Does anyone know the average gpa for 2013 admission of JUNIOR transfers only? I get that a 3.7 was the average of all tranfers but I can not find junior specific stats for 2013.

@TNborn49 Junior transfer only average is roughly 3.5/6. Figure its easier to get in as a junior transfer, so there will be lower GPA’s.

You are so attentive and helpful! Thank you for the speedy reply! @NCXfer I am getting paranoid about my essay now. I read a few of those who were admitted and they were extremely specific. People said mine was fantastic but it is not nearly as specific as those I have read. How is your essay?

@NCXfer sorry to ask so many questions but if it is not too much trouble one more? On the Common App, under work experience, I have had several different restaurant jobs (like 7 through the years) so I did not put specifically where I have worked ( they did not give me much room) so I used ONE tab and said I have worked in the restaurants since I was 13. “Hostess/ Carside/ Table busser” etc. But not all seven places I have worked. Do you think that will look bad that I did not tell them where I am working now? I don’t think there were 7 tabs left…

@TNborn49 First off, I appreciate the kind words! I’m no expert, I just spend a ridiculous amount of time researching these types of threads haha.

I’m actually not applying this year, but rather Fall 2015. In regards to the essay, when you say specific, do you mean specific to UNC? As in why transfer to UNC? or what?

I also work in a restaurant! I think its important to remember that a robot isn’t reading your app looking for specific words. I probably would have specified “several” and I probably would have also stated where I currently work, but I don’t think it would make or break your application either way.

@NCXfer you sound like an expert though and it is very generous for you to take the time to give me this advice! I have been driving my family crazy with all this UNC stuff. And they would not know because we just moved here a little over a year ago!
About the essay, a girl who was admitted said in her essay very specific reasons for transferring. Ie. To be closer to her mom, hopefully to write for the daily Tar Heel, and study abroad.
In my essay, it was very well written and I had lots of people revise it BUT I was not that specific. All I said was the journalism program with its’ greatness would inspire me, I want to keep improving, CC has prepared me for a four year like UNC, and I hope to create more charity events in the future. I feel as though it is not as specific as it should be but maybe I am just being anal.
And you do not think that not saying where I work now would jeopardize my chances? That is easily one of the biggest flaws in my App. I am so scared…

@TNborn49 Well to me that essay sounds specific. Maybe not to UNC specifically, but it sets the goals you want to accomplish and I think thats what the ‘why transfer’ essay is all about.

I wouldn’t worry to much about not having listed where you currently work. Let’s be honest, you would get accepted or declined based on that one thing. The adcom won’t think “This person can’t list where they currently work? They obviously won’t succeed here.” Just put it behind you and focus on the good parts of your app. Everybody is going to have a flaw here or there. You have a very impressive profile otherwise.

@NCXfer Wow, did I need to hear that! I feel better actually. (exhales) It is nice to read some uplifting comments when you have been worrying non-stop over this for months. Thank you again for taking time to help me and the others on here. I really had no clue if I was competitive or not because of reading all of these overqualified profiles. But I suppose it’s possible that sometimes people leave out things on here to make them look more competitive, who knows.

Hey!

I know I’m a little late to the party with posting all my information and such, but here it is. Let me know what chances you all think of me being accepted! (I know the deadline was Feb. 14, I already applied)

SAT: 1270 (I don’t think this matter for a Junior Transfer though)

@NCtransfer , sorry I can’t chance you as I don’t have a lot of experience in this but I have a question… why didn’t you take one more credit to get your Associates?

Also, I thought the in-state rule depended on your drivers license. I guess someone misguided me

@strandedinhell UCF is not a community college :)

The instate can be tricky and usually yes it is just having a license for at least a year in NC, but I talked with admissions and my parents owning a house and claiming it as mine and their permanent residence for the past year is enough to qualify for instate tuition. I will have 63 completed by the time next fall begins (60 at the end of spring + 3 for an online summer class I am taking). Any thoughts on chances of acceptance? I applied to NCSU kind of as a safety net, any thoughts on that as well?

I’m really worried about my app. In High school I had a rather rigorous schedule, math and science every semester, and I took 7 APs, but I didn’t do well in my classes. I made mostly Cs/Bs and graduated with a 3.3/2.9 GPA. In fact, my second semester Junior year, I took ap chem, ap psych, apush, and precalculus, and I made CCCD respectively. I turned my act around in college and got a 3.81 with a very rigorous schedule, and an even more rigorous schedule this semester. I’m applying as a sophomore, how much do you think that will hurt me? You can see the rest of my application on oage 2. Thank you!

@NCtransfer ,

Yeah that makes sense. I’ll also (eventually) apply to NCSU as a back up (which for my major might even be better)

How much more selective is NC State? That’s my backup for Chemistry/Marine Biology

I think it is more of a lateral transfer in terms of academia compared to UCF(which is where I’m at now), so I am not too worried about getting accepted there. It’s a great school, but not nearly as hard to get into as UNC and especially as a transfer. I’ve heard pretty much 3.0+ GPA will be accepted.

How much weight is placed on Professor recommendations? I have the head of health professions advising and my chemistry professor, both of whom I am very close to writing a recommendation for me.

@IchHeiseBilhelm , it depends on the major you are transferring to. For a lot of the Engineering majors 3.5 + is said to be competitive. For the Eng departments, State only looks at your Math and Physics GPA

Mornin’ CC,

I would love to know what my chances are (if any, at all) of getting accepted to UNC Chapel Hill as a transfer junior.

High School:

Varsity Lacrosse + Soccer

College:

Corps of Cadets - Cadet First Sergeant
Phi Theta Kappa

EXTRAS:

Paid work with 3 separate jobs since 2010.

2010-2012 Maryland Junior State Bass Fishing Team

Tests:

I understand that my stats are not really that impressive, however my application does reflect great improvement and leadership experience through Marion’s Corps of Cadets.

I have probably left something out. If so, I apologize. It will be interesting to hear back from some of you guys to see whether or not I actually have a chance!

Thanks all,

@JHOLDENR

What major are you applying to at UNC?
