[ b]Subjective:**[ list]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parentheses): President of Science National Honors Society (founded it this year), Captain of Envirothon Team, Youth Group Officer and Worship Leader at church, Concertmaster of the county honors orchestra, 1st violin in various orchestras, piano for 11 years (various int’l, state, regional awards)
[] Job/Work Experience: A summer internship and a current internship at biomedical laboratories
[] Volunteer/Community service:
>800 Community Service hours (including my volunteer hours in the lab). Volunteer of the week (by a county arts/humanities council)
Writing (Write a brief description and Rate Quality on 1-10 Scale; 10 as Best):[ list]
[] Essays (Include Subjects):[ul]
[li] Common App Main: about piano and how I embarrassed myself at my first “real” piano competition freshman year[/li][] EC Short Answer: about my internship
[] Extended essay(which topic): Describe a non-scientific method. If anything, this was what got me in.
[] Optional Essay: didn’t do
[] Why Chicago: very generic…talked about the core and my interest in biomed research
[] Other:[/ul][ ] Teacher Recommendation #1: 7 (bio/genetics teacher - pretty solid rec, but nothing extraordinary)
[ ] Teacher Recommendation #2: 8 (swim coach/ government teacher - knew me since freshmen year)
[ ] Counselor Rec: 5 (had a baby and got back the week before EA was due, so I’m pretty sure she copied and pasted stuff…I didn’t know her too well)
[] Additional Rec: One from my Youth Group pastor (9), my piano teacher (9 - I read it), and my research mentor (9), these definitely showed the strongest side of me. I don’t think I would’ve gotten in on just my teacher recs.
[] Interview: 7 (didn’t get to talk much, but the guy turned out to be an Intel reviewer for my category…so that was interesting - we talked about research since he worked in the lab. He said he’d keep an eye out for my title as he read Intel papers…that was nice of him)
[] Art Supplement:
Other[ul]
[] Date Submitted App: the day of, at around 10 pm Eastern
[] State (if domestic applicant): MD
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: Public Magnet
[] Ethnicity: Asian
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket: not rich and not poor
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):[/ul] I’m pretty sure they don’t need any more asian guys there, so I don’t think I got in because of any “hooks”
Reflection[ list]
[] Strengths: The Uncommon essay made my application…I won’t disclose what I wrote about because I’ll use it to submit to a journal later on - It’s a pretty cool idea that combines two pretty unrelated fields…but I’ll leave it at that. I had solid grades/scores, decent recs, but so did a lot of people. If anything, it was the uncommon essay and my extra recs that got me in.
[] Weaknesses: Didn’t do many clubs at school, not much leadership positions until …senior year - when I decided to just start a club. (For future applicants, don’t think it’s too late - If you really like something and want to start a club…go for it! I really enjoyed research, and I founded a Science National Honors Society chapter in order to share my interests. Some people might say that it detracts from your app if it’s so late, but I think it’s never too late.)
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Once again…my essay
[] What would you have done differently?: tried to get more involved in school activities…because it really forces you to get organized and prioritize - I didn’t learn that until this year.

[ b]Other Factors:

General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc:
For future kids, spend time with your teachers and get to know them on a personal level. Also…get involved in school or anything that you’re passionate about (whether it’s music, sports, church, community service, …). It makes a difference in just the way you live. Even if you don’t get into your dream college, you’ll leave high school with a more fulfilling experience. Good luck!

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: I was unabashedly me in my application, quirks and obsessiveness and shoe-fanaticism and everything.
[] Weaknesses: My essays probably could have been better. I wrote the optional essay a few days before I submitted the application in what was probably a fit of pure desperation, but I don’t think it worked against me.
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: The interview, for one, went well, so that probably helped. My extended essay was kind of quirky, and my test scores were pretty darn decent.

[] Strengths: ehh not sure my extended essay and EC’s are really good for my area. ACT I suppose is alright. I had a huge upward trend. (3.0 Fresh to 4.67 Junior)
[] Weaknesses: Nothing stood out. Didn’t give it my all
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Nothing really special. Hopefully I get accepted RD, but I doubt it ;p
[] What would you have done differently?:[/ul]
Other Factors: Tried much harder and taken more standarized tests. I took them both right at the beginning of Junior Year.
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc: Eh, it was my number 1, but it hasn’t been the last month so not to disappointed. Good job to all who got in ! :D

[] Weaknesses: Bad essays, nothing really special about app
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I think my unique personality really shined through in my essays (jk). I think the academics and research got me in…
[] What would you have done differently?: Spent more time on essays[/ul]Other Factors:

General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc: Looks like quite a few CCers got in, congrats to them. For the deferred/rejected keep in mind that all of you were great applicants, who put a ton of effort in high school. The decision was completely out of your control, so don’t let it get you down- you’ll get in somewhere good. As for getting in, clearly essays aren’t everything (cause mine sucked and I think showed a lack of interest in Chicago).

[] Strengths: Well I had good test scores, I thought the interview went alright, I had gone to one of UChicago’s summer programs this past summer and had taken two classes there.
[] Weaknesses: About three hours before the deadline, I decided to scrap my entire “Between living and dreaming essay” and start over… might have done more harm than good. Low GPA.
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Probably for the items listed above, I would say that essay I submitted really didn’t show my true personality.
[] What would you have done differently?:[/ul]
Other Factors: Rewrote the essay sooner or just have stuck with my original essay.
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc:
Congrats to all those who were accepted! For everyone else, like myself, let’s wait and see what April brings…

I’m 0-2 on my 4 preferred schools right now… so I’m just hoping to get at least one acceptance.

I hope that CC people are just amazing that’s why we all got deferred… because it would suck if the deferred pool was too big. Suspiciously-odd lack of rejections.

deferred- 33ACT, 3.65ish uw gpa, decent ECs, amazing essays & recs, showed a lot of interest. i’ll post more detailed info once i get my final decision in the spring
