Hi,

So, I was one of the (it seems relatively few) UChicago EA rejects. This really crushed me, but it also destroyed my confidence on my chances of getting into Stanford, Duke, etc. I feel I was rejected not because I wrote badly, or about my high grades, but rather that I simply chose a bad topic for my common app essay. I wrote a very personal essay, and after being rejected I worry that it is a huge detractor. I wrote about my childhood abuse, my fathers suicide, and how I grew past them and they have made me who I am today. It is a well-written and moving essay, but now that I've been rejected I cant help but feel it was sharing too much. What would you guys recommend doing? Trashing my entire ComApp user profile and starting over or trying to work past it? Do you believe the essay can be overcome?

Thanks, I just really trust this groups insight.

kochampolska: just because one school rejected you, doesn't mean you won't get in somewhere great. Your essay sounds very good, so I wouldn't be so pessimistic. If you are really that worried about your chances, you should apply to another safety or two. Don't worry, I'm sure you'll do better than you think.

kochampolska: I don't think it was the topic which you presented, my essay was very personal as well. I don't know how you wrote your essay, but one tip for a more touching essay topic is to make sure you present it in a positive light, as hard as it may be. Try to show how you grew from the experience, so they know you're not dwelling on the past too much. Show you have hope for what the future will bring and that will inspire them as well.

oh my god, yeah, I thot UChicago's holistic..guess it's more about test scores then.
I mean, on majority, people who get in have like...22/2300+. Those who get in with below and like ridiculously low SAT scores are definitely helped by their URM status...omg so unfair
