-volunteer at a summer camp for kids with special needs for 2 weeks during the summer
[] Summer Activities:
-CTY during summer between 9th-10th grade
-volunteer work (above)
-internship (above)
[] Essays:
-Common App–really not sure about it, used the one about transitioning into adulthood and wrote about a severe phobia I have which can be a sensitive subject if not handled correctly, I’m thinking of changing it for the RD round
-UMICH–the Why UMICH? essay talked about a visit to the campus and what the school of engineering would allow me to participate in; for the community essay I wrote about my lab experience and how I became a part of the scientific community when I experienced the failure of an experiment I had been planning out tirelessly and how this only made me want to try again with modifications and do more research, etc.
[] Teacher Recommendation: one from math teacher which was pretty generic, one from chem teacher which I didn’t read
[] Counselor Rec: should be pretty good, I think she likes me but at my school we don’t really talk to counselors (unless we’re trouble makers or failing classes, etc.) so not sure how personal it is
[] Additional Rec: didn’t send the one from my mentor/professor because of common app issues, oh well guess I didn’t need it…
[] Interview: I did the HAIL interview program which is a pilot alumni interview program in the Chicago-land, NYC, and San Francisco areas and suburbs. It went pretty well, my interviewer was a pretty recent grad (5 years maybe, around 2008 I believe?) and knew a lot about the university! Not sure how much impact this had, little if any, and it was more informational for me than a probing of my character and interpersonal skills. I enjoyed it and it gave me some interview practice and my interviewer probably put in a good word for me. Definitely do one if offered the chance!!!

[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I feel like high standardized test scores are important at big state schools and my Why UMich? essay was tailored very specifically to the school
