Official UNC Transfer Thread Fall 2011

average is a relative term though…there is a math teacher at ucla who is known for having a median exam grade of 15%…doesn’t mean everyone fails.

Applying for Junior status OOS but attending NC Community College. Will have an AA degree from NC CC with 3.5 or so cumulative and EC’s and part time job. Any opinions as to chances?

^
I was waitlisted with similar stats and situation.

Anyone else have an opinion, Thanks.

Hello! I’m also going to try to transfer to UNC. I was rejected last year (I think this was mostly due to my abysmal essays and the fact that I really wasn’t able/ didn’t try to do much of anything in highschool - lots of video games) and am currently at NC State in the Honors Program with a 4.33 GPA as of now (this will change when I get my Honors Seminar grade, which will be an A). I will also be retaking the SAT in January just for the 'ell of it; I also wish to get into the UNC Honors programs, as I was delighted to see that sophomore transfers are eligible for acceptance. Good luck everyone!

Just to let everyone know, the honors seminars you have to take in the honors program at NC State are AWESOME, but the whole honors village “living and learning community” is not-so-awesome. There is some living involved, but not much learning. No debates regarding Greek philosophers or modern art break out; the honors village is just another grouping of dorms, with a little bit less drinking.

Note: Linux vs PC vs Mac and Linux vs “that Linux distro” debates are common.

Ubuntu is for n00bs, Fedora FTW!!! haha But seriously, your description of State’s honors community sounds remarkably similar to my honors program. I guess clustering students with high SAT’s doesn’t ensure learning will happen. If I was in charge of my college’s program, I would try to challenge the different floors in some manner. Perhaps being challenged would foster some creativity and community. Anyways, good luck with the transfer.

Hey Guys,
Since most of you have had some experience with transfer applications and chances, I was just wondering if you could give me a prediction on whether I will get into UNC.

I am applying for Sophomore transfer

My High School overall GPA was a 4.0 Weighted 3.2 Unweighted
However, my senior year GPA was a 3.66 unweighted and a 5.0 weighted

In terms of college, after taking 18 credit hours, I have a 3.95 GPA. (5 A’s 1 A-)
The 1 A- is from an honors writing class

Lots of extracurriculars in high school
4 Years Theatre
4 Years Track
Lots of clubs

And In college, I have done Club Ultimate Frisbee as well as a member of the Residence Hall Administration

I am in-state applying from UNC-A.

Thanks so much!

If you ever transfer to UNC, and mess up your hard drive or something and come to ITS to recover data, Ubuntu is what will save your butt.

Junior Status
AA Degree from NC CC
3.47 GPA
1270 SAT CR & M
EC (Sports)
EC (European trip with class)
Professor Recommendations
Job on Campus
Should have good essay

CThomp30: Hey, I’m planing to transfer to UNC as well. I’m currently at UNCA as well. Maybe we can meet up on-campus sometimes?

Applying Fall 2011 as a sophomore…GPA: 3.6, Sinclair CC(dayton,OH) out of state, ACT:very bad :frowning: taking SAT january 2011.

Also, I am having this problem with my records with UNC chapel Hill, I saw on the list that I don’t fall into permanent resident nor do I fall into US citizen(makes a lot of sense since I am a refugee status, doesn’t it?) and I found out they made the same to-do list for me online as if I was an international student(all TOEFLs, and bank statements, and sponsors and who knows what), so I was just wondering if there was a way to rectify my application since I already submitted it :(

Okay so i currently attend wake tech. it is one of the highest ranked community colleges. and every professor says that a 4.0 at wake tech is really strong. I currently have a 4.0 gpa with 18 credits, i am taking 14 right now but it has math 080. I am going to take pre calc over the summer and bio 112. I have not taken the SATS i will take them in january, do you guys think i have a high shot at getting into unc as a sophomore transfer. My highschool gpa was a 2.5. but i have a 4.0 in college so far. and full time is actually 12 credit hours.

and i am in the phi theta kappa honors society

Sophomore Transfer Applicant

HS:
3.3 Unweighted GPA
~1200 SAT ( Math and CR)
Took ALL IB/AP courses.
Multiple EC’s, including:
Volunteer work teaching children and women Martial Arts (I’ve been doing this since a young age)
Outside of school job ~4 days/16 hours a week. (More during the summer)
Played a couple different sports (local club leagues, not for the school)
Played numerous different instruments (Also from a young age)

College: (UNC Charlotte, specifically. Which is now considered a Tier 1 University)
3.4 (Fall semester only) GPA
Mostly challenging courses, spanning multiple disciplines.
Same EC’s. Continued my job and volunteer work.
21 hours of credit from Fall semester. Will have 33 hours completed after Spring.

I believe I have written two very strong essays. I have legitimate, specific reasons for my “less than stellar” performance in High School, and I addressed these reasons in my optional, supplemental essay. I had a friend who is an English major at Chapel Hill look over my essays and she gave her approval. I also included two letters of recommendation with my application: one from a community leader who is also my employer, and the other from my professor of the subject in which I wish to major.
When I visited the campus I made a point to make an appointment with an admissions counselor to discuss my application and what I could do to improve my chances. I did everything she said to do in regards to my essays and application.

I appreciate any legitimate input you might have. Thanks.

momo, the less college units you have, the more emphasis unc will put on your high school/sat/act stats. glad you’re turning it around, but i’m not sure you’ll have enough ‘proof’ of competency yet at the college level…

wildcat, as a sophomore with that gpa, i think you will need to present your case well, and you may suffer the same problem as momo with only one semester of grades to show so far.

i know i’ve already said it, but i applied with 72 units and a 3.5ish gpa, ECs, 1900 sat and was waitlisted. my HS gpa was 2.9 unweighted.

Biology major at Virginia Tech
High School; 3.8/1350 SAT/30 ACT
College: 3.95 Gpa
Thinking about transferring but after reading some of this I am not liking my chances!

3.39 GPA from a top 50 National University
3.47 including work from other institutions, specifically UNC
3.8 GPA at UNC summer school

I have been on Dean’s List twice now.

SAT
1360 (Math + Reading only)

I have ECs, but working on getting more before the March 1 deadline.

Chances, anyone?

Oh, and I am in-state, but I know it doesn’t matter.

has anyone actually applied yet?

historyman: You are a shoo-in!! A lot of people don’t know this, but if you complete two full years at any NC CC, you will be admitted automatically to ANY four-year UNC-system institution.

Plus, you have strong stats. Apply to UNC now if you haven’t already!

We plan to go this route with DS #2. He has some social-delay and shyness issues (also OCD!), and we don’t think he’ll be ready for a four-year institution at age 17. So, he’ll do two years first at Forsyth Tech and then transfer in to the UNC-system four-year college of his choice.

UNCA folks seeking to transfer: Why don’t you like UNCA? DS #1 has been admitted there, and it seems like it’s right up his alley (artsy/folky/mountain-y).

Please, please tell us your impressions about UNCA. Be brutally frank! This decision-making stuff is so hard.

Thansk!!
