fall 2014 Transfer Thread

I just read the fall 2013 thread for UNC applicants…

there were 4.0’s from NYU applying. Feel nervous again :(

@strandedinhell that is such a small percentage of the people. Calm down haha. If you have a 4.0 with 30+ credits you’re golden. I remember seeing some guy from emory with like a 3.9 saying UNC was his dream school in HS haha.

I just have to concentrate on my coursework I guess. I’m just worrying so much. The more I read about UNC and their amazing research in computer science the more I convince myself that I’m not going to get in. Sort of a way to prepare myself in case I get rejected haha.

If I can get A’s on these English courses I can maintain my gpa…anyway. I feel like I’m hijacking this thread from actual 2014 transfers!

@NCXfer

you’re a saint! and if i get in, i’ll return the favor when it comes fall 2015 :slight_smile:

@collegeguy42
@amword

I think both of you have equal chances honestly. It’s tougher to get in as a sophomore but both of you have an impressive list of EC’s. I would say high match for both of you.

I have a quick question:

Do you guys think sending a stupid E-mail to the university can damage your chances? Not that I’ve done so…

I am not sure how competitive I am so I figured I would ask for a guess.

I am applying as a JUNIOR and this is my third year in community college.
First three semesters were in TN.
Last three in North Carolina.
-3.75 gpa
-no Withdrawals or C’s on the transcript
-No pauses in my college career
-Had a job every year since I was 13
-Latino woman
-Major: Journalism and Mass Comm
-200 hours comm service at a local elementary school senior year in high school
-Secretary of service club Soph year in college
-Led, created, and director of a charity event my junior year in college
-2 amazing letters of rec. (one of my professors said I was “one of the very, very best students he has ever had.”)
-Spent a month on my essay —spoke about overcoming fear of public communication and how it is my passion now.
-Dean’s list 4/5 college semesters

Thank you for reading / any responses.

@TNborn49 ,from what I know that looks like an awesome profile.

@strandedinhell thank you for replying! It is hard to tell what Chapel hill considers competitive. I have heard from people who attend Chapel hill that a 3.5 gpa is very competitive for juniors but getting on these forums completely negates what they have told me.

Well the website says the average transfer GPA is something like 3.7

Yeah that is for all transfer students combined though…I think

True…

I also found out they like to see different things for different majors. For example, for computer science they don’t really care about EC’s

Really? How about mass comm and journalism?

@TNborn49

Woo another J-school applicant!!

I think the best thing is to try to get internships thru your current college. Or you can try to write for an online website. As of now I only have PTK, a 20hr per week job, and some high school volunteering. But I’m also not applying till Fall 2015.

Alright. @NCXfer well putting an internship aside which I could do this summer, would you consider me competitive?

@NCXfer because I already applied to UNC in Jan.

@TNborn49 I would say you have a very good chance. Very impressive ECs, work experience etc. And your GPA is still above the average which is great.

@NCXfer thank you. I am hoping for the best. I guess we will have to wait and see (:

Got wait listed last year as an OSS…hopefully I can get in this go around.

Ethnicity: Asian

High School GPA: 3.6 UW, 4.11 W, Top 10%
9 APs
College Clubs/ECs:

  • Vice-President of the Honors Program Student Association

  • Environmental Awareness Club 4 years
  • HOSA 4 years
  • AP Scholar with Honor
  • SAT 1880
  • SAT 2 Bio (M) 740
  • SAT 2 World History 700

Got my Honors Sociology professor (I freaking love this person) to write my recommendation.
Essay: It’s ■■■■■■■ gold.

Courses I’m taking this semester:

  • Honors Bio 2
  • Chem 2
  • Calc 2
  • 200 lvl Sociology class
  • 200 lvl Psych class
    (18 hrs)

The only thing I’m really concerned about is my GPA from last semester…the D in that Calc 2 class is sort of an accomplishment considering how about 80% of the class either withdrew or failed the class…seriously, that professor wasn’t playing around. However, I’m retaking the class with another professor who happens to have the highest grade on rate my professors for my school’s math professors, and it’s going extremely well.
