General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: I am beyond excited. I honestly have no idea how I got in, it must have been my essays/ extracurriculars. My SAT scores are so much lower than all the other accepted people. I had an interview, that may have helped.

pinkfire-

I haven't read your essay, so I can't judge. But blatantly stating why you need Chicago, or how you're different from your peers may not come off so well. Obviously, you're a strong applicant. That's why you weren't flat out rejected. I suggest writing something about a passion.

ie. I wrote about piano. I wrote about being in a piano class in my magnet middle school that had kids of all different levels, and having only been playing piano for two years, I was at a way more elementary level than the other students; however (and this is true) I realized that effort could substitute experience, and despite the taunts of some more advanced students, I managed to learn a piece they were learning--Rondo Alla Turca. It reshaped my life as a musician and as a person.

I know someone who focused her entire essay on another person; an elderly man she met at a retirement home who could not speak (he communicated by sliding block letters around on a tab). One day he asked her,"Do you love?" She asked him,"What do you mean? A parent, a boyfriend?" He said,"No. Do you love yourself?" And she described a process of self discovery through another person.

Again, essays do not have to be emotional or O.O There was one amazing essay I heard about thumbsucking. Seriously.

Ultimately, the essay needs to speak about you. Not about why you want to go to Chicago. They have a separate prompt for that, and obviously, if you're applying, you want to go (hopefully). Your essay doesn't need to say,"And that's why I want to go to Chicago," or "that's what Chicago will do for me," at the end. The college admissions officers will infer that from your writing.

How do you know what they will infer from your writing? When you're done writing your essay, have a teacher check it for grammar/punctuation mistakes. Have a friend or two read it to see if it really speaks about you. Then have a few people you hardly know read it and ask them what they think about you after reading it. If they're on target, great. If not, it's back to the drawing board.

I hope I helped. If you need anymore help, feel free to PM me.

Do they reject anyone this round?

Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): poet/literati in the making, lots of singing, exponentially improving grades
Strengths: i guess what i said above; i simply adore columbia for all it is
Weaknesses: junior year courseload and rocky freshman and sophomore years
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think that I showcase a great deal of growth, and my standing as an intellectual most likely helped. A bunch of kids from my school were accepted, and though I was towards the bottom of the heap--I think, at least--maybe I have some potential. I just adore the school and am always willing to work my hardest no matter what the outcome. I am so inexplicably excited!

wowww apologies apologies apologies i cut and pasted from columbia deferral and didn't take something out but you can replace it with Chicago because I adore it equally, seriously I actually started bawling when I was accepted; all I had been thinking about was my inevitable denial. im so excited!!!!!!!

I don't understand. I'm trying to, but I just don't.

are my stats that bad?! i got into georgetown with them. georgetown only admits 18 percent in early, what's chicago admittance rate?

Accepted! Ahhh

Accepted! I'm too wired to post stats right now because I'm waiting on a decision from MIT (26 minutes to go!!!) but I'll post them later. Congrats to all others accepted!!!

Note: Just because you get into one school early with certain stats doesn't mean you'll get into all of them.

Each school is looking for something different, something that stands out.

I've been so happy today because I got into the University of Chicago. In twenty minutes I find out my MIT decision. It's unlikely that I'll get into MIT with the same stats. And I won't be crushed. That's just how it is. We'll see how it rolls.

It's unlikely that any other schools will really value me the same way as well; I'm glad I found somewhere where I fit in.
