[] Volunteer/Community service: 200 hours at a wonderful children’s museum. i love kids =) they’re adorable.
[] Summer Activities: volunteering
[] Essays: common app essay was amazing…ly long. lol but i loved it. i talked about diversity and how it got me to choose what i wanted to do in life. find x was pretty beast i won’t lie. i loved it. it took me the longest to write and i had it proofread like 10 times. i took me months before i thought it was perfect. my why chicago essay was pretty average. the rest of the supplement was cool too. the part were they asked about what type of music i liked and all of that was one of my best. i completely lest loose. it was actually a lot of fun to write.
[] Teacher Recommendation: i’m sure they were great. i chose teachers who i love.
[] Counselor Rec: who knows. it could go either way with her. she seemed totally swamped last semester so i dont know if she did her best with each one. since if got in i supposed she made me look steller because my SATs were abysmal.

[] Strengths: super rigorous curriculum at a super competitive school, National Achievement, essays were amazing as well
[] Weaknesses: i hated my test scores. everything else was pretty solid though.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: My essays and the things I like section really helped me express me. I have kooky interest and a kooky personality and i made sure they knew that =D.
[] What other schools have you been accepted to/plan on going? Vanderbilt
[/ul]
General Comments:
Wow I’m amazed. There was a girl with much more stellar scores than me at my school who got rejected. Hopefully, they give good aid. I’m probably not going to attend though. They don’t have the major that I really really want to major in but from what I saw they are an amazing school and Chicago is a great city. They also seem to be skimpy when it comes to financial aid as attested to by others who got in EA at my school.

General Comments:
Long shot, but I’m glad I tried.

@lullinatalk: according to adgeek, columbia is compassionate enough to strictly never waitlist a deferred applicant. so we can both breathe a sigh of relief in that respect at least.

@ lullinatalk
haha yea it’s def a little annoying… i know i’m a little underqualified but just like, let me in or don’t. chicago just wants to leave me hanging i guess

Decision: Waitlisted

[] SAT I (breakdown): 2360 (760 Writing)
[] ACT: N/A
[] SAT II: 780 Math II, 770 US History, 660 Literature
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 91/100 with a healthy mix of B’s and C’s, but with an upward trend
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): If my school ranked, I would be outside the top quartile
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): 4, 4
[li] Senior Year Course Load: 4 APs and an elective
[/li]

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Classical Pianist (2 state championships, other state level awards), Community Service Club (Founder, President), Baseball (4 letters), Basketball (1 letter)
[] Job/Work Experience: Some piano gigs, but I forgot to put that on my app
[] Volunteer/Community service: Various. The most significant was organizing and performing a benefit concert for an African school.
[] Summer Activities: Harvard SSP (Didn’t put on app because I did horribly-I skipped over 50 % of my classes)
[] Essays: Standard. Essay Option 5: Have you had any results from an epiphany? My extended essay was my HYP essay combined with my Cornell essay, so… not exactly quirky
[] Teacher Recommendation: I had a bit of a trouble with these, seeing that most teachers perceive me to be the “laziest gifted person that I’ve ever seen,” but they turned out to be decent. One was surprisingly standard, and the other pleasantly surprised me. The teacher was a friend, actually-it implied that I was lazy, but that I had a lot of potential and passionate about things I like, and that I was personable and an indispensable part of the school community
[] Counselor Rec: Very good, actually.
[] Additional Rec:
[li] Interview: Great. Or I thought it was great…
[/li]

[] What other schools have you been accepted to/plan on going? Accepted: Wash U
Waiting on (in order of preference): Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Stanford, Dartmouth, Princeton, Brown, Penn, Duke, Johns Hopkins, Georgetown, Cornell, Vanderbilt [/ul]

General Comments: I’m thankful that I got in to Wash U since I haven’t exactly worked hard in high school… In a couple of classes, I did not do a single homework assignment. I did not deserve to get in so kudos to Uchicago for taking more deserving applicants.

