[/ul]**General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: Honestly…. College counselors, family, friends, etc. thought I was a shoo-in. I’m a realist to the extent that some call me a pessimist…and even III thought I was going to get in. I was deferred from Duke. I was accepted to Notre Dame (which is more selective than UMich). I’m a strong applicant and I poured my heart into my application. If they don’t accept me, it’s their loss…but I’m not gonna lie. I’m really upset. UMich was in my top 3. I’m so confused by the decisions they made. Admissions can be really unpredictable. This absolutely encourages me to cast as wide of a net as I can with regular decision applications. It SUCKS to get deferred from two of your top 3 schools (Duke and UMich…I don’t hear from Northwestern until April). I feel **ty.

That GPA is probably what put you on the wait list. :-(

Pretty relieved after Stanford EA rejection. Hoping he can get into the honors program. At least 4 other kids from his school also got in. Usually most CA kids don’t apply to U-Mich because of the UCs, but there has been marked interest in U-Mich because of the problems that the UCs have been having. His sister was probably one of the first to break ranks and turn down UCs (UCLA) and went to Michigan.

^^^Wnderful stats! I would think he applied to other schools as well. Hear anything from them?

Thanks - He has targeted schools based on the quality of their physics programs. Eliminated MIT and Caltech (not his cup of tea) but is applying RD to the other usual suspects ( H,P,C + U-Chicago) plus the UCs. I think he has a realistic shot of getting into UC-Berkeley and U-Chicago - needs things to break his way at the other schools.

However he is really happy with Michigan - the physics department is pretty darned good (ranked 11th with Yale and Columbia) so he will have research opportunities there as an undergrad. He visited the dept. last year and was pleasantly surprised as to how open and accessible the profs. in the physics department were despite being a large school.

dadmm85…Congrats to your S!! Just curious, did he get the acceptance e-mail today or are you just posting his results today?

He got it last Friday - just posted today

@dadmm85 just wondering, what problems are the UC’s having?

That state of California has a huge budget mess on it’s hands - to the tune of $28B by last estimates. The UCs ( unlike U-Mich ) get a large fraction of their funding from the state. Until recently the instate tuition rates were as low as $6K per year. Only recently have there been increases in the seats for OOS. There are huge unfunded retirement programs as well plus the UCs have perhaps expanded (UC Merced is an example) unwisely. In many UCs the cutbacks are already affecting programs - sometimes kids don’t get critical classes etc. - there have been stories of kids taking 5 years to graduate. U-Mich went to a more stable financial model so that they are almost not dependent on the state for funding. My feeling is that this summer things will come to a boil over the CA state budget and there will be further cutbacks at the UCs …

Does this mean that UC’s will now be accepting a greater number of OOS students?

Yes that has already started happening. In 2007 UC Berkeley was roughly 12% ( 5% international + 7% US). In 2010, UCB was close to 23% OOS - I think they want to reach were U-Mich is (33%). Note that UCLA and San Diego have also had significant plans to increase the number. There is clearly a political problem - but for now they want more OOS to partially offset the budget crisis.
