*Official UNC Fall 2010 Transfer Thread*

Hey I've looked everywhere and cant find a thread for this. If someone can show me one I'll delete this one and resume discussion there. I'm sure a lot of people are interested in this.

I have 3 questions:

1) I have gotten 2 emails from "UNChelp" which are from students reminding me that the first deadline for application is the 15th, but I cant find this date anywhere else! Does anyone know anything about this?

2) I have completed 82 Units and am taking 8 more next semester, I'm guessing thats a transfer as a junior/senior?

3) How hard is it to get into KF??? When I say I'm applying as a Jr./Sr. it doesn't say I have the option of Business Administration. Does anyone know about this?

The deadline for transfer students is March 1st. Also, UNC will take a maximum of 75 credit hours upon transferring

I believe jake_tim made started a thread earlier in the month. I started one way earlier back in December. Don’t delete it though we can just start building this one up.

To answer your question, it is extremely difficult to get into Kenan Flagler. In fact, it consists of a completely different application process. You must apply as a transfer to UNC for an Arts and Sciences major such as Economics. Then after a semester enrolled at Carolina you can apply to Kenan Flagler. The competition is tough, so you must be comfortable with majoring in something other than business as a backup plan if you plan on attending North Carolina.

Lastly, the maximum number of credits that will transfer over is 75. If 75 credits carry, than you will begin as a junior with 3 semesters remaining (not including summer semesters).

Hope that helps…by the way here is my resume:

College Grades
-3.88 GPA at a Florida public four year university with broad class selection including lots of mathematics, sciences, and humanities
-Applying with 52 Credits (will transfer with 61)

High School Grades
-Around 2.7 unweighted, 3.0 weighted GPA
-SAT: not sending
-I was lazy and an athlete who has matured and changed goals

Essays
-Solid and original

RECs
-Haven’t viewed them but should be great

Service and EC
-Gear Up Florida cyclist - raising minimum of $2,500 and riding a bike 800 miles from Miami to Tallahassee for Push America, a non-profit that raises awareness for people with disabilities.
-Student Ambassador
-Pi Kappa Phi fraternity, holding various director positions
-Part-time job working around 24 hours a week

Good luck everyone!

Orson, that is a pretty long list of possible schools. But if you have $750 sitting around for application fees go for it.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Is there a place to view the profile of admitted transfer students by major? I know many better schools provide this information, but I can’t seem to find it for UNC. Thanks!

bquin21- money well spent imho :}

Haha, better than some other ways you can spend it I guess.

scrsk8 - the site does not provide a profile for admitted transfers by major but it does provide the percentage of students that were admitted by major as a whole transfer class. I don’t think it matters much though because most transfers apply to the school of arts and sciences.

bquin21- Sorry for the confusion that is exactly what I meant. Would you mind posting the link? So for UNC you are compared against others applying to the same school (ex arts and sciences) as opposed to the same major?

Hi, I would like to know my chances for UNC! Texas residency here.

College: Texas A&M - College Station
Current Major: Biology
GPA: 4.0 (A’s in Bio I, Gen Chem I, Chem I Lab, English Comp., & Calc I)
Credits/hours: 24 completed | Will be taking 18 credits/hours spring semester.
EC’s: American Medical Students Association, Premedical Society, Pre-pharmacy society, Aggie Habitat Club, 15 volunteers hours for Habitat, VASA Club.
Recommendations: None
Awards: Dean’s Scholar List (Given for a GPA of at least 3.75 each semester)
SAT: 1970 total (600 CR/700 M/670 W)
High School GPA: 3.77 unweighted (out of 4.0)
APs taken: Biology, Calc AB, Statistics, U.S. History, World History, U.S. Gov & Politics, Macroeconomics, English Language

I’m applying for Biology major here I guess.

scrsk8 - whoops sorry I had seen something before that I glanced over and thought that was what it was stating but it just listed every major and the number of students. http://www.admissions.unc.edu/pdf/UNC_Transfer_QuickFacts.pdf

As far as who you are competing against my guess would be the entire applicant pool but I’m not entirely sure.

bquin- Thanks for the link I hadn’t gotten a chance to see something like that yet. I was hoping to also find a website kind of like this one for ucla

http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/Adm_tr/Tr_Prof09.htm

If anyone can find something like this I’m sure a lot of people would be grateful.

Haha, yeah definitely would be grateful for that type of in depth information but I’ve searched UNC’s site in and out and haven’t found anything of the sort.

I don’t mind the unsure feeling though. I can’t wait for April to come around…

I hear you bquin. So the process to get into KF is apply to UNC, get admitted, then apply to KF. But what should you apply as for admission? It seems like it would be unfair for someone to apply and be admitted into some joke major and have a shot at KF as opposed to a qualified candidate applying for a difficult major to get the same chance…

I’m looking to transfer to UNC, could someone give me an idea of my chances?

I’m from New York, transferring in as a sophomore for fall 2010.
College: NYU Stern
Current Major: Undecided (Business-related, though)
GPA: 3.175, but will likely improve next semester.
Credits/hours: 16 as of now, 32 by the end of spring semester.
EC’s: None in college.
SAT: 2140 total (740 CR/690 M/710 W) – but probably not sending.
ACT: 33
High School GPA: 4.0
High School Class Rank: Valedictorian
APs taken: None, school didn’t offer them.

So, I know I’ll be hurt by my lack of college extracurriculars and college GPA (as well as out-of-state status), but will higher test scores make up for it?

Seriously, I have no idea how transfer selectivity works, so I would LOVE is someone could give me some input :)

scrsk8 - Yeah it may seem that way but for the most part everyone applying to KF has had a similar curriculum for the first two years, lots of humanities and required math and business courses. I’m applying as a Statistics major because that is what I want to minor in, but I probably will not take any statistics courses until after I’m already admitted to KF. You can apply to KF after one completed semester at UNC. I plan on taking the prerequisite courses that my current university does not offer (or does not transfer over) before applying.

monstersgoMoo - You have a really good high school record, which is probably going to weigh a lot considering you have taken so few courses thus far. I’d say you have as decent a shot as any sophomore applicant. The 33 on the ACT certainly helps your cause.

Does my friend have a chance or should she wait another year?

2.79 hs gpa 1500/1600 sat

low income URM-hunter college nyc

communications major

Fall-18 credits-4.0 gpa

Spring-18 credits

I’m pretty sure they will pay more attention to the high school grades since she doesn’t have that many college credits. If she waits another year she’ll have much better chances.

i also heard that UNC prefers junior standings (applying sophomore year) so tell your friend to wait 1 more year

monstersgoMOO, I applied to UNC as a sophomore transfer last year and did not get in, and had a 3.9 GPA and strong SAT’s. Extracurriculars are pretty important at UNC, but for sophomore transfers, high school academic rigor and performance will be very important. Residency status does not play into transfer admissions, though.
