[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Writing! My essay was good, and I want to go into the field I have a passion for and have showed interest in.
[] Weaknesses: Everything Math :P, and Community service.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think it was the whole passion thing
[] What other schools have you been accepted to/plan on going? I’ve got accepted to UMich and McGill in Canada, and I’m still waiting for a few others!
[/ul]
General Comments: So so pleased! And with the aid thing, I was sure it was going to be a no!

@shanabanana922,

You think your grades are bad? Try applying with a B+ average and multiple Cs (and a couple of Ds) on your transcript   :D

But seriously, good luck! Like you, I’m delighted to find myself on the waitlist! Make sure to write a good letter of interest and hope for the best. It’s (almost) out of our hands now.

Congratulations to all accepted, good luck to those who have been waitlisted, and as for the rejected… Big deal! A college application can never capture the full scope of a your interests, the full depth of your emotions, and the audacity of your dreams. Your essays, however well written and heartfelt, give no insight into your personality–no single piece of paper can do that. Your extracurriculars, however impressive, are not what makes you unique; you are not the only ballerina in the world, or the only accomplished darts player. As for your scores and your grades, they are the one component of your application that has absolutely nothing to do with who you really are… What I’m trying to say is that you are not your application. Don’t take it personally, because the admissions officers are not passing judgment on you as a person. They couldn’t, even if they wanted to.

[/ul]

[] Weaknesses: UW GPA, Why Chicago Essay and not doing the optional.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Not showing enough interest
[] What other schools have you been accepted to/plan on going?
Accepted: U of Wisconsin, Purdue, Cal Poly, UCSC, UOP
Applied: Carleton, Amherst, Yale, Princeton, Dartmouth, Cornell, Duke, a couple UC’s
Rejected: Stanford EA
[/list]
General Comments:
I’m kicking myself in the crotch for not spending enough time on this application back in December. I never wrote the optional essay and my, “Why Chicago,” essay was marginal at best. I feel like I may have gotten in if I spent some time on those. Oh well, I was expecting a rejection, so a wait list, for me, will be taken positively. I hope I get in here, but it won’t be the end of the world if I do not. There are other schools, and they will all come out soon. Good luck to all on the wait list. Congratulations to all accepted. And, all the people rejected, do not feel bad. There will be a school that wants you, and an education is what you make of it. Warren Buffett, the second richest man alive, went to The University of Nebraska. I wish you all the best.

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2300 – 800 CR, 740 M, 760 W
[] ACT: 35 – 35 E, 36 R, 35 M, 35 S
[] SAT II: 790 Math II, 770 US History, 750 Literature

[] AP (place score in parenthesis): World History, Spanish Language, English Lang & Comp, Statistics – 5; US History – 4
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): none
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP Calc AB/BC, AP English IV (Lit & Comp), AP Comp Gov & Pol, AP Econ, online US government, AP biology, drumline, band
[li] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): One national essay contest
[/li]

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Music was my main extracurricular. Drumline and marching band for 4 years, captain my last year – about 35 hours a week. Our drumline has done really well at national competitions and is recognized as one of the best in the nation, and I did really well at a national solo competition too. I also compose – a film score I wrote won best soundtrack at ASU’s campus filmfest. And I play piano (solo, jazz band, accompanying), but I haven’t done comparatively well there – it’s more for myself. Besides music, I write for the Dallas Morning News, am in Scouts, am president of NHS, am in JWAC and competed in WorldQuest (got 3rd this year, 4th last year out of about 80 teams), and some other stuff that I can’t think of right now.
[] Job/Work Experience: none
[] Volunteer/Community service: Scouts, NHS – will graduate with 100 hours of service. probably the weakest part of my app.
[] Summer Activities: I went to Europe twice – once with friends and once on an expenses-paid trip from an essay contest. I went to a week-long marimba workshop and geeked out about the world cup. The rest of my summers were taken up by drumline and band practice.
[] Essays: If anything got me in, it was these. Common app was about Kerouac’s On the Road, studying jazz, and how both combined to create an important part of my worldview. My UChicago-specific one was really funny and I put a lot of my voice into it – I picked the “dissolve anything” prompt and wrote about how I want to dissolve the stoplight by my house that always stops me when I leave my house. And my short answer was about being in a successful drumline despite being deaf in one ear. My Why Chicago expressed a genuine interest in the school and was humorous, and I submitted the optional essay with a list of my favorite books, classical pieces, bands, and… key signatures. don’t judge.
[] Teacher Recommendation: Haven’t read either of them. One from AP English 3 teacher who I was really close to, one from AP Stats teacher who I was not as close to.
[] Counselor Rec: Pretty much just echoed my application. Only caught a glimpse of it though.
[] Additional Rec: None.
[li] Interview: Nein.
[/li]

