***Official University of Michigan Class of 2015 Decisions Thread***

sAxsKy-If you look at any University ranking besides usnwr, Michigan is WAY higher. 15th in the world in QS World University rankings (the main world rankings), 15th in the world by Times Higher Education, 18th in the country by the Academic Ranking of World Universities. They are above Cornell in many of these. USNWR has them lower because of the ~50% acceptance rate, but it looks like that could hit the 30’s this time around so they should go up there too. It’s not that shocking (not that rankings matter very much but I assume that’s what you’re basing it on, correct me if I’m wrong).

@mnc1993:
I found out last Friday…I think when you get your decisions might depend on your region, not the decision itself.

Best of luck to all. Michigan probably got a TON of apps this year, the amount of people who applied from my school doubled compared to last year. Don’t be discouraged by deferrals, you can still get in and UMich will value everything you’ve done

Well, seeing as Michigan doesn’t reject at all I feel terrible. It’s time to give up on this school now I guess.

DEFERRED

I had posted this earlier, not in the mood to change it

General Information:

 • Senior, Class of 2011
 • Ethnicity: Indian, born and raised there for 8 years
 • Citizenship Status: I’m a Citizen of India living in the United States, so am an International Student in terms of what I will pay (50 grand) but am considered as an American student

General School Stuff:

 • Very good public school located in NY
 • GPA: 5.29 out of a 5.0 scale (weighted)
 • Rank: my school doesn’t do an official rank but I fall in the top 15% of 150 students
 • Rigor of Curriculum: took any and all AP / Honors courses my school offered (with the exception of band and chorus)
 • Senior Year Classes: Latin H (7th - 12th), Science Scholars H (9th - 12th - is an independent science research course), all the APs listed below

Testing:

 • SAT: 2230 (CR = 710, Math = 720, Writing = 800)
 • SAT II’s: Math II = 710, US History = 770
 • APs:AP Euro (5), AP Bio (4), AP Computer Science (4), AP American (5) — taking AP Calculus AB, AP Physics (maybe, might go to regular), AP English Lit, AP Macro, AP GoPo in my senior year

Activities:

 • Debate Team: 4 years, Co-Captain, Did 4-7 weeks for 3 summers of debate camp, 65 hours a week all year, State Semi-finalist, National Forensic League Distinction
 • School Newspaper: 4 years, Columnist for 2, 3 hours a week for 32 weeks
 • Ethics Club: 2 Years, Co-President and Co-Founder, 1 hour per week for 32 weeks
 • Summer Science Internship: spent a month in the summer after junior year doing stem cell research and developed a 20 page long paper on unique research (I intend to send it - my grades in science in school are a bit behind, so this can maybe recover?)
 • Piano: 3 years (actually, ever since I was 8), multiple national and state awards
 • School Choir: 4 years
 • School Band: trombone, 4 years
 • Curriculum Review Committee: 3 years, students in this work with the superintendent and principal to handle the school curriculum
 • Cross Country: 9th + 10th, got knee surgery so couldn’t continue
 • Tennis: 9th + 10th
 • Latin Club: 4 years, 1 hour a week for 10 weeks
 • Tutoring (paid job): just senior year

Community Service:
Worked in a hospital in India for 3 summers (not substantial, no more than 100 hours)

Awards:

 • National Latin Exam Summa Cum Laude in 9th, 11th, and (probably) 12th
 • National Merit Semi-Finalist
 • National Forensic League Distinction
 • AP Scholar with Honors
 • Multiple Debate Awards

I have solid recommendations, and I’m pretty sure my essay is solid.

Comments: I don’t even understand what is going on and I am so unbelievably amazed that I got deferred. Michigan was low on the list for me, and I don’t know — does anybody think this could be due to my immigration status, with the whole H4 visa confusion?? And if not, then WHAT IS IT?! Because I, along with my entire grade (not even kidding), is utterly confused.

