this is torture!

It’s only a week away! Though since we are talking about UNC, decisions will probably come out late (like they often do).

I really hope everyone gets in! You all seems like intelligent students who really do have a passion for UNC :)

I hope we all get in too! I’m not only dying to hear, but I’m dying to know where I’m going to go! I’m doing to be a mess on friday, completely nervous the whole time I’m working! I just know it. If I get it, I really want a “carolina girl, best in the world” just so I can go to my gmas over easter and have one day of bragging rights!
Hahaha, so selfish, but whatever! If I don’t, than I’ll lay in bed and eat cupcakes.

it better be soon! may 13th is the enrollment day for transfer students! so…it’ll be before than and if any of get waitlisted hopefully we dont have to wait too long.

T minus 5 days, 2 hours and 43 minutes!

ugh i know its torture not knowing where ill be going to school. im such a control freak its hard not having any control over these things! i want to be able to start planning!!! torture torture torture

I really like to plan as well, so it’s hard not being able to do anything now! Just take deep breaths and think: 5 more days. That’s it- not too far away! Unless they decide to release decisions later than Friday…which in that case i will be ****ED haha

i know i need to just relax… but i cant! okay five more days, five more days.

do you guys know if most juniors live on or off campus? also is the greek scene a big part of the social life?

Most junior transfers live on campus, but I think that a majority of juniors who have been here move off campus. I’ve seen that statistic somewhere. (That’s not to say all junior transfers live on campus, or that no “regular” juniors move off campus). I think the stats are about 60% and 40% respectively living on campus.

As for Greek life, ~15% of the student body is part of it. It’s definitely there and apparent, but does not have a big hold on social life. Many frat houses throw big parties, but you’ll find lots of other things to do on weekends as well. Usually Greeks just attract Greeks, and non-Greeks will tend to make a social life with non-Greeks. So, it’s there if you want it but you can avoid it if you don’t want it.

A few of you spoke about what time decisions are released. Last year they said to check between 5 and 7pm.

Something else to keep in mind: Next year there will be a junior transfer student living learning community. You can find out more about living learning communities (LLCs) on the Housing website, but in brief, you apply to get into it and will be placed in a specific residence hall on a specific floor. It will be a social community that will have its own events. This year it will be in Rams Village, which is an on-campus apartment complex. It should be a really great experience and a great way to meet new people who are also transfers! I think it may just be for junior transfers coming from a community college, but I am not 100% sure.

Hi! I am interested, would you mind shooting me an email for more information. Thanks!

You guys who are generally familiar with transfer criteria. How does this stack up for Fall 2011 sophomore admission?

HS GPA (weighted) 4.2; varsity basketball (6A school); lots of community service, etc.
College (FSU) GPA: 3.95; Dean’s list, National Honorary scholar, etc. Business major.

Out of state; parents both attended UNC.

Thanks!

Sicneill, I’ve been told that generally those accepted as sophomore transfers have the hs grades, scores and es’s that would have gotten them accepted right out of high school. The reason for this is that all admissions has to look at in your sophomore transfer application information is your 1st semester of college grades, therefore your hs performance carries more weight.

Regardless though, if you have a stellar essay that communicates the positives UNC is looking for, then anything can happen.

Also, OOS transfer students are not subject to the 18% rule, so you are not handicapped vs in-state transfer applicants.

Your 4.2 wt hs GPA is close to the 4.47 average for incoming first year students… If you took a very rigorous hs curriculum, have lots of community service, plus middle 50 percentile SAT (1200 to 1410) and/or ACT (27 to 31) scores along with focused ec’s where you show leadership and have an outstanding essay, then I think you stand a good chance.

I was weight-listed, then denied as a sophomore transfer last year with the following stats:

3.84 College GPA while taking Honors classes
4.2 hs wt GPA taking the most rigorous curriculum
IB Dipolma
1220 SAT (M/V) 1800 total
29 ACT
Varsity BBall 3 years; co-captain for 2 years
Eagle Scout
Tons of community service volunteer hours
a lot of ec’s, mostly sports and scouting focused
pretty good essays
4 generations deep of UNC grads

This year I’m trying as a junior transfer with a 3.87 GPA through 3 full semesters in Honors College… I’ve stayed engaged with my ec’s and community service, so I’ve done all I can to get in… Oh yeh, I worked much harder on my essay this time around so that it reflected that I have strength of character, good citizenship, service and leadership qualities.

KJC-

Thanks for the prompt response!

I am surprised that you did not get in last year. Looking at the 2010 criteria for transfer sophomores that UNC lists, the median college GPA was 3.38 and the median SAT was 1230. It doesn’t list the average HS GPA but given the relatively reasonable SAT median, I’d be very surprised if it was any higher than your 4.2.

Anyway, good luck this year!

Yea I am REALLY surprised that KJC didn’t get in as a sophomore applicant…now I’m really scared! I didn’t have the highest grades in high school, they were just average. I definitely have above a 3.38 college GPA though and I think my essay was really good.

ahhhhhh decisions need to come out now!

The weak point was my essay… I wrote it straight not knowing that UNC was looking for it to be the vehicle to show I had certain characteristics they were looking for…

In retrospect, if I had it to do over again, I would have spent much more time writing and rewriting that essay…

This year, I put the time and effort into it.

How did you know that the essay was the weak point?

KJC where are you in school?

And do you want to PM our essays?

do you think we will definitely hear friday?

I sure hope so. Besides the possibility of being rejected, the fact that I have no idea where I will be next semester is very stress-inducing.