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes! And got a whole lot more than I expected.
[] Intended Major: Uhhh I forget what I put. International relations, econ, or linguistics.
[] State (if domestic applicant): Tejas
[] School Type: Massive, ridiculously competitive public (34 NMSs this year)
[] Ethnicity: White and NA (but no tribal or cultural affiliation)
[] Gender: M
[] Income Bracket: 120-150k
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Absolutely none unless you count the Native American, but I really don’t think it had an influence because I’m also white and middle-class.

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Essays, definitely. My involvement in music is pretty extensive too.
[] Weaknesses: No massive awards, not a lot of community service.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think I’m the kind of person that UChicago looks for – the whole “quirky, brainy intellectual” thing - and I showed that in my essays.
[] What other schools have you been accepted to/plan on going? I’ve gotten into Fordham Lincoln Center and UT Austin’s Plan II, but I also applied to Columbia, Brown, Harvard and Princeton, and I’ve been deferred from Yale SCEA. March 30th come fasterrrrrrrrrrrr
[/ul]
General Comments: holy craaaaaaaaaaaaap! I was surprised to get in and even more surprised to get as much FA as I did… congrats to everyone else who got in too – I might be seeing you in April :D

[] Counselor Rec: didn’t see it. Know she likes me, but the woman’s kind of a horrible writer.

[li] Why you think you were accepted: I was deferred ED, so this was a HUGE shock! Chicago was definitely my reach school. Looking forward to meeting all my new classmates next fall!
[/li]

P.S. If you got waitlisted/rejected try to keep your chin up! I’m sure there is a school out there that will be great for you! Besides, our future success depends WAY more on how hard we each work, and the passion we have for our studies/careers, than on which school we go to!

[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none at all

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: SAT, GPA, Essays
[] Weaknesses: No awards, Rank, ECs aren’t amazing, could’ve taken a even harder courseload in freshman/soph year, Interview was meh
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Didn’t have the best ECs so didn’t stand out. Essays were solid but probably not mind-blowingly amazing.
[] What other schools have you been accepted to/plan on going? So far: Accepted with Regents Scholarships to UCLA, UCSD, UCSB; Denied from MIT (no worries I had no interest going there AT ALL)
[/ul]
General Comments: This is the first school I heard back from that I was actually really interested in going to (it is definitely one of my favorite schools, and I thought it would be a little more practical to get in to than Ivies). Interestingly enough, I am not feeling too bad now that I know I didn’t get in. I guess I take these rejections pretty well. I am unhappy that I was waitlisted though, because honestly I’d rather be rejected just for the closure, but I see that UChicago’s waitlisting is like a soft rejection – more people are waitlisted than rejected… so what’s the point of waitlisting…? Definitely Congratulations to everyone who got in! :D

Make sure your essays are very personal and different. Take the opinions of people chancing you with a grain of salt. Also, make sure you have some leadership positions withing your ECs and have at least one very interesting one. Mine was the teen talk show. Good luck!!

[] Summer Activities: CTY, Biomed camp, rowing camp
[] Essays: My CommonApp was about growing up traveling over Europe because of my parents’ jobs. It was well-written, if not very original. My UChicago Extended Essay was about Star Trek. It was unbelievably geeky and ridiculous. It was either gonna hit or miss.