To everyone getting deferred-

I got rejected from my first choice, at Wash U, I had attended wash U’s summer program, gotten good grades in the classes I took there and even had a rec from my professor at the summer program and I just got flat out rejected. (not even deferred) It felt terrible and I lost all respect for the school. A week later Umich accepts me. I also have a friend who got into Northwestern ED and denied from Notore Dame EA… so just goes to show how arbitrary this admin process is… personally im surprised there isn’t a surge in teen suicide around this time… its ridiculous what they do to us.

just take pride in knowing that you weren’t rejected…

Deferred from LSA. 34 ACT, 3.7 GPA, Legacy (grandparents, so I guess its not that big of a deal), lots of ECs (Eagle Scout, Band, etc).

Been accepted to Mizzou (University of Missouri) and UW-Madison.

Still waiting to hear from Duke, UNC, and Cornell (not excited to hear from them now…)

how many people still haven’t heard? it has to be a small minority by now, i would assume i would get deferred based on the amount of acceptances on friday but by now i just don’t know

“Comments: I don’t even understand what is going on and I am so unbelievably amazed that I got deferred. Michigan was low on the list for me, and I don’t know”

Maybe they figured that out…

Deferred from engineering.

SAT 2300, ACT 34, Math II 800, Physics 770, Bio 770, GPA 3.1 - 3.2 (school doesn’t give extra for honor or AP, but this is really my weak point). Competitative private school at east cost. No rank.

Well, I think I will just give up UMich and put my hope on other schools.

@eziamm I don’t want to argument over school rankings, but Ivy League schools are generally more academically strong overall. Michigan is known for its programs, like engineering, etc.

I got deferred today too… with a 3.94 GPA and 1780 (lol) SAT score. I do believe I got better scores from the December test and plan on sending those to UM. Anyways, I’m not too upset about it because I got into a school that was higher up on my list today too. Anyways, good luck to everyone. The process is tough!

Seriously ***ing at the deferal

If you are paying OOS fees or coming form far away to go to Michigan, I feel it would make sense to do it for Engr and Business and some degrees in LSA.

My dad called the admissions office awhile and here’s what someone on the board of admissions told him:

They accepted less EA applicants this year than they have in previous years. They DID (or WILL) send out rejections as well as deferrals in the EA round. The people accepted in EA were, in their eyes, the top 10% to 15% of the EA applicant pool. The majority of the freshman class spots have not been filled by EA applicants. So deferral, while not an acceptance, is not a set in stone rejection.

I don’t know how truthful that all is, as based on others posts’ it seems different people from admissions say different things. That’s what we’ve heard though.

I don’t know what’s going on either. I was accepted, however, my very close friend did not get in, and she has better ECs, better GPA, same course rigor, and most likely (never asked) better test scores. Also, she has volunteered abroad several times.

Good luck to all of you, and if you got deferred, please don’t give up!!!

My stats (basically):
ACT:29
IB full diploma
GPA (UW/W) 3.64/4.6
Several ECs, volunteering, piano, two leadership positions, 3 clubs.
Great essays

This makes me think that perhaps they’re putting less emphasis on grades? Although…that’s really odd, for MI to do.

does anyone know how many people applied EA? i heard 17,000 but i also heard 22,000… anyone have an accurate #?

^I think it was over 20k. I also bet a large emphasis was put on that why Michigan essay. They wanted a low acceptance rate and a high yield so in ea they only took qualified people that really want to go there (or so I think).

sorry to all the deferrals; you need to know something VERY crucial though; being deferred to UMich has NO relevance to your other applications; over the years, as you have seen here, there have been many people deferred who end up at schools that are considered equal to or even better than Umich for whatever reason…

back in 2008 my daughter was deferred on Dec 23rd to Umich; we thought it was the kiss of death (and actually thought there was something wrong with her applications)…she went on to be accepted to Vanderbilt and similar schools in RD with MUCH lower acceptance rates…

she ended up withdrawing her application from the deferral pool in January (which actually didn’t work) and was waitlisted anyway in April…and her stats were very similar to alot of the deferrals on this board (and higher than quite a few of the acceptances)…

hang in there; it’s not the only school on the planet
