[] Summer Activities: Internship at a local office that provided shelter and services for battered women
[] Essays: Common app was interesting, it was a bit of an analysis of why makeup is so integral to my confidence. Why chicago was pretty straightforward, talking about the unique majors I was interested in. I asked a question for the additional essay, and did the extra essay on the history and makeup blogs I follow
[] Teacher Recommendation: excellent (I hope), my history teacher loved me.
[] Counselor Rec: from my leadership advisor (an AP), who I’ve been working with closely for the last 2 years and this year on the recycling program
[] Additional Rec: Cheer coach, pretty standard

[] Strengths: Unique in the cheerleading/makeup focus, definitely milked the love for history for all it was worth, expressed a genuine interest in learning and an intellectual campus in my essays, and a really really good interview

[] Counselor Rec: Our interview went well. We have a good relationship.
[] Additional Rec: I roped my algebra II trig teacher into doing this.
[li] Interview: I awkwardly perched on the interviewer’s couch and discussed Chicago’s core, school, and his career (psychiatrist). It went well as a first interview could be expected with the socially awkward applicant. I can’t exactly remember.
[/li]

Does anyone know what % was accepted/waitlisted/rejected? I’m really interested in knowing. Also when will the results come out for those waitlisted?

Decision: Waitlisted

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Strong interests, really liked my Find X essay, very challenging senior year and was a leader in FIRST Robotics which admissions officers likely know all about, freelance volunteer Japanese translating of a popular visual novel is borderline unique.

[/ul]
General Comments:
I’m honestly realizing that U Chic isn’t really what I’m looking for, the more I look at it compared to some of the other colleges I’m applying to - I’ve reaffirmed I’m for sure a premed guy, so premed at UC might not be optimal. I really liked the feel and atmosphere of UChic, so I wanted to give it a shot. But I’m not super disappointed about the waitlist. Feels good to not be rejected.

Accepted! Full Aid! I’ll post properly later; I’m using my phone right now.

Eh, I’ve been looking forward to filling one of these forms out since I joined the forums:

[] Essays: I’m very passionate about writing, so I really enjoyed writing my essays. My common app essay was about searching for creative inspiration. The Why Chicago essay was pretty straightforward, but not formulaic. I loved my optional essay; I analyzed Scheherazade by Richard Siken, who is one of my favorite poets. For the extended essay, I created my own prompt. I’m extremely proud of this essay.
[] Teacher Recommendation: Didn’t read, but I suppose they were incredible.

[] Strengths: Definitely my essays. Also, my extracurricular activities showed that I was passionate about certain academic areas, such as creative writing and public speaking.
[] Weaknesses: My math SAT score. I’ve always struggled with math, but I like to think I make up for it in other areas.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I emphasized my personality and originality through my essays. As well, I showcased my academic strengths and how I plan to develop them at UChicago.

[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I was deferred EA so I wasn’t expecting an acceptance, everyone else who applied from my school was deferred and now waitlisted, I can only assume we met the qualifications to attend but just didn’t stand out
[li] What other schools have you been accepted to/plan on going?[/li]Accepted to: Ohio State, Case, UMichigan, Wash U
Waiting on: Johns Hopkins, BC, Carnegie Mellon, Georgetown, Vanderbilt, Cornell
[/ul]
General Comments: Not surprised, still kind of thrilled and surprised about Wash U acceptance since I showed little interest. Didn’t lose any sleep over this result to be honest, UChicago wasn’t a top choice of mine. Congrats to all those accepted and good luck to everyone else.

[] Teacher Recommendation: Pretty sure they were good. Had both teachers for two years, so I knew them fairly well.
[] Counselor Rec: Also pretty good, I am guessing. But she has around 400 other kids, so I am not really sure.
[] Additional Rec: none
[li] Interview: Really good! She was really funny and down to earth. The interview was about like an hr and 30 minutes, and half the time we talked about Tiger Mom and the issue of cultural misunderstanding, etc. It was one of the better interview that I had.
[/li]

[/ul]
General Comments: In retrospect, the happy email really did make me feel like all the struggle was worth it! For the juniors looking at this thread, my best advice would be to START EARLY! I know you’ve probably heard this many times, but I can’t stress how important it is. By the time I began my winter break in early Dec, I had my Uchicago supp essay finished, so I was able to use that time to revise and edit them many times over.

[] Volunteer/Community service: Teaching youth theatre workshops since middle school… too many hours to count.
[] Summer Activities: See above, Europe trip, work
[] Essays: Pretty good, I thought. My find x was about how my friend and I spontaneously roadtrip to random places to get out of our town. I said that the journey was X. My common app was about how my messy room is a reflection of my mind. I don’t recall my favorite things essay, but my Why Chicago essay focused on the Law, Letters, and Society program, so it showed that I’d done a lot of research.
[] Teacher Recommendation: I waived my rights but got to read both anyway. The first, from my English/Film Literature teacher was pretty generic, but nice. The second, from my Civics/Free Enterprise/European History teacher was incredible… best rec I’ve ever read. She specifically mentioned what I had added to her class and papers I’d written… even my paper on the economics of legalized prostitution. =P
[] Counselor Rec: I didn’t get to read it. It was actually my from my Vice Principal who has acted as my counselor throughout high school since our counselors tend to focus more on kids who are having trouble graduating. This Vice Principal is so dedicated to her students and loves me, so I’m sure it was great.
[] Additional Rec: None

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Essays, senior courseload, GPA, ECs
[] Weaknesses: Didn’t take AP English, Thrown together App, Few APs, lack of major awards, quit some ECs/started several ECs senior year, no interview
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I got very lucky, and I think my essays may have a had a decent impact.
[] What other schools have you been accepted to/plan on going?: Waitlisted at WashU and Tulane (Won’t take a waitlist spot at either), Deferred from Brown ED, Harvard Academic Likely Letter, Accepted to Drexel and LSU (Safeties). I’m still waiting to hear back from Brown, Yale, and Vandy, but I think it will come down to Harvard and University of Chicago.
[/ul]
General Comments: This process is so random. As you can see above, I got waitlisted at two school I almost considered sure bets, but got a Harvard likely and accepted to UofChicago. So for those of you that ended up waitlisted or rejected, please realize it’s no reflection on you personally, and it doesn’t mean that you have no chance anywhere else. It’s all just part of the game. Personally, I’m ecstatic and so thankful for this acceptance. After such a rollercoaster of admissions results, I’m happy to be currently riding a high point. =)