Decision: Accepted

-I volunteered at two Tourette’s Syndrome Camp this past summer. I spent an entire week as a junior counselor at each one. I loved them both.
[] Summer Activities:
-The camp and internship
[] Essays:
-I didn’t like my CommonApp essay that much but found it pretty solid. It focused on something that my Tourette’s Syndrome but the essay was rather lengthy and could have been better.
-My Why Chicago? was pretty solid. I liked it.
-I took my book essay from my Brown app and used it for the optional essay. It came out really well.
-My extended essay was for two people prompt. I loved it so much.
[] Teacher Recommendation: Never saw them but both of them liked me pretty well.
[] Counselor Rec: Never saw this but I’m sure it was good.
[] Additional Rec: From the founder of one of my Tourette’s Camp. I feel like it really added a human aspect to my app.

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: My GPA and SAT score are really high up there. Also, I liked all of my essays which is a big plus.
[] Weaknesses: Another Male Asian applicant from California? No way! My EC’s list is not that deep at all.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: My essays were really solid and I fit the quirky atmosphere of Chicago really well.
[] What other schools have you been accepted to/plan on going?
Accepted: WashU, Vanderbilt, Emory, UCSD, UCLA
Rejected: Stanford EA (but I never really liked it there anyways)
Waiting: Tufts, Colgate, Columbia, Harvard, Yale, Cal, Brown, Dke
[/ul]
General Comments: The more I researched UofC the more I fell in love with it. It’s easily in my top five and I’m so excited to visit later in April. Good luck to everyone and can’t wait to meet those already in!!

Decision: Accepted

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2270 (750 W, 770 M, 750 CR)
[] ACT: didn’t take
[] SAT II (if submitted): 800 Math II, 740 Lit, 730 US History, 710 Physics
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 2
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): Chinese Lang (5), US History (5), English Lang (5), Physics C: Mechanics (4), Psychology (5), Human Geography (5), Calculus BC (5), Art History (4)
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): none
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP English Lit, AP Bio, AP Chem, AP US Govt, AP Macroecon, AP French
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National AP Scholar, Presidential Scholars Award, other less significant awards
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): FBLA (President), Science Olympiad (Captain), Academic Decathlon, NHS (Community Service Chair), French Honor Society (Secretary), Swim Team (2 years)
[] Job/Work Experience: Internship for a State Senator, School Tutor
[] Volunteer/Community service: Interact Club, volunteer tutor (not much)
[] Essays: Common App was cliche (not too profound, a bit unbelievable) but relatively well written. My main essay (two kinds of people) was a French critical analysis essay that I had written that had previously been translated into English for a summer program junior year, and with two lines added to both the beginning and end. You can tell how much I tried toward the end of my application process…
[] Teacher Recommendation: Only read one, which was okay. Assuming other one was okay as well. Gave them both brag sheets so they probably sounded similar.
[] Counselor Rec: Absolutely outstanding. Like, amazing.
[] Additional Rec: None.
[] Interview: Didn’t request–> no interview
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
[] Intended Major: Chemistry
[] State (if domestic applicant): CA
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: Asian
[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: 100-140k, with special circumstances (ie not this rich)
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.): None, other than maybe senatorial internship?
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Grades, AP Scores, SAT score, Courseload, ECs
[] Weaknesses: Lack of community service, generic/not-too-good essays
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Long essay must have worked in my favor.
[li] What other schools have you been accepted to/plan on going? UCLA, UCSD, Case Western, Cornell Likely[/li][/ul]General Comments: Everyone is going to hate me for this, but I really don’t know if I like UChi that much from what I’ve researched. It seems like “where fun goes to die” is true, and they study 24/7. And I’m not a huge writing/critical thinking type gal. But it’s given me the best financial aid out of all my schools so far, and it IS a good school. Plus, it’s reputation is probably an over-exaggeration. So I’ll probably go, and love it.

Decision: Accepted

Objective:[ul]

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): As is the case with so many people in this thread, too many to list properly. My favorites are MUN/MOAS experience, Amnesty International National Youth Group (Founder + President), National Youth Orchestra (Double Bassist), Student Government (Head Student).
[] Job/Work Experience: Internship with a lead strategist during El Salvador’s Presidential election campaign (2008)
[] Volunteer/Community service: Lots of stuff with Amnesty. We established a Feed the Poor program and distribute meals twice a month to different communities. I taught 3 kids to read at a local public school. We’ve raised some money for different causes w/ Amnesty. And a few other random things.
[] Summer Activities: Oxford Pre-IB Study Course at St Antony’s College Oxford (2009), Harvard SSP (2010)
[] Essays: My ‘Find x’ essay is the best essay I’ve ever written…about how Music and Econ/PoliSci are ultimately about the same things for me. For Common App, I wrote about my last ever christmas dinner with my closest group of friends.
[] Teacher Recommendation: From last year’s Physics teacher. I thought this was good. 9/10.
[] Counselor Rec: Pretty good. We’re not a big school, he’s my History teacher, and he’s known me for about 5 years. 8-9/10
[] Additional Rec: From my Math teacher. It could’ve gone either way. I guess it went well.

