Official UNC Transfer Thread Fall 2011

ok cool! 10 char

I’m thinking of applying as a sophomore transfer for the fall 2011 semester. I have heard that in applying as a freshman it is extremely difficult for out of state students to get accepted. Is it as difficult for out of state transfer students?

Also, if I get accepted I plan to major in Elementary Education and I was wondering if education students are able to double major.
Thanks for all the help!

Residency is not considered for transfer students.

HI there

I am currently enroll in another 4-yr public university in NC. planning to transfer as a junior and my stats are below

Essay : not so good on essay :frowning:
GPA:3.90
EC: joined 2 clubs, 1 as member 1 as committee
Credit taken: 70 (61 will be transferred).
Honors : 3 semester dean’s list, 2 semester chancellor list

I am actually thinking to drop a class cause i m pretty sure i might going to end up with a C if i dont drop it, but will a (W) withdrawal hurt my application?it is a history class 200-level, is a C better or a W better???

High School

went to a public high school since Jan 2008.
no ec
GPA :3.8
SAT: very low

however i am a immigrant which i transfer my country in asia to NC :frowning: so my gpa was very low after averaging it, which is like a 2.5.

I am really concern about my chances, is there any advice could be given or suggested??

thanks

Did you guys submit any teacher rec’s? and if so how…like did you do common app or a special unc one? i cant seem to find the forms. I know it isnt neccessary but I feel it would help?

Transfer,

I actually sent an email regarding transfer recommendations to the admission staff a few weeks ago.

They sent me the following response:

"Thank you for your interest in transferring to Carolina.

We do not require a letter of recommendation for transfer applicants, though you are welcome to submit one if you wish. We do not have a specific form for transfer students wishing to submit a letter, but your recommender may find the guidelines on our first-year recommendation form helpful. We prefer that your recommender clearly list your full name and date of birth on the letter so we may easily match it to your application. Letters may be mailed to our office or sent by email to uncsubmit@admissions.unc.edu.

Please let us know if we may assist you further."

I hope this answers your question,

Hi everyone! I am trying to transfer to UNC as a junior and crossing my fingers that I get in this time! I applied last year as a sophomore transfer, was wait-listed, then rejected.
Is anyone applying to the public health school?

BAH, how are you enjoying carolina? i kind of miss this shenanigans from last year haha!

I’m having a blast here. The southern accent and humidity took some getting used to, it’s definitely a different world than New Mexico. :stuck_out_tongue: I enjoy my classes, and I’m working in a research lab this semester for credit. I like it, and I like having a lot of opportunities for research as an undergrad, something my previous school lacked.

I definitely recommend unc.blinkness.com to check what your professors are like. It helps knowing what their expectations are ahead of time. From my experience the reviews are spot on.

Hopefully some of those who didn’t get in last year will this year. We should totally round up whoever we can and have a CC party. :P

Hey!

I am applying from the University of South Carolina as a sophomore transfer.
My GPA is 4.0/4.0 at USC.
My high school GPA is 3.9.
I have numerous extracurriculars such as being a page in the U.S. House of Representatives, club tennis, various clubs, etc.
My ACT score is 29 (composite), 30 (combined reading/writing).
I’m also an AP scholar (5 on AP Gov and AP Euro Hist, 4 on AP US Hist, and 3 on Econ). National Honor Society and other academic collegiate scholar organizations (NSCS).

Can anyone give me an idea of how likely my chances are of getting in?

Thanks so much!

Hey colatounc!
I am a current student at USC and I also applied last year as a sophomore transfer applicant. My stats were similar to yours (4.0 gpa and 4.0 weighted highschool gpa). Unfortunately, I was wait-listed and later rejected. I realized that for sophomore applicants, UNC focuses mainly on your high school resume. However, your high school stats look better than mine. Just make sure to write an awesome essay and you might just have a good shot. Best of luck!

Aaah thanks! Sounds scary, I hope I make it! What were your test scores if you do not mind me asking?

Don’t be worried. I think you will be fine!
ACT composite score: 28
SAT Math: 650
Reading: 630
Writing: 630

Can we fill out a mid term report for this spring semester and send it in? I know it’s not required, but I didn’t know if they would look at it. I’m getting all As that’s why I ask

Anyone sending in teacher or community member recommendation letters? They’re not required but everything helps, and I know that Carolina will look at them as well

Sending letters of rec can’t hurt so if you can get them, then send them in. That being said I don’t think they are going to carry significant weight in the admissions process. I get the impression that they’ll just put you over the top if your other stats are good.

Hey BAH. I don’t know if you check this thing often, but I remembered you saying that you applied with 3 C’s. What classes were those in if you don’t mind saying? Thanks a lot.

I got my psych teacher to write me an optional rec. B/C UNC does not have a transfer rec form, I gave him one from the common app. Do you guys think that is alright? I don’t want the admissions people to be like what is this kid thinking sending us something from the common app.

Yes I applied with 3 Cs, however two of those classes were from 2001, and they were business and animal biology, the business class didn’t transfer though. My recent C was in chem 101 spring '09, but as a psych/comp sci major, it wasn’t a big deal. That was also during my first semester back in college after traveling around for 7 years, which I think they understood that was an “adjustment” period. Plus my GPA that semester was a 3.0, however it went steadily up to 3.75 the fall before I applied. So my GPA when I applied was 3.46, mostly because of that first semester, but was considerably higher after.

I wouldn’t suggest having a bunch of recent Cs though. Mine were “excusable” simply because of age/circumstance.

Oh and as far as letters of rec, I didn’t send any. I took the approach that I was the best person to tell UNC about me, something that I reflected in my essays. It can’t hurt, but it also doesn’t really help either. Most of the transfer I met didn’t send one in.

Well it can hurt, they had someone send TEN letters of rec and because of that didn’t admit that person because they weren’t going to read through all of that. As long as you don’t pull that though, it can’t hurt. :P
