When is Ross preferred decisions coming out?

I meant to post this on the 20th when I got in but my power went out…

EA- Accepted, LSA
In State
GPA W- 4.2
UMich GPA- 4.0
ACT- 29 (32/28/32/33)
Top 10%
Very good ECs (DECA President and Founder/Lacrosse Captain/ Football State Champ/ Michigan Boy’s State Delegate)
Essays were pretty good as were recs

I also have a friend who got in to LSA with a 3.7 UMich GPA and a 27 on his ACT but his ECs were almost as good as mine. Another friend got in with a 26 to LSA with a 3.9 UMich GPA.

Summary for first 115 entries average acceptance scores:

In state CoE (n=6):
SAT: 2065 (sample size too small)
ACT: 33.1667
GPA: 3.87317

OOS CoE (n=23):
SAT: 2236.67
ACT: 34.4615
GPA: 3.92343

In state LSA (n=31):
SAT: 2141.43
ACT: 31.129
GPA: 3.90494

OOS LSA (n=41):
SAT: 2180.77
ACT: 33.1538
GPA: 3.89554

*Note: not everyone provide both SAT and ACT scores. Deferral and non CoE/LSA records were entered but not included in the summary. I accidentally included 2 non-LSA stat in the oos LSA in the previous summary. The error is corrected here. Stat for one VESTA14 reported in the other EA result thread is included.

Billcsho, you have way too much time on your hands :P

Seriously though, thanks for taking the time and effort to do that. Provides a good summary of what to expect. However, the people who are posting here are probably the ones on the higher end of the test score range (that’s who most people on CC are anyway so that’s something to keep in mind).

Same as parchment, people who reported back or even pay attention to these forums are usually higher performers. At least, we get some idea on the relative competitiveness of LSA vs CoE, and in-state vs oos.

We might also note that this is not necessarily representative haha.

There were not many (if any) rejections, so we cannot be entirely sure. Also, the people who use college confidential aren’t exactly a “random” sample, so for those still waiting underneath these averages, it isn’t necessarily an indicator of doom.

Reflection
Strengths: fantastic essays, solid CR and W on SAT, teacher recs
Weaknesses: Lowish GPA due to 9th grade slacking, SAT math section
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I honestly don’t know and am looking for some insight into this. A girl in my grade going into LSA with a significantly lower SAT score than me got in. Pretty annoyed. Maybe my GPA was too low
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: accepted to IU, UVM, Tulane, UMass Amherst, SUNY Albany, and University of Wisconsin at Madison (will probably attend)

General Comments: I’m quite frustrated and annoyed that I got deferred. If anyone has any insight into why that happened I’d love to hear. My CSS profile wasn’t fully completed when I submitted bc my non-custodial guardian never finished it, so I’m wondering if that could have contributed. Or my somewhat late date of submission. Very upsetting

ersnyc. Not sure why you are so “frustrated and annoyed.” You were deferred and not rejected. Did you honestly think Michigan was a safety for you?

ersnyc, it’s understandable why you got deferred. Your SAT and GPA are too low for OSS applying EA. UofM places a lot of weight on GPA and a 3.5/3.6 is just not cutting it. And you don’t really have any stellar EC’s to make up for it either. Don’t be annoyed about it, you’ve gotten into a few decent schools. Just finish off the semester well and hope for the best.

I certainly didn’t think it was a safety, I thought it was a low reach. I think anyone who gets deferred from their dream school is allowed to be upset and frustrated. In terms of GPA and SAT scores, 2080 is well into the avg accepted student for Michigan, which is according to them a 2030, and according to Naviance a 1990 (obviously that’s too low), and at my school a 3.5/3.6 GPA, or a 90 bc we don’t go out of the 4 point scale, is very high.

Quite a few people with lower stats, ECs, etc have posted on here as being admitted, so I was just curious about my own. Even one of the people at my school who got in had lesser stats than myself.

I’m frustrated because of all the hard work one does to get their stuff in early, only to be deferred to RD. And also, Michigan doesn’t really reject in EA so I can’t be too thankful for that.

ersnyc,

To add some detail to what Miw140 said:
- Your GPA would place you in the bottom quartile of Michigan’s entering class.
- Your SAT M would also place you in the bottom quartile of Michigan’s entering class.
- Your SAT CR is stronger, but not stellar by Michigan standards; it would place you in their second quartile.
- Your SAT W is very strong, but many schools still don’t count W at all and others don’t weigh it as heavily as M and CR. I don’t know Michigan’s policy on this, but I think you need to assume that a strong SAT W score isn’t likely to carry the day over a weaker GPA and SAT M.
- Michigan places the greatest weight on HS GPA and curricular rigor. Hard to say how your curricular rigor stacks up without knowing the specific context of your HS, but for an OOS applicant with your GPA, the rest of the application would need to be extremely strong to give you a good shot at being admitted EA, especially in a year when Michigan has received a record number of EA applications and is likely to end up with something like 40,000 OOS applications overall.
- Bottom line, Michigan should have been considered a reach to a high reach for you. Under the circumstances, there’s little reason to feel “frustrated and annoyed” that you weren’t admitted EA, even if a few other people were admitted with similar or slightly weaker stats. It is, after all, a holistic admissions process, which means it’s not purely numbers-driven. And the fact that it’s holistic will probably help you more than it hurts you in the RD round, especially if your essays and recs are as strong as you say.