[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Nothing really stands out as a “hook”. You be the judge.
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Essays? Some of the awards?
[] Weaknesses: SAT scores are nothing special.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Not sure, but I’m glad I was.
[] What other schools have you been accepted to/plan on going? Admitted to Columbia (likely) and to NYU. Still waiting to hear from the others. In the UK, admitted to London School of Economics, Warwick, Durham, and York.
[/ul]
General Comments: For an Econ junkie who never got to take a proper Econ class in High School, thinking about majoring in Econ @ UChicago, of all places, is pretty amazing. I’m really grateful for this chance.

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Photo Editor for Pacemaker-winning 100 year old high school paper, senior theatre tech (and press photographer and press manager) for all three years of the life of an entirely student-run theatre company that does free outdoor theatre, Euphonium player for band and three years of school musical’s pit orchestra, hobbyist photographer as well as doing photography work (I do product photography and sports video for high school athletes)
[] Job/Work Experience: None really
[] Volunteer/Community service: Nothing regular enough to put down
[] Essays: My common app essay was very good, I worked on it for a couple months and got significant editing help. It was about journalism and photography. My chicago essay was a sarcastic essay about the idea of american exceptionalism. My short paragraph answers were very crafted and good too, if I may say so.
[] Teacher Recommendation: 3, one from my econ and euro teacher who loves me and said it was an excellent rec. Another from my physics teacher who really liked me (we’re both musicians and hit it off), plus I wanted to show a side of me that wasn’t social science related to show how I dealt with a class I wasn’t naturally good at. The last was by the journalism adviser who’s almost more like a friend. I pretty much rebuilt the photography department of my paper with his help (went from no staff photographers to winning awards in 2 years) and I’m pretty sure it’s a glowing recommendation.
[] Counselor Rec: Boilerplate. New counselor in my senior year so she doesn’t know me, although she seems friendly and I dropped in to say hi a few times. She oversees 500 students though, so every counselor rec at my school is boilerplate.
[] Interview: Missed the ridiculously early deadline.
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: I didn’t get a dime! This is a major problem with my going here. I’m middle class from San Francisco, so income numbers are high by most of the country’s standards and it looks like they didn’t take that into account at all. I’m going to try calling the aid office though and seeing if I can get something…
[] Intended Major: History/Political Science
[] State (if domestic applicant): CA
[] School Type: Large Public Magnet School (ranked top 30 in the nation)
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Male

[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.): Nada
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Scores, extracurriculars (especially journalism, photography business, and theatre company), public school?
[] Weaknesses: Volunteer/Work experience. It’s not uncommon for top students at my school to take ten to twelve APs (we’re accused of being an AP mill), so by that standard I’m not taking advantage of my curriculum opportunities. Hopefully they see that I’ve always tried to avoid taking APs just for the sake of taking them though…
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Probably my grades/scores and extracurriculars.
[/ul]General Comments: I’m pretty psyched. I also got into Northwestern, which I really like, but I’d be happy with either of my chicago schools. Still waiting on the Ivys and Georgetown, but I am a happy camper :)

It was essentially about my historical fascination with cemeteries. (I promise you, it wasn’t morbid at all!)
[] Teacher Recommendation: Didn’t see, but I’m sure they were both quite good.
[] Counselor Rec: Didn’t see, but I’m sure it was fantastic. My college counselor happened to be my AP English Language teacher, and I was her favorite student.

[] What other schools have you been accepted to/plan on going? Accepted to the UF Honors program, Middlebury, Denison, and Lafayette. Waitlisted at WUSTL and Northwestern (not surprising…my essay was terrible). Still waiting on Williams, Brown, Dartmouth, Georgetown, Johns Hopkins, and Tufts. UChicago is my current top choice, but it could be edged out by Williams or Brown. I’m very conflicted right now, haha.
